If you are not familiar with BYU, here's a deep highlight of their first round win in the Big 12 Tournament over UCF.  This is a really good team the Dukes are tasked in beating.

I would not mind that task, CLK.  Let's start small and look at doing one more.  Go Dukes!

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

I'm a bit paranoid, but where is the BYU game on TV.  Don't trust the DU site for that info, and KDKA said something like True TV.  What the hell is that? I hate that you have to chase these games all over the channels, makes it hard for cheap un-tech savvy guys like me.

From USA Today (last year’s info, but I believe it’s still accurate).

What channel is truTV?

TruTV can be found on several cable providers, and has the same channel number nationwide on some of the providers. Here are the channels:

AT&T U-Verse: 164/1164
FIOS: 183/683
Cox: Varies by location
DISH: 242
DirecTV: 246
Spectrum: Varies by location
Xfinity: Varies by location
For streaming, truTV is also available on: YouTube TV, iOS App Store, Google Play, Amazon App Store, Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Roku and Android TV

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

I saw this note about BYU:

BYU is 18-3 when they make ≥10 threes, and 5-7 when they don't make 10 threes

Duquesne has only allowed teams to make 10 or more threes ONCE all season, and that was in November

I feel good about this match up given how well we defend. Go Dukes 🏀

Good stuff, CLK.  BYU is a big team; 60% of the time, their smallest player on the floor is 6'4" (others being 6'5", 6'5", 6'7" and 6'11").  Yet they are 2nd in the country in their 3 point rate - 50.7% of their shots come from 3.  They don't get to the line very often, so I'm hoping that the Dukes will be able to stay out of foul trouble.

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

I can't decide if I like or hate this opponent for the Dukes. Probably I am just nervous.

Their 5-out offense will probably limit Dusan's ability to stay on the court for defensive reasons. I expect to see lots of Drame, Necas,Hronsky, & maybe even some Savrasov in order to keep up with the constant perimeter switching.

One positive for Dusan is that he should be able to make hay on the offensive end as their primary big is only 6'6". It seems like there is also an opportunity for spot minutes for Savrasov to also help on offense.

Their guards are big & shoot well. This may limit Kareem's minutes. Jimmy can't be taking chances going under screens & sagging too far into the lane.

The Dukes showed very little zone over 4 games in Brooklyn. Perhaps throwing that at BYU in short bursts could surprise them a bit.

Dixon is due for a monster performance!

When looking for rooms near the arena I noticed that there is a very large Mormon tabernacle a few blocks away from the arena. I wonder if Omaha Mormons will turn out as a result?

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

Strange gym, odd crowd, we might have some support from the people of Omaha, who knows.   BYU could have a cold day shooting, it happens in the big dance, they have the pressure on them.   I agree Dixon, Necas, Drame will need to bring their lunchbox and be ready to put out all effort.   And I think they will.

But we need to score, 60 pts wont win this one.   Need to really take care of the ball on offense, no sloppy TOs.

Bottom line is I'd love any matchup we got because it means we're dancing again. This is a team that should not be  a 6 seed though. Looking at their resume they could have been a 5 or maybe even a 4 seed. Then again most of the analytics said we were going to be a 13 seed. So this could have been a 4 / 13 matchup instead.

Great note from CLK about them living by the 3 and dying by it. Our perimeter D has been steadily getting better over the course of the year to the point that we're one of the best in the country. I'll add on to CLK and note they are 3-8 this year when scoring less than 75 points. Only 6 teams have reached 75 against us this year, and only 2 of the last 22. Still, I think I'd rather face any of the other 6 seeds and even most of the 5 seeds than BYU.

I don't know the likelihood of it, but I really hope Williams is healthy. As you said Mahorcic should have a more limited role than he's had in awhile because of their unique offense. Williams would be a big help in matching up with his length and mobility. I expect Necas to be a big part of the game plan for us. He's been a big part of the defense over the past few weeks and this matchup seems tailor made for him. Dixon needs a return to form from the end of the regular season, as he struggled in Brooklyn.

I have liked the addition of the zone this year, as I think we've seen more of it this year than Dambrot's first six years combined. I don't like it against BYU though. They can shoot the lights out and they are all really good passers. You're right that it would surprise the Cougars, but I think they'd love to see it instead of our aggressive man-to-man.

As for your last note, I only know this because I lived in Omaha for two years, but Omaha is actually somewhat of a sacred city to Mormons. Obviously it's not Salt Lake or anything, but they spent the winter in Omaha on the way to Utah. The Cougars travel really well too, so it may be somewhat of a home game for BYU. I'd give just about anything to be there to help offset that, but I just don't think it's in the cards for me.

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

BYU could easily be a 4 or 3 seed.  Look at their worst losses on the information provided by Phoenix and it is scary!!  Hoping they have an off game, we have an on game, and they don't take us seriously.

Also, if you get a chance, read the article on Dambrot praising the Pitt coach.  Wow, talk about class.
Go Dukes!

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

I love seeing some of these BYU fans on Twitter saying that they are going to blow out Duquesne. They say that DU three point defense may be good in the A10 but won't stop them. I would like to remind them that the A10 shoots a higher 3P% than the Big East, Big 12, SEC, Mountain West, American, and Missouri Valley conferences.

Thanks for the link, BYUGuy.  It is an informative video and BYU's offense is formidable.  It will be a good test against the Dukes quality defense.

Highlight videos tend to not paint a complete picture. I am unfamiliar, how does Duquesne's defensive metrics and ratings stack up against Houston, Iowa State, Baylor, Kansas, SDSU, etc?

I think it is safe to say that every team and game in the tournament will present formidable challenges. BYU is going up against a very good Duke team that has been on a hot streak, and I think it is anyone's game on Thursday.

BYUGuy, the Dukes are 28th in country in KenPom Defensive Efficiency.  That would rank 7th in the Big 12.

Re: Game Thread - Brigham Young University Cougars (NCAA TOURNAMENT)

The team just got sent off by lots of fans and students on campus as they boarded the bus to the airport. The boys are officially on the road to Omaha! Keep it going!!! This has already been better than my wildest dreams could have imagined but the players don't seem to be content. I love them saying 6 more!

I was there as well!  Loved seeing the fans pack the street. Seeing the kids in the upper levels of the parking garage with signs was awesome. WTAE was there with cameras so look for it on the news tonight.  This team finally got to enjoy some celebrity today - something that has been missing from their college basketball career. The large police escort and screaming sirens as they pulled out will be something they will remember forever.

That sounds fantastic! I hope the Panthers heard the sirens in Oakland, rub it in it a bit. Hopefully a lot of those fans are still fans in November too. It is pretty funny how many Duquesne fans have popped up out of nowhere in the past couple days.

I wish I could have made it, I only saw online. I spent the week in Brooklyn and to be there for the whole run was magical. It was like all of my wildest dreams came true and it is still so surreal to look at pictures of our players and coaches wearing A10 Champion shirts/hats and cutting down the nets. Now if only I can find a way to Omaha by noon on Thursday... I just don't know if I can keep getting out of work.
