Ray goss and JD are awful to listen to on the webcasts. They announce on the radio and on the webcasts and they have no clue that they are on the web casts too. "24 foot three for colder" Mean while his foot is right behind the arc which would make it a 22 foot three. I don't understand how he can't pronounce C-O-L-T-E-R. and now we have JD who calls darius lewis Damian lewis.. I don't know what he's smoking but the only Damian this team had was from about 7 years ago. Ray calls the african american players coming in the game "boy" if you don't think thats racist then I don't know what to say, while JD is next to him. The school needs to create a new brand, and it should start with getting rid of these 2 clowns. Put B-Mac on the radio along with Bob Healey.. will do a a way better job. "Wide open 25 foot three" while the other team blocks the shot and dunks it on on the other end. Unbelievable

Are you kidding me!  You come here and your first post is to accuse Ray Gross of being a racist.  Ray is a good man and a DU icon.  You and your PC gone a muck sensibility is what is wrong with this Country.   I don't know why I don't just ban you from this board right now. Consider yourself on notice.

Ray has been recognized as an outstanding basketball announcer, and remains so today.  He is a consummate professional in his work.

JD is a color man, and as such not considered a professional announcer, in the same sense of a play-by-play man.  He is a great former Duke, as well as a successful D-1 coach, sadly it was at RMU not Duquesne.  Like most color men, even those on the networks, they are not linguists and are not expected to be.  If you listen to other broadcasts of college games you will hear quite a few color men that are very similar to JD.  Get over it!

things escalated pretty quickly around here today.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

Ray has been recognized for being one of the best announcers in the A10.  JD gets names wrong and occasionally murders the English language.  A guy named Cope did the same, and he had a pretty good career.  It is part of what I expect when I listen to Duquesne games.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

Just read the post and the smack on Ray Goss, whoever said this ought to grow up. Ray is a good man and Jarrett was one of the best players of his time and a good coach to boot.

Ray has described a substitution like that ever since I have lisented to him, usually he says player or team nickname but sometimes says boy. And that Is due to kids age.

I have not lived in Pittsburgh since 2002 but still can spot a jag-off when I run into them, that poster is a jag-off.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

I just now read some recent posts and have made an executive decision to remove the discussion on Powell suspension.  I hope I have not offended any friends in this move.  Please IM me if you want to discuss.

Pittsburgh has always loved "characters". As I said earlier, try listening to Dick Groat doing color, but he's a local legend, and it really doesn't bother most folks. These guys will all soon be retired, to be replaced by some bland robotlike announcer.

As for the use of the term "boy", it is commonly used in a good natured manner. "my boys", the boys", "boys night out" etc. These are far different from the venomous way the word boy was used to emasculate black males down south. Referring to a teen as a boy, is far different from telling a 50 year old man to his face, "COME HERE BOY"! The intent is clear and so easy to spot that Ray Charles could see it.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

Ray and JD both own important places in Duquesne basketball history. I would hope that each got to choose the terms of retirement himself.

Both are class gentlemen, by the way. The allegations made earlier are false and absurd.

I hope that when the proper time comes, Ray will know it, and make the move himself. I hate to see guys try to hold on too long, and then have to be pushed out. I'm thinking Joe Paterno, or the ugly situation that developed at Grambling when Eddie Robinson had to be forced out of the program he built from nothing.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

Ray is a class act. I've spoken with him on several occasions. You are right CLK, PC is out of control.

I wouldn't even call this PC. The poster took Ray's words way out of context. Like anything, some have gone overboard with PC, but you can't say that it's a bad thing that it's no longer acceptable to refer to racial, ethnic, and other minorities, openly by foul names and slurs. Fifty years ago, few objected when blacks, Jews, and other groups could be referred to as Ns, Ks, Ss, and any other number of degrading names. With that in mind, PC is overall a positive thing, but common sense sometimes becomes lost in the shuffle.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

Sorry duq81 you need to go back and look at what was said.  This was a blatant case of PC gone a muck.  He took a word and drew an extreme hurtful conclusion.  There was no questioning of intent of what was meant, he immediately jumped to a conclusion based on his high sensitivity and bias. There has yet to be any apology on this board from that guy.  There was nothing innocent or positive about it, and these types of comments should not be tolerated on this board.  Let's move on past this.

Re: New Orleans Privateers

I read the thread.  The original comment that Ray is racist is quite simply put the dumbest thing I have ever read on this site.

Really just awful to read crap like that.

You misconstrued my post. The guy is an idiot. I'm just disputing the fact that too many think there should be no PC at all, and that the victims of real slurs should just accept them. There is no issue of PC here, because there was no negative intent in what Ray said. The poster is just a troll. Any controversial post from a first time poster should always be looked at with skepticism.
