Re: Recruiting

Ferry has moved on to 2017 recruiting and seems to be focused on the Canadian pipeline. He has offered some of Canada's top players.

http://verbalcommits.com/players/nazir-thomas

http://verbalcommits.com/players/therren-shelton-szmidt

And recently 2018 player Danilo Djuricic

Been around since 2004...no idea if they had basketball forever though.

Re: Recruiting

From the address on the website they may be located in the old Immaculate Conception High School building. Looks like last year they were located in the old Patton Grade School. If they've been playing basketball they get no coverage in the local paper.

Re: Recruiting

They get no coverage in the local papers because they play in a league that is made up of a number of " Christian" schools that are mini basketball factories. Only 3 of the players are Pittsburgh kids and none of them is recognizable. Only 2 games on their schedule involve either City League or WPIAL games ( Obama Academy and Valley.  I've been involved in local hoops a long time and this is the first they have surfaced.

Re: Recruiting

Sounds like a good prospect. WVU will be serious competition though.

Big story in todays Washington Observer Reporter. If this coach gets this going like he plans to we could have some pretty good talent right on our doorstep.

Thanks Mulder.  I saw your comment on the Sports Minute article correcting the spelling of Duquesne.  Good man.

Re: Recruiting

I've thought this for a few weeks now but the fact that we are still recruiting 2016's suggests to me that someone will be gone next year. The only person I could see that being is Castro. The staff has been going out and watching guards play, especially shooting guards. I think Castro has been a huge disappointment and that ship has most likely sailed.

Never really seen this before but can we just send castro on his merry way?

Not necessarily.  Good coaches never stop recruiting because you never know what will happen.  Kids transfer, some recruits may not qualify, possible academic issues.   There are no new offers out there, just interest.

I agree that given the preseason hype Castro has been a disappointment.  I don't think, however, that Ferry is ready to give up on the kid yet.

Definitely agree you can never stop recruiting and maybe I'm reading too much into the situation, but I just don't see how Castro's standing with the team could improve at this point. Your getting into the most crucial stretch of the season, and for that reason I see no way his playing time or responsibilities on the team increase, especially due to his lack of playing time or impact on any games up until this point.

My feeling that he's gone next year is kind of from a similarity I see between him and Dez Ridenour. Fairly highly touted recruits that are taking quite a bit of time to show any kind of promise. The major differences I see between the two of them kind of work against each other though. Dez actually had a couple big games in his career and showed some promise with his slashing, athletic, and defensive abilities. On the other side of things Castro has basically shown us nothing to suggest he could help this team going forward, even after spending a year at what would be considered a bigger program and then having an entire year to practice with this team and a decent amount of competitive games this year to show something.

The main difference I see between them which made me realize last year that Dez was for sure gone was in-game body language. Last year, especially as the season progressed, you could see Dez was checked out, whether it was not even trying to act like he was listening or involved in dead ball huddles, or having no reaction when a teammate made a play as the rest of the bench jumped up and celebrated. I look for these little things when I go to the games. Castro still seems genuinely interested in being part of this team and is often seen smiling and laughing with guys on the bench. Don't get the same impression that he just wants to get the hell out of here.

It will be interesting to see what happens, but I have to admit I'd like to see us take a shot on getting an upgrade with the roster spot. Castro isn't 18 anymore, he's 22 so it's hard to see him taking a great leap in terms of improvement.

I'm not ready to give up on him, either.

Re: Recruiting

Castro has already sat out a year, so his options would be limited. Is there anyone who saw him 2 summers ago at Greentree, and could tell us if they notice any major differences in his play? I can remember the Pitt fans being impressed with him. Did he look quicker then?

I am 50/50 on Castro - I think that would be a lot of turnover at the guard position if we send him packing. Jim has referenced in past years that he hates wasting time teaching new drills to kick off camp. The concern I have is that when Castro is on the floor it becomes 1 on 5 - similar to that of our JUCO last season in Stevans.

I have to disagree with a previous poster who referenced his body language as being positive. From my perspective, I think it's pretty negative on and off the floor - I think he looks extremely disinterested. Does anyone recall his body language in the summer league where he was having success? Was it similar there?

I'm not willing to give up on him either. He was highly recruited for a reason and some average chump isn't setting scoring records at the summer league even with relaxed defense. There's something there, coach just needs to try to find it again

Re: Recruiting

Does Castro have any health issues--mental or physical-that could explain his play?

I think he is a shooting guard first, but I'd really like to see some minutes to see if he has "court vision" , Eric this last game with the "no-look behind the back in the paint pass" is court vision.  Too many Color  Commentators constantly say Eric James has "court vision" BUT we need a under-classman guard to get some minutes these next 10 games that shows some court vision. Anybody can be the shooting guard, Hey even Gill looks like it right now, but we need someone that sees the whole court and  sets the play, or,  down to the last seconds, drives and dishes for the dunk. That's court vision.  Castro might. or might not be it, we just don't know.  If Ferry finds that player, (maybe here right now off the bench , or maybe coming in ) but just  find him!
