College Basketball's Best Shooter: Micah Mason

I am not sure we are all aware of what a great player we have in Micah.  If he shoots 51% this year (for reference he shot 56% his soph year) he will be college basketball's all time career best three ponit shooter.  This in spite of the questionable coaching move by Ferry when he moved him to point.  Micah will need some help from his teammates and coaches who have been pretty weak in running plays and setting screens for him. I hope Ferry goes back and look at the video of Davidson and see how their coach developed some intricate screens to free up their shooters.  The video below traces Micah's development and I found very interesting.

Break away from the Ferry system? Ha ha.

Personally I don't care who shoots, who scores, etc. I care about winning.

I disagree my friend.  Winning is all about who takes the shots and the quality of shots they take.  Developing plays and teaching screens for your 50% three point shooter, rather than having your 30% three point shooters with the green light to hoist shots, will give you a greater probability of winning.

Re: College Basketball's Best Shooter: Micah Mason

OK- start throwing watermelons at me.  I actually thought it was a good idea for Ferry to "try" to see how Micah would do at point guard.  At the time, he was trying to improve a very important position from last year.  He tried it, it didn't work, and he moved Mason back.  As you know, I am not a Ferry fan or a supporter - I think he was a hiring mistake and he blames his players instead of being accountable.  With all of that said, if you try something to make your team better, and it doesn't work, then go back.  At least in this instance he saw that MM as point guard wouldn't work - so he moved him back.  I wish he would have put that much thought into the worse defense in the NCAA last year!!!

FAM, as I remember he switch after receiving much criticism over the decision after the disaster non conference schedule.  You are definitely right about the excuses he used last season and blaming his players.  Do you all remember this diatribe after Robert Morris butt whopping. This was the point where Ferry lost many in the fan base.  Nobody can tolerate anymore excuses like this for not winning.  If this team does not win this year it is on Ferry and his staff.  Period!

Re: College Basketball's Best Shooter: Micah Mason

I said up front that Mason at the pint didn't make sense. Then you have him setting up misses for Jones and Colter. CLK, my point about Mason, not explained clearly, is that the Ferry system doesn't allow him to get good shots. I should have followed with, "doesn't matter who's shooting," rather than what I did say. Still, if Duquesne had a winning program, I wouldn't care who had what in the box score.

A lot of people on this board were in favor of moving Micah to the point, based on his passing, but now have amnesia. I said before it happened that his handle wasn't strong enough to play the point. To play the point, your handle has to be strong enough that you don't have to think about it. Think about TJ. When your handle is not good enough, you have to think about it, instead of the rest of the game. This affected his shooting. A 2 doesn't have to have as strong of a handle as a 1 does.

Well based on your post you are either talking about me, El Duque, FAM or you.  I remember that El Duque was skeptical from the get go.  Don't remember about you or FAM.  I never denied that I bought the Ferr Kool Aide that it would give Mason more and better shots because he had the ball in his hands.   That did not happen, and it soon, however,  became evident to me and most that it was a failed experiment.  Not sure why you would refer to that as having amnesia.

Nah, wasn't talking about you guys, just that there were plenty of posters who loved the idea, none of whom admitted to it after it blew up in Ferry's face. I know ED was skeptical of the move. I think it played a big role in the disasterous start to the season. They don't seem to have any "eureka" ideas in the works for this season, so I'm cautiously optimistic, although nothing would surprise me. I can see this team being a 10 win squad if certain things go wrong, then again, if they can get the defense to just an average level, I could see them being a surprise team in the league. Can't afford any injuries to the bigs though.
