Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

I come away very impressed by him. Problem is, does Gormley have the same mindset and what is Gormley's perspective on this?  I really am impressed by Harper. I remain unimpressed with Gormley.

I also read Meyers QA as a vote of confidence in Ferry by Harper.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

WEB:  What is so difficult about waiting until July 1, 2016 when Ken Gormley is officially President?. Why your incessant need for him to say what you think you want him to say right now?  He's got a multi-million dollar law school to run, professors to be an administer to and students to educate in the law.  Having read Gormley's book and other publications of his, I am extremely impressed with him. When he speaks of sports when he becomes President, as to both Olympic and men's BB, then I'll comment on his sport's mindset.  Despite your conclusion, Ken Gormley's mindset on sports is not a present problem. I can wait!!

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

So far I can't complain about anything I've heard from Dave Harper.  I think Duquesne made a wise choice.  He seems to have a great perspective of what is needed from the need for a "Strategic Plan" to student attendance at the games.  I've discussed Duquesne's great untapped potential as a nationally significant basketball program on this board in the past;  in terms of location in a city that is more attractive than ever, access to a top flight arena at CEC, membership in an excellent multi-bid basketball conference, and good academic reputation of the school.  Duquesne just needs to address it's needs in certain areas, as Mr. Harper points out, to start down the road to turning potential into reality.  We've heard a lot of lip service in the past along these lines, but not much in terms of action.  It's Harper's job to convince those running the University that there is significant benefit to the institution in taking the path to a strong and competitive program.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

Grammudder, not all of us have your deep pocket connections. We don't have the same insight into Mr. Gormley or Mr. Harper. I think WEB's question is quite valid because in the long run the two are going to have to be in lockstep on strategy & implementation. When have we ever had that at Duquesne?

I'll have to re-read Harper's comments on Ferry. It sounded to me like he's just begun to evaluate him. I certainly wouldn't include any of the quotes on a resume.

Besides, Harper has to live with the 25 to life Ferry contract.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

Duquesne and Mr. Gormley need to hang on as the twitter minions who have been blasting Duquesne over the union fight have now taken to dredging up old news to sling new mud.

That guy's a loser. He needs to grow up. He's a practicing attorney and is resorting to sophomoric Twitter trolling methods

He is a Human Rights & Labor Lawyer.  The attacks on Duquesne has been relentless on twitter over the past two years by the labor groups and their minions.  Now that Gormley has been named as the new President the attention will turn from Charlie to him.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

We are at the point where every university president can be run out of his or her job by student "activists". Ignorant kids determine who will run the universities and determine who can speak on campus etc. Expulsion and scholarship revocations would help alleviate the problem.

so back to WEB's question about where President Gormley stands on men's basketball...

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

Q. The basketball program here at Duquesne has a very rich history. How do you plan to assess the state of the athletic program and do you think you’ll be making any changes?A. I would offer to put on a jersey and go out there and play on the team, but I think that would set us back even further, so I think I’ll stick with trying to work with the new athletic director, Dave Harper, who is a fabulous new hire, and really figure out how to do fundraising and get funding for the men’s basketball program that puts us on par with some of the top teams in the Atlantic 10 conference.

Actually no.  This sounds alot like, "I have no idea. I'll just trust whatever Harper wants to do."

Nowhere near good enough for me.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

It's understandable that so many are impatient with the state of the basketball team.  God knows many of us have been patient (or maybe just comatose over constant losing) for too long and don't want to be patient any longer.  But Ken Gormley has only just been appointed and another President is in charge of the university for several more months.  I'm satisfied so far with the answers to his views on men's basketball as an incoming President who still has another job to do.  Once he enters office and actually can do something I look forward to seeing what he can do with men's basketball and the university overall.  There are many things needed to make and keep Duquesne strong that he will have to deal with.  I consider men's basketball important for all the reasons I've stated before (PR, recognition, pride, etc.) and it appears that future Pres. Gormley considers it an important piece in making Duquesne better.  The time to judge his performance in that regard will be months after he enters office and maybe even years.

I know that's not good enough for some but he was named president of Duquesne University not President of Duquesne University Men's Basketball or even DU Athletics and improvements with many programs will take time.  Maybe that's a simple view but maybe the obvious needs to be repeated.

How on earth can you be upset with that? He wont be president for another 8 months. He was asked about the basketball Program and he just said he's going to find a way to get it funding on the level of the Top teams in a A10. I don't know what else that he can say?

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

The information the AD supplied said to me he knows there are issues, he has to see what he has first, then he will see how he gets to the next level.  I like that he did not commit to keeping the coach or some other specifics.  Like anything else, talk is cheap.  Let's see what happens over the next 3 years.  I actually found hope in his responses.

WEB's from Missouri, is all. No different than the position I've taken on Ferry.

Re: A Q&A with Duquesne athletic director Dave Harper

IF he came out with a statement like a President at the University of Oklahoma reportedly made in the late 40's early 50's  "We want a UNIVERSITY our BASKETBALL team can be proud of"  Would it make you feel better?
