Game Thread - Seton Hill

Dukes up early.  DC with an absolutely absurd dunk.  Seton Hill is pretty awful.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

If SHU is not shooting so badly, this game would be tied. Not impressed so far.

That's why I hate these games.  They show nothing because it's hard to tell if we are improved or not.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Big difference when the starters come out, especially Colter. The starting 5 look pretty good, the bench, not so much. I want to see Lewis in the next few games. He actually looks like a legit center, but I want to see him do it against D1 competition.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Lewis can play. The question about him is stamina.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

He looks to be fitter. Believe he can put in more minutes. Robinson looks pretty good too.

Makes you wish he had been redshirted his freshman year.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Sloppy game. Monday will tell us more. New Orleans is no great shakes, but are a d1 team, and will force Duquesne to take the game more seriously.  It will be our first look at TySean Powell this year. I like that Gill did more of his work inside tonight.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Redshirt would have made sense, the video and WJAS audio synch was excellent, I wasn't able to stream to Apple TV but I think it was my iPad , Castro didn't protect the ball and James reminded me of some other instant offense Duke, maybe Jeff Bawldin. Theses guys only shoot when they get the ball, but can score.

Win by 25 by this program , I will take it anytime. Will be in Estero Fl for Gulf Coast Showcase for the three games and look forward to seeing Ray Goss after 7 years, he still looks good on tv. I will take notes and try to give some input on games and teams. And post

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

My first chance to see the Dukes. I honestly did not see much improvement defensively.  SH without their two best player laid 71 on the Dukes.  They had wide open three point looks all night, and had they shot better in the first half it would have been worse.  There were some good things offensively (hard to really assess against a DII team).  My initial impression of Castro is average.  I am looking forward to next Friday when I think we will get a better picture.

Attendance: 943.   This AD has quite a job ahead of him.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Free throw shooting was decent tonight. Cannot give up 13 threes against a decent D1 team and expect to win though. Need to close out on shooters quicker. That being said, they didn't give up many easy buckets near the hoop or much penetration that I noticed

Eric James was definitely a bright spot

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

I was also at the game.  As others have said, difficult to gauge much.  However, it was a win and my ONLy complaint is Castro - can't figure him out or what he is trying to do.  He did not pass much.

He's got to be pretty rusty. He didn't play much at Butler, then he sat out last season. He seems to have much more of a 2 guard skill set, and mentality. That will be ok next year playing with Smith, but not so much backing up Colter.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

i was neither impressed or distraught over that game. really didn't take much from it.

hope that lewis can play like that against taller, d1 talent. he was very aggressive and played with a chip on his shoulder..

robinson looks in better shape and like the rust is worn off.

castro looks rusty, hopefully it doesn't take him a year to knock rust off

james was a bright spot. much  more aggressive going to the hoop. --last year he just hung around the line and took ugly looking 3s. he seems to be the forgotten one. maybe he will be a breakthrough performer this year.

no run for jackson…?!?

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

943 people to kick off the 100th season of Duquesne basketball.

Shout out to Greg Amodio....great job! That's your legacy there, sir.

This win means nothing. The NCAA tournament committee would toss it out if it came down to measuring Duquesne for a spot. Theis team still has to prove it can beat good teams, win on the road, and not revert back to the sloppy, often selfish play that has dominated Ferry's first three years.

If Lewis steps up, that's a huge plus. It will diversify the offense. Like to see him block some shots and be a defensive force too.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Craig MeyerVerified account ‏@CraigMeyerPG   The biggest takeaway, by far, for me from this game is that Duquesne isn't close to being ready defensively. It's obvuously early, though.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Ferry claims the team has no killer instinct, hmmmm let me see could that have anything to do with the team seeming having no restrictions for firing endless 3's no matter what the score or situation.  The sophisticated offense everyone see's seems to melt away as ED so aptly stated into free form selfish run and gun. This hasn't changed one bit and unless I missed it I didn't really see any consequences to those actions.  BTW each of our starting guards had 3 assists each, and our assist to turnover ratio is very close to 1:1.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

duq81 - Agree - at least currently, he is NOT a #1.

CLK - Totally agree with Meyer - I did not see any massive defensive growth.  I hope that we don't have another year of the LHTM (Let's Hope They Miss) defensive scheme of last year.

Folks, I was also in attendance. And, yes, giving the opposing team wide open threes again and again.  Arrrgghhh. We would double the ball down in the post. The center would kick it out. No rotation to the shooter. On the other hand for those of you lauding Lewis and, I agree, he is light years improved over last year. He did not have one assist despite having heavy playing time. Still some very glaring errors and the season has already started. Not feeling very warm and fuzzy here.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

No tysean Powell Monday either and coach didn't really give a timeframe for a return. He must really be in the doghouse.

I'm not really looking for a bunch of assists from my center. I want him to be forceful, and aggressive when he gets the ball in the paint. Once he becomes consistent there, then he can begin to learn to look for the open man, as he will begin drawing heavy defensive attention. The inside game was pretty good last night, but I want to see it against a better team. If they can play near that level vs decent teams, the ceiling will rise a bit higher. I have plenty of confidence in the starting backcourt, frontcourt play is the wild card. Interior defense was pretty good, but they kept losing shooters on the perimeter. Too many wide open looks on the left wing. The bench is a big question mark, although the reserve bigs looked solid. Have to find someone to back up Colter, or he'll be playing 35+ minutes again, which isn't good.

Re: Game Thread - Seton Hill

Duq81, the Powell situation is really disappointing on a number of levels. He has such a high ceiling, probably the highest of anyone on the team. Hopefully he wakes up soon because I don't know how many more chances he well be given.
