Re: Penn State

This is an ugly game. Penn St. has a lot of height. Altering a lot of shots. 31-25 Nits at the half.

Re: Penn State

psu is long and athletic underneath, guards are physical.
they play an ugly style of b10 ball
they mixed up  2-3 zone and man def against depaul.
this should be a really good litmus test for how much improvement was made in off season.
def a game the dukes can win, but a close loss shouldn't be cause for concern for rest of season...

Re: Penn State

Anyone see DK on Sports today? Penn State column has me a little worried. They actually play some defense. If they slow down Mason and Colter, we could be in for a brutal night.

They beat VMI at home by 12.  I highly doubt we are in for a brutal night.  We may lose, but it won't be brutal.  Should be a great game actually.

Re: Penn State

Thoughts...
PSU is better than us right now...I really believe their coach is better than ours and that will be the difference.  I think Ferry will get out coached.

Though I don't mind the  CONSOL now and then, I wonder how foreign playing there feels to our players.  Is there a home feel advantage.

Friday there is a home Pitt game - if we are ahead and they hear our score they will cheer as they are always jealous of PSU.  If we hear their score and they are ahead we will boo!!

I respectfully disagree, win or lose it will be one of those ugly games.  They won't let us run up and down and get open 3's.  They will probably hurt of on the offensive glass, and their point guard Shep Garner is turning into a good player.  They were hurt by the loss of one of their prize recruits, a 6'8" guy Watkins who will have to sit out the year due to some issues with his high school work.  Taylor is a big body and usually hurts us because of his girth, and he is playing like a senior.  Duquesne needs to be fundamentally sound and play defense for entire game, and really concentrate on the defensive glass. Penn State will get back on defense and not allow easy baskets.  It will be a low scoring gut wrenching, "ugly" game in my opinion but a good test for Duquesne to see how they match up against a physical, team with some size.

Re: Penn State

I think we will win. We should've won last year and two years ago Micah didn't play. Isaiah Watkins and Ridenour played like 15 minutes each, and those two obviously were not good at all. This team is way better than that team from 13-14. Penn state is struggling to score so I think we will just simply outs score them. If the dukes defend they can win by 12-15. IDK how you can say Pat is a better coach then ferry. He has brought in some talent with newbill and frazier but has yet to win and he just got a contract extension. Granted he does have a good recruiting class coming in next year and he is starting to bring in kids from Philly. GO DUKES

Re: Penn State

I really think that both schools are in very similar situations.  Penn State is not able to hire a huge big name coach.  Even Pitt would probably struggle with that a bit (I'm thinking Shaka Smart/Brad Stevens types).  They have decided to stick with Pat, and I think it was definitely the right move.  His recruiting class next year is absurd and the best in the history of the program.  His Philly ties are what sets him apart from other PSU coaches.  His assistant, Dwayne Anderson is the main reason for his success.  Now, he needs to prove that he can coach this type of talent at the B10 level.

Ferry finally has his own guys as well.  My biggest concern with him is that I haven't seen the huge uptick in recruiting talent.  I know that this class is decent, but I feel like we are out recruiting weak programs and I have said this in the past.  That said, I know that the recruiting services aren't everything.  After all, Watkins was a 3* recruit and he turned out to be a dud.

Right,
Pat Chambers is getting recruits that we can't even talk to.  I've seen his class for next year rated as high as #6 in the nation by ESPN.  If he keeps them together along with sophomore Shep Garner, the three top flight freshmen he has in the program, this year, you are looking at 8 big-time players by next year.  As you pointed out, Philly has been good to him, but he has a couple of guys from Oak Hill, and is tapping into the strong PSU football presence in the DC/VA/MD region.  Can Chambers turn them into a winner in the Big Ten; we will see, but it would be fun to have that kind of talent to work with. GO Dukes!

Re: Penn State

It's funny how Ridenour and especially Watkins came here with big hype, and now that they're gone, they get no respect. Them, Winters, White, last year's JUCO PG du jour. Marvin Binney (haha). We love 'em when they wear red and blue and hate them when they leave.

That's why Fan stands for fanatic.  We have little logic or reason.

levon1975, really good analysis since I see things pretty much the same way.   This is the kind of game that the Dukes under Ferry have not been able to win by overcoming the opponent's style. Winning this game would be a fairly big step forward for the Dukes.

For what it's worth, Pomeroy has the Dukes winning this one 72-69, giving the Dukes a 62% chance of a win. He is also treating this as a "home" game for the Dukes, whereas it probably is more of a neutral site. He has Penn St. ranked #114 vs. the Dukes at #124; so on a neutral court, he would probably have the Dukes as a 1 point underdog. He also projecting that this game will be played at the slowest tempo of any Dukes' game this year. I'm looking forward to seeing what transpires.

Keep in mind that Chambers is recruiting for the Big10. That opens the door for better players than most A10 schools can get, which of course you need to compete in probably the second best league in the country. If Chambers were here, we'd be calling for him to be fired, seeing as how this is his fifth year, and they haven't come close to being competitive in the Big10. There is concern among PSU fans that the lack of fan support, and dead atmosphere at the BJC will eventually cause Chambers' recruiting to fall off. They fear that as soon as he can squeeze a solid year out of them, he'll be out the door, which is likely true. Penn State is currently benefiting from the end of the Big East.

Re: Penn State

PSU can only slow the game down if they hit a high percentage of their shots and/or press full-court. Clearing the defensive glass could be very important for the Dukes.  When they get Db',s the running game has been good so far.

You've got it backwards. It's Duquesne -2. The Dukes are a 2 point favorite.

I'm wondering if the attendance at tonight's game will exceed 6,000.  Come on you suburbanites, don't be afraid to come into the Burgh on Light Up Night and see the Dukes beat Penn State.

Thanks, diq81. Bad eyes on a small cell phone screen, plus a rare 5 point swing from the opening line. Dukes are favored by 2.

Re: Penn State

It seems like many of you think this game will be close.  If it is close, then as you know, that comes down to coaching.  Can Ferry coach in a close game?  I also don't buy into the fact that he has HIS guys now.  He has alluded to that.  He has had HIS guys the last two years - he recruited them, and his results were poor.  I will be there sitting close and watching closer.  I will Praise Ferry if he wins and it will be same old if they lose.  Either way, he is accountable.

Didn't he win at #10 St. Louis in a close game?
