Ferry wants his Duquesne team to create an identity

Here's an idea: play vicious defense and an attacking offense. You'll be known as a winner.

Re: Ferry wants his Duquesne team to create an identity

From the Article:  Ferry defines this as building a program without the dependence on junior college transfers.“It takes time. When you’re in a monster league like the Atlantic 10 and you see the type of players other people have and the facilities what you’re up against and coaches and great players, it takes time. Recruiting classes—we have had two legit recruiting classes—and we are going to need two more to really solidify the program and what we are going to be.”

OKAY - so here is what is scary about this.  First, ElDuque, you are asking a lot - them playing viscious defense.  Do you expect him to actually find someone who will do this, because he has proven he can't.  Good thoughts though.   How about if they play any defense instead of Ferry's LHTM defense of the last two years.

He said he has had 2 legitimate recruiting classes - so - these last two years with his two legit classes have been terrible.  Then he says he needs two more.  So, he needs two more years and then probably a year beyond that for them to "Mature."  Now, let's read between the lines when he mentions he has to go up against the "facilites" others have.  Oh, so that is the new excuse for losing, losing, losing, and no defense.  He couldn't recruit because of the facilities.  Gee, he should work in the secretary's office of a large public high school so he can handle all of the excuses that come in every day for student absences.

Re: Ferry wants his Duquesne team to create an identity

My question is what level does he expect to be winning at when he has these 4 classes? If it's just to return to RE's level, that is not enough. If he's saying that he expects to be in the mix with the top of the league in 2016-17, then that is what I want to hear. Saying it, and doing it are two different things though. The team needs to start moving forward this year. They were tough at home the second half of last season. They need to become nearly impossible to beat at home. They were awful on the road last year. They need to become more competitive on the road this year. If they do that, I'll become convinced that success can be acheived. Time to put up, or shut up.

To duq81: Amen to that.

To FAM: I find it ironic that he says he doesn't want to build via the JUCO route, although both White (started his very first game) and Stevens were heavily counted upon when they got here, and McKoy was a 2-year starter. He's recruited at least one JUCO every year, so far. Three of the four came here for two years and left after one. Man, walk your own talk. Don't bring 'em here in the first place. Speaking of recruiting, if you can't find decent players in the U.S. (I'm still not convinced he knows what an A-10 player looks like), then try to get a couple decent international kids. Their fundamentals are stronger than most American kids anyway.

Your point on getting international kids is well taken.  That has been mentioned to me before by someone who follows the sport closely and is aware of what most teams have in terms of the students they recruited.  We "should" actually be able to get a very good international player based on Duquesne's course offerings and schools.

We've never done well in that area. I'd say that Kieron Achara is our best international player (not counting Canada), and number 2 is a long way back.

Hey, I was a huge Niksa Tarle fan! ;o) Besides, the fact that we haven't done well doesn't mean it can't be done. Look at GWU.

Arndt Neuhas was a solid player and would have been one of our better wing players if he hadn't bailed after his junior year. And let's not forget Rolf Maier a legitimate 7' dud.

Neuhaus could score but was slow on D, great size (6-9) but thought it only sensible according to newspaper reports to return to Germany to work after he got his degree and had a job lined up.

Phil, if you can remember that he was slow on D, your memory is fantastic! LOL

Re: Ferry wants his Duquesne team to create an identity

What about Wayne Smith -  Might have been as good as a PLAYER as we've had in quite some time -  they even played O Canada at his last home game

You might notice that I said "except Canada". Canadian players are so much in the US mix now, that that is not usually what people are talking about when they say international. I'm thinking "across the pond".
