Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Will Jim Ferry finally start doing what his title says and 'Coach'? Early in the season he was more receptive to using more of his bench. And with great success. Not only were they winning but the team was upbeat, confident and functioning as a strong cohesive unit. A large part of 'coaching' has to do with getting the most out each player. The Dukes have more than enough talent to hold leads against any team provided the right combinations are on the floor at the right time. The season is not lost provided 'coaching' strategies change. Use your bench!

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

After Fordham's sweep of UMASS they are now 1 game behind Dukes while Bonnies win over Dayton separates them just 1 game behind Flyers.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Well Jimmy, year 4 with 2 seniors at guard and 2 juniors up front, what is your excuse now???? One has to wonder how with GA's leaving you get an extra year, very interesting....... Anyway, when you blow the games you should have won this is where you are.  Inexcusable loses starting with Dayton, blowing leads with seniors and juniors is inexcusable in these last several games and that is why you are in a pinch.  Tonight was a good game, but you already (profanity) the bed over the last 4 games.  Please spare us the "this is a program learning curve".  We are not stupid Jimmy, enjoy your $$$ while you are getting it.

Caught the score over ESPN game tracker, a 77-74 loss , my 16 win projection still in doubt, Mason had 23' I will wait for the board members who viewed the game to report.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

People need to understand that Ferry's team and the Cleveland Browns are just in a rebuilding phase.  Next year everything will be fine...it will only be year 5.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Robinson: 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist in 2 minutes
Sanders: 2 points, 1 offensive rebound in 4 minutes
Jackson: 3 points, 1 steal in 4 minutes
How can you look at these numbers and  not wonder why they are not utilized more? Especially Robinson who is very consistent but very seldom used. Do not forget that these players are coming off the bench cold but still find a way to  contribute. The Dukes have all the tools necessary  to succeed. Unfortunately they are in the hands of an apprentice.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Robinson was really a puzzle.  He came in late in the first half, immediately made an impact and then disappeared for the rest of the game.  How did he go from being Ferry's 'true 5' at the start of last year to this?  He was a little rough last year, picking up early fouls.  But, how is he ever going to improve if he doesn't get more game time.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Inside Out & Indygjm,

Sad but True -  There are only FOUR Players in the Program Ferry REALLY trusts (Mason, Colter, Jones (wonder if he would be playing 37 minutes per game if he hadn't gotten injured) and Lewis (his playing time is pretty much determined by his stamina and foul situation)

Three of these will be departing at the end of the year.

The remaining players see various amounts of time - solely because the rules state that there are to be five players on the court at all times.

IF at any time next year Ferry lament's the team's "lack of experience"  - Perhaps one of the Media Members will raise his hand and say "WHY?"

With the A-10 Tourney at the Cosol Center Next Year - If Dayton (who seems to have a fairly solid group of fans that travel with the team) does NOT make the Final -  Perhaps they will need to bring in the WWE and some of the characters from Monday Night RAW to perform at half time and during the media time outs to insure there are a decent number of people in the building.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

PistolPete: I share your frustration with the status of the program. However, I think it is demeaning to call Coach Ferry "Jimmy" as you did. He is a good man who is trying his best and he deserves our respect.

Hard to fathom, Dukes now tied with St Louis!

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Coach Ferry now calling for "others than" Mason and Colter to start making plays during the "junk defenses" Dukes are seeing.  Question to the coach:  Other than your run & gun offense what else is there in your playbook?  Coach, seems to me you now have no other ball handlers on the team other than Mason and Coulter predominantly as result of the unceremonious dispatches of Binney, White, Stevens and Ridenour. Other than your 2 starting guards who else can handle the ball up court without risking turnover?

With you, losses are about team failure and not about your coaching.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

During the brief moment Robinson was on the court ( less than 2 minutes) one announcer commented that he is a 'true post player'. Then, as quickly as he arrived, Robinson was gone. Never to be heard from the rest of the game. How can the announcer quickly figure out the quality of play Robinson brings to his team but coach Ferry cannot? You are right to say that coach Ferry only trusts his starters. I would consider this to be an insult to his bench players. I just hope that his trusted players do not burn out. I believe it is already starting. Hopefully I am wrong.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

I 100% agree with 'insideout" Jim Ferry start doing what your title says.....COACH. I dont understand why you dont want a winning team when you have guys on the bench that has the potential to give you lots of wins! Think smart FERRY. Yesterday when you put in Jordan Robinson for a very short amount of time...very short (2 minutes) look at the stuff he produced. 2 pts, 1 rebound  and 1 assist.  Then you have your same 5 guys you play for every SINGLE game that plays tons of mins and producing 7 points and whatnot, some aren't even putting up points or anything. Colter plays very hard and is great at what he does, but you can clearly see that he needs a rest but NO break for them. When Darius Lewis comes out how about playing J-Rob hes a big who can defend great and help on the court. Now I am not a coach but as a fan looking on from the outside I am smart enough to see that if Robinson was given half of the playing time that you give your 5 favorite starters he can make some magic on the court. Just saying. A little food for thought Ferry.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

ok, so I'll just ask this of "Coach" Ferry, explain to those of us who have been watching bball for decades your rotation?????  I too was shaking my head when JR came in, promptly posted his guy up and scored, got a rebound and on the next offensive possession gets the ball in the post again and I guess they collapsed on him as JD said he made a real good pass out to an open DC who then hit a 3.  After that back to the pine young man!!  This is ridiculous, I just don't get it and I am on board with what many posters have said about not playing guys who appear to have talent, just not enough experience and they certainly aren't getting it playing 1 minutes, if that, per game.  As CLK says, "no more excuses"!!  Maybe JF is already preparing next year's post game with, "well we lost our 2 leading scorers and starting guards, how do you expect us to win".  Well Coach you are now on a 5 game losing streak in your "breakout" season with the experienced line up you yearned for and constantly reminded us of during your first 3 rebuilding years!!  I can remember the quotes, and I'm paraphrasing, "we need guys who know to do things our way".  Well all I can say is nice results.  Sorry guys, just totally frustrated.....yet again.  A season of promise down the drain with 6 in row coming up at St. B.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

All of you have logical points.  My concern is now, it appears we could be worse next year in Year 5.  I am sure Ferry is a nice guy, and I am not trying to be mean...honest...but I think he is in a league that is out of his league.  What he did with LIU is not going to work here...it hasn't worked here.  What the heck is the AD going to do??  Next year, he won't be able to do anything because DU can't afford to buy him out.   I am wondering what the buyout actually is...and since the lame duck President extended his contract I am speculating that he gave Ferry whatever amount of buyout he wanted to he gave more years to a coach that has not yet had a winning record.  So Wednesday, they are going to St. Bonnies... a team that just beat Dayton at Dayton, and a team that lost to us here.  Things aren't going to get any better...and the fact is, I didn't want to say any easier.  We can't depend on playing easy teams like Ferry did at the beginning of the year to make it look like we have a winning record.  As someone else posted, think back to how we were lucky to beat St. Frances and Robert Morris.  Hopefully we will still have a "winning" record.  And if we do, it will be because we played so many cupcakes - OOC schedule which has come back to hurt the team.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

According to ESPN the Bonnies are on the Bubble. Last 4 in. How about that. I propose we move the Dukes to Poughkeepsie New York where we can vie for the same talent as the Bonnies. Seriously though, here are two teams that MAY end up with Number 1 seeds in the Dance. Quote from USA Today Sports - "Villanova has five players averaging double figures, while Xavier has six players averaging 9.4 points a game or better". THAT, folks, is how you win.....

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

St. Bonaventure ( commonly referred to as " Bona" by locals ) is in Olean a small NY/Pa border town about an hours drive from Buffalo. I used to catch games at Reilly Center when I was working in the north central Pennsylvania area as a sales rep. The fan base then was students and local alumni as well as folks from area. The atmosphere was great, and they never fell into the deep funk that has overtaken Duquesne. City kids go there because they want to play and win. It is a small school but seems to understand that basketball is a plus for the University.

It may be a hard night for our lads Wednesday.

Back in the day there existed a rivalry as Wildcats and Dukes would compete both home and away.  Long ago and far away!

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Dukes were better some years and vise versa, Villanova left Eastern Eight for Dave Gavits Big East, he took Pitt over Duquesne also, the end of promenance began although the slippage began in 1971-72' when three top recruits left and Mikey Davis went to ABA.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

Stick a fork in this team and program. They're cooked under Ferry. They won't win another game and finish below .500. In an odd sort of way, I'm looking forward to it. Losers

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

I feel for the players. Especially the Seniors. They have worked hard and given their all to their team. I know these men do not like losing. You can see it in their faces. They are fierce competitors. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about the coaching staff. They have let their players down.

Re: Rhode Island road game tonight! Win or loss?

while no one likes to be on a losing streak, this loss didn't bother me as much.
RI is a tough place to play and despite the roller coaster of a season they are having, is still a talented and well coached team(even if their coach is a nut job)- with EC Matthews, they are likely at the top of the a10 and ranked.

what i liked most about the dukes this game is the effort. after losing 4 games, it would have been very easy for these kids to pack it in early when the got down by 8-10, but they fought back. almost won. thought they played very hard and never gave up.
four tough games to go. winning in olean is never easy, richmond always gives the dukes fits, fordham is a mystery, and st joes is pretty darn good. despite the dukes lack of coaching, i could see these kids willing themselves to win 2 of the last 4. i may have given up on the staff, but def not giving up on these kids. they def showed they are fighters!
