Don't know about the "great coach even better person part"  My senior year he reportedly told the team -- if they did so much in fund raising - they could have a game in Florida at the end of the year --  Players busted their A$$es to raise the funds --  right before the end McCann reportedly told them something along the lines of "Your Fund Raisers are Conflicting with the School Fund Raising"  stopped the process. NO trip to Florida.

Jack McVay who won the Democratic Primary for Judge last week was on the team -- still goes to some of the games --  maybe Jack can enlighten some of us what really went on -- but several of the players I hung out with Disliked him BEFORE that --  and their attitude took a turn for the worse AFTER IT.

Al, I did not play football (had to get a job to pay for my tuition) but I would have played for the man if I would've had the opportunity. I know a lot of players who held him in high esteem. Back in those days the program was of course a club. Wouldn't know unless we asked him the question, but it's possible someone in the administration pulled rank on him.

Dan McCann is the answer to the question: Who is the last Duquesne coach to win a national championship?

Re: Duquesne Athletic Fund to Roast and Toast Legendary Coach

When they beat Mattatuck for the National Championship -  Mattatuck had a BIGGER Offensive Line than the Steelers (who were somewhat smallish on the OL with players like Clack, Mullins etc.)  TODAY if an Offensive Lineman is 6'5  320 they probably call him "Pee Wee"  or "Tiny"  Still would like to know if there was anything more to the incident I mentioned - since I graduated in 1978 would have been the Fall of 1977 -- Proposed opponent (if I remember correctly was St. Leo)  I did not play football but did hang around with several players who did and were in the School of Business Administration with me.

The Big Guy is a character to say the least.  I've known him for many years and indeed he can rub some people the wrong way.  I even attended a Grateful Dead show with him in '95.  His first, my last.  He and Rose were not your typical Deadheads.

Hey Al if you graduated in '78, our paths likely crossed at some time. I graduated in '80.

Re: Duquesne Athletic Fund to Roast and Toast Legendary Coach

While Dan McCann was a class act, I'll pass on this buffet dinner. I'm not about to fork over $135 so some pampered jocks can stay at better hotels and eat steak and lobster.

The Dan McCann Fund for Excellence will honor the legendary coach while helping the Dukes maintain their tradition. The McCann Fund will support improved travel arrangements and accommodations for the teams, state of the art equipment and coaching tools, recruiting on a national scale, and other necessities for the team to not just compete, but to excel on the field and in class. The resources provided by the Fund will make the difference between good and great for years to come.

The pretense that you in anyway, shape or form care about DU athletics was never in doubt in my mind.   But this seals the deal.

Yes, I am sure that this fundraiser is so that football players get steak and lobster.   It will also pay for  in room porn on the rare occasion the football team travels over night.

I have attended fund raisers in the past.  I will not be attending this fund raiser.   But to slam the intent of this fundraiser shows that you are just a troll.
