Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

There is no doubt Duquesne needs to win this by 50 points or more. This isn't just a DII team, it's a bad DII team.

No internet video for tonight's exhibition game for us out-of-towners. What was I thinking?  I guess I'll just watch the debate.

Why not have a dry run to work out the kinks?

Good question.  Duquesne has struggled with it's internet feeds for years.  George Nieman has improved the broadcasts but there is only so much he can do with the limited resources he is provided.  I have had the opportunity to watch the programming of other schools on the A10 Network, and the product that DU produces is still shameful compared to all the other teams.   DU streams video of a cameraman's feet while walking with the camera on, or spinning the camera around at the ceiling.  The sound is the radio broadcast that is a hit or miss operation.  Several times I had to email them to remind them to turn the sound on, or off when Ray and Jarrett did not realize their mike was still live over the internet.  Duquesne is always doing things on the cheap.  For them it is all about talking big time, but acting small time.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Just found out a little more.   Duquesne now has a full-time video professional now by the name of Erik Kaminski.  I am told the University made a significant investment in upgrading the equipment he has to work with. As for tonight, the coaches did not want tonight's game to be aired.  Beginning Friday, all home games that are not nationally televised will be available to view for free on GoDuquesne.com.  Live stats however will be available tonight.

I watched a men's soccer game.  Big improvement over prior years.   They had multiple cameras outdoors.

So I'm hopeful you will see the same improvement for basketball.   Also they have been doing volleyball matches so this won't be their first attempt this season Web.

91-62 final. Was a 40 point margin when the walk-ons came in

Per Zach.    Powell out Friday too for violation of team rules.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Every year, at least one player misses games early for violation of team rules.

Not going to get Duquesne where it needs to go.

Margin of victory not impressive. Urbana had one senior, one junior, the rest freshmen and sophomores. Outcome should have resembled one of the Irish games.

Good news though: one more DII game to go!

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

ED I couldn't agree more with the suspensions it is getting tiresome. BTW this is Powell's 3rd suspension in a 12 month time frame. One take away I had from the game is it's offense as usual. Let's throw up as many 3's as possible and see what the outcome will be. We are still bring our forwards to the top of the key and asking them to make the pass inside. With a decided height advantage we made no attempt to get the ball inside.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Lewis was 8-8 from the free throw line -  Been saying for years ONE WAY TO INCREASE THE SCORING - SHOOT THE FREE THROWS BETTER.  Last year is was probably 50-50 of him coming CLOSE on his free throws.  If I'm not mistaken Gill only tried one three - that should keep some of the posters happy -  Given that the ladies have a decent number of foreign players (which I gathered from the game program) am willing to bet THEY will be a really good FT shooting team.  Know it is only ONE game against lower level competition but most pleasant surprise tonight was probably Steel and biggest disappointment was probably Castro.

Jackson had some bad numbers in his debut. Castro with 6pts, 4a and 1 turnover in 14 minutes not terrible. Hope the 1 of 4 from the line is not the norm.

I don't know enough to comment on the margin of victory.  But, what was the margin when the starters exited?  Recall also we were probably trying new stuff to see how we lIke it.

Note I did not see any of the game.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

They did exactly what they should have done to a team like Urbana.  They played excellent deny defense in the first half and beat them up physically inside.  Our bigs, even without Powell, accredited themselves well, especially Darius Lewis.  Good ball movement to get plenty of open threes.  That is what you are supposed to do when you have Micah and DC as your guards.  Gotta like the defense that Steel and Sanders play.  Even Robinson looked better overall.  The points that Urbana got in  the second half don't bother me-they got most of them against our four walk-ons and Jackson.  I liked our teams effort.  It would have served no purpose to leave the scholarship players in just to build up a 40-45 point win margin.   As to our forwards being at the top of the key, Ferry runs a double high off the elbows the same as Jim Satalin used to do at St. Bona.  He then gets a pass to one of the bigs off a pick.  Worked beautifully twice on feeds by Sanders to Robinson.  And with Gill to Lewis on one occasion for a slam.   Obviously, I was watching a different game than The Dome.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Without looking at the box score here are my quick thoughts.

I was disappointed that Powell didn't dress.  He was the player I most wanted to observe tonight.

Lewis played very well.  His form from the line was excellent.  If he can shoot for a high percentage from the line this year he could become a solid contributor.

I like Sanders.  He's a big, strong kid.  He reminds me of Jesse Hubbard as a freshman.  He knows how to rebound and I think he'll get a lot of playing time.  There could be a very high ceiling with him.

Steele was a pleasant surprise.  His game is more advanced than I expected.

Castro was okay.  I was hoping for a little more from him as he seemed to be pressing at times.

Jackson was disappointing.  He was rushing things a lot.  His game was not smooth at all.  From my first impression tonight it looks like he may be cursed with the words 'seldom used' in front of his name.

As for everyone else, I saw pretty much what I expected to see, for better or worse.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

I was a bit surprised Powell did not dress as well. It's clear Ferry is possibly more upset than disappointed because as was said in a previous comment this is his third suspension in the past year.

Castro's expectations are high but sitting out a year, he is and will continue to be rusty, so give him a little bit of time.

Ferry liked each of Sanders's five fouls. On paper five fouls in 12 minutes is not good, but he still will come down with rebounds and the coaching staff loves him.

Steele needs some work. JF wants him to be less of a spot shooter.

Jackson may have been disappointing, but he did not get in until the second half so perhaps he tried to make a big impression and probably did too much too fast.

Mason did what he does best. Underrated passer in my opinion.

Lewis did well but still needs to do so consistently.

I will have more thoughts in my DK piece.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Castro looked terrible, his game looked worse than his mullet. Jordan Robinson played a grate game, looks like he loose some weight and is getting up and down the floor better, i think he should start. Sanders looked like a young bull out there, i think he can be effective down the road, as he did grab some rebounds. I love how the score board was turned off, thank god i don't advertise with the Atletic dept, cause even if the game was streamed you couldn't  see the ads since they use cameras from about 10 years ago, NEC front Row is better. The intro video looked great... wait what intro video?  Elduque they were up by 40 when they pulled the starters and put in the walk ons! Do you want them to win by 300? GO DUKES! Crush Seton Hall, beat them pirates. Impressed he have a big east school coming to Palumbo.

Re: Exhibition v. Urbana

Urbana is a bad DII team with no height and only one senior and one junior. We have some folks picking Duquesne to win 20 games. So, yeah, I think whatever Ferry is trying should work. Exhibition game or not you have a bunch of new players and a bunch of guys who mover got off the bench last season. No reason they couldn't have gone further. And the score should have been more lopsided. But hey, unlike last year when they almost lost, at least they won.

Good to see Lewis get points in the paint. SkepticAl of course is right about the FTs.

I'm sure the insider perception is different, but I'd be concerned about Powell. Three suspensions? Something there not right.

Next game is Seton Hill, not Seton Hall. Pirates of course would have been a much better game than the annual DII cupcake.

Pretty much every team opens with a cupcake. I'd love to play Seton Hall too, but they'd never lower themselves to play us here. I doubt they'd even play us if the game were in Jersey. After the last 40 years, we're lucky that the three regional P5 teams are still willing to play us somewhere other than their home courts. Winning big will solve these problems to some degree. As for the margin of victory, don't you think the walk-ons deserved a chance to play a bit? They work hard, only to see very little court time. Was keeping the starters in to beat this team by 50, more important than giving these young men a rare chance to see some extended playing time?
