I always think it is a questionable strategy when a player of this quality goes for one of a major conference's traditionally low-achieving programs. Odds are, he goes there & distinguishes himself as a top talent on teams that struggle to go .500 overall, almost certainly lay at the bottom of the conference standings, & whose coach will be gone in 2 years or less. (Collins was once the heir apparent to Coach K but he has to be on the hot seat after going 36-59 overall & 13-45 in the conference over the last 3 seasons.)
Roper had some very big offers from other Power 5 teams as well as the cream of the mid-major crop. I just don't get why you would set yourself up for that much losing when your talents are in such demand.
Maybe he is also a spectacular student & NW was too strong a combination of BIG 10 cache & outstanding academics. He certainly would have been an enormous get for DU.
