Re: Dukes in the National Polls

That's a little better.  At least the coaches around the country are starting to pay attention.

Re: Dukes in the National Polls

There appears to be some strange goings on with the Dukes's (NCAA-issued) and Dayton's RPI immediately prior to Sunday afternoon's game, which was won convincingly by Duquesne, and the RPIs for the two days following the game.  Note that the day following the game, Dayton's RPI improved by one position from 15 to 14 and the Dukes RPI improved from 28 to 25.   How could Dayton's RPI improve after taking such a beat-down?

                                    Dukes' (13-1) RPI  Dayton's (7-5) RPI

PM Sunday, Jan. 3             Dukes crush Dayton, 89-58

Re: Dukes in the National Polls

I thought they would have been ranked after the Dayton win.  Just keep winning Ladies, even with their bias it will soon be too obvious for them to deny.  Go Dukes!

Re: Dukes in the National Polls

GoDukes70. - There is even something wierder than that. Abliene Christian from the Southland Conference is 6-2 against D1 schools.  10-2 overall all.  They have a bad loss and only one quality win.  Other wins have been to schools in the 115 - 250 range.  And they are 13th in the RPI.  And they moved up from like the mid 20s.

It in on Realtime RPI and the NCAA women's site (your above link) and they are 12 there.

The Dukes are being punished for the slop at the bottom of their schedule. This is a lesson. If you're an NCAA type team, you can't have a bunch of +250 teams on your schedule. This is especially true if you don't have several heavyweights on the schedule to counterbalance them.

Re: Dukes in the National Polls

Remember, there is a formula for the RPI.  It is as follows:

25% winning percentage and where you win/lose, 50% opponents record, and 25% opponents-opponents winning percentage. Hence, even with the loss, because 50% of the RPI is your opponents record, Dayton got a bump playing the Dukes, and the hit was lessened because it was on the road.  Duquesne also got a bump.  It's why the conference winning out-of-conference games is so important...75% of your RPI is your opponent and their SoS, only 25% is whether you win or lose.

Abilene Christian is the perfect example why you can't use RPI alone.  Good overall record at 6-2, and both losses are on the road to P5 schools, so they gamed the RPI numbers.  Don't worry, the committee will notice later.

Some of the slop may not look so bad in the end.  Sure, St. Peter's and Lafayette will (thankfully the Dukes did only play Lafayette and not someone too much better - they may have lost with the way they were playing that day).  But, now with conference play starting it wouldn't surprise me if Howard, NC A&T, and UMES eventually should go close to 500 as a group in conference play which will rise the SoS numbers.  You need some cupcakes early on in the season too, especially for a team that was going to have two freshmen starting and required to play major minutes.

Re: Dukes in the National Polls

Duquesne Ladies up to #3 in the Mid-Major poll and Chassidy Omogrosso is the player featured in the picture this week.

Perhaps this paragraph from Graham Hays of espnW.com on the difficulty of the so called mid-major teams scheduling top non-mid-major teams for a home and home series may address your remark about Duquesne's scheduling.  Many of teams from the power conferences don't want to take a risk on playing the Dukes at the Palumbo.  Their willingness to play the Dukes is very frequently limited to having the Dukes travel to their home court.

"The best mid-major programs, mimicking what the likes of Connecticut, Notre Dame, Stanford and Tennessee have admirably done for so many years, increasingly play one another. Dayton played Gonzaga, Princeton and Green Bay in succession. Green Bay played Drake and South Dakota State earlier this season. South Dakota State scheduled Marist and Bowling Green, albeit in what turned out to be rare down cycles for those programs. They play these games, in part, because it is difficult to find power programs that will schedule home-and-home series."
