Offline Offline It says click to view team but you actually just scroll down Offline I like the picture of Willie Somerset. Notice he's wearing #25. In those years, Duquesne wore even numbers at home and odd numbers on the road. Offline Lionel Big Train Billingy. Nuff said. Offline From Mike Rice onward I saw all those guys play, and got to meet many of them. We have had some players at Duquesne. I heard stories of Green, Ricketts and all the others pre 1961. Offline Ditto with me Phildog plus Green and the Ricketts brothers at the Duquesne Gardens. And if anyone visited or participated in the informal "league" games at the John Munhall Neighborhood House, The Kingsley House in E' Sliberty, the Soho House and other neighborhood haunts, you probably, as I did, got to meet Sihugo Green, the Ricketts brothers, Chuck Cooper and Dr. Fletcher Johnson. Dudey Moore used to troop the kids around to the neighborhood recreational haunts and give free tickets away to the Duquesne games. This is almost like reliving the Milton Berle, Red Skeleton and Jack Benny shows!! Good memories!! Offline No Tom Pipkins? Offline No Tom Pipkins? We've had a lot of good players, so a lot of good players didn't make it. Bob Slebodnik, Oscar Jackson, Rick Suder, Wayne Smith, Bryant MacAllister, Fletcher Johnson immediately come to mind. Offline Damian Saunders???? Offline All of the guys mentioned either played on elite teams at Duquesne, or played in the NBA, with the exception of BB, and Atkins, both of whom played on teams that reached the postseason twice. Aaron Jackson rates because of the role he played in lifting us out of the gutter. Offline Damian Saunders???? I think both he and billy Clark would be more appropriate for an honorable mention list. They were fun to watch though Offline No Tom Pipkins? We've had a lot of good players, so a lot of good players didn't make it. Bob Slebodnik, Oscar Jackson, Rick Suder, Wayne Smith, Bryant MacAllister, Fletcher Johnson immediately come to mind. I hate to sound like one of "those fans" but a few more guys from the modern era could easily replace some guy whose fans are all dead, and is only known by a black and white grainy photo. Offline Norm Nixon is a must. Offline No Tom Pipkins? We've had a lot of good players, so a lot of good players didn't make it. I hate to sound like "that fan" even more but your right. The popular thought of Duquesne basketball as being something of significance so far in the past that it will never find the same level of relevancy is perpetuated by things like this. Realistically, yes those were the best players on the best team's we ever had and also probably ever will have, but your alienating any member of the fan base younger than 45+ with a list like this. Besides the big names, Nixon, Cooper, Rickets, Green, I literally have never heard of the rest of these guys and would be lying if I said I really cared all that much about their careers, other than the fact that they raised the profile of the program a long, long, time ago. You have to highlight some of the more recent players too or else your basically saying yourself we've had three good players since 1975 based on this list. I wouldn't take anyone off, but add some more recent guys people like me could actually relate to. I wouldn't take anyone off, but add some more recent guys people like me could actually relate to. This is a list that judges players in the context of the time they played. Thus, while Sihugo Green wouldn't be a first team AA today, he was in his era. It can be hard to judge guys like Wayne Smith, because they were the best players on very bad teams. Even on bad teams, someone has to be the leading scorer. None of those guys played in the league, and none of them really lifted the program above mediocrity. Remember, this is an all century team, not a list of guys you'd want if you had to go take on Carolina today. If I were putting together a 10 man team to go out and compete today, I'd choose the following: Offline Here's a question for you, duq81, for the 2 years that they played together, who do you think was the better player, Bruce Atkins or Doug Arnold? Offline Here's a question for you, duq81, for the 2 years that they played together, who do you think was the better player, Bruce Atkins or Doug Arnold? Atkins easily. He brought it every night. Arnold was capable of dominating, but he disappeared at times. Offline I'll agree it was Bruce, but not easily. I really liked Doug's offense. He was an extremely difficult player to guard. Offline Bruce Atkins played like a 6'8" 240 lb power forward, which is what he was. He was the model of consistency at scoring and rebounding, Doug Arnold, at 6'10" played like a 2-guard, which is what he wasn't. He was the model of inconsistency--could score 40 or zero given a particular day. Loved both of those buys, but I'd take Bruce in a New York second!! Offline I think this my first post here. I had to chime in on Saunders being left off the All Century team. His overall stats are awesome, he won more awards than anyone else in 40+ years, played in as many post seasons as Alston, James, & Ajax combined, & had as much to do with DU's return to respectability as any coach or player. Offline Fitzgerald Bobo for the All Century name team! This is what I mean! He clearly had the career to get his name on that list. I mean the guy was an NBA draft prospect, albeit a fringe prospect, but still a fantastic player. Someone mentioned earlier him and Bill Clark could be considered for honorable mention, I think Clark fits that description because he was a late bloomer but Suanders was highly impactful throughout his career.
All Century Team
Duquesne Names a 27 Man all century team. Pretty cool blast from the past

This might cause a little backlash but if were honest, Most of the guys on the current team would probably smoke any one of those guys from the "iron dukes days" of the 40's and 50's in one on one or as a team. With how much the game, strategy and tactics, athleticism, and skill level of the players has progressed in that long span of time, it probably wouldn't even be close. There are just a million reasons more contemporary guys should be on the list. •Thread Starter

Point guards: Nixon, James
Shooting guards: AJax, Suder
Small Forwards: Saunders, M Davis
Power Forwards: Alston, Atkins
Centers: Billingy, Achara
This team could compete for a national championship today, even though it omits some of the Dukes' greatest players. Somerset could play on this team, but with Nixon, and James, you don't need him. Si Green is the greatest Duke ever, but 6'2" forwards just don't work in this era.
