Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

This game looks like it will be a close one.  Though Davidson is 4-4 in the A-10 and 12-7 overall, their
RPI is 58 which is actually on the cusp of an NCAA team.

Our Dukes are 5-4 in the A-10 and 15-7 overall, with an RPI of 91 which though better than previous years, doesn't guarantee even an NIT bid.  I know, it is early, but I am wondering if some of the "easy"  OOC teams we played will hurt us.  Hopefully we will win on Saturday but it appears that Davidson has faced tougher competition so far this year.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

This morning driving in I hear the sports folks talking about Pitt playing Saturday at noon...no mention of Duquesne.  COME on Duquesne media...come on Dave S., get that info out there!!

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

Love when we get to the point in the season when you start to have enough insight about other teams to somewhat scout and predict game planning from both sides. I haven't seen much of Davidson this year but I have seen GW a good bit because a lot of their games are on TV. Link to Davidson board about GW game:

GW plays a similar, more polished style that resembles what we do. They have some post players that can score down low, Watanabe and Larson. Some dynamic forwards that can drive to the basket, and shoot mid range shots (which ours don't) in Watanabe and Garino, and have a number of guards who can distribute and shoot well in Mitola, McDonald, and Jorgenson. Sounds like Davidson has a pretty small lineup which gave them alot of trouble with weak side offensive rebounds and putbacks off of drives and drive and kicks. Posters mentioned them playing with four guards at different points in the game and I think this could be a great strength for us. If we can defend the perimeter and limit Jack Gibbs impact in the game, we could see a positive result Saturday.

FYI - we already played GW and Davidson this year in terms of where to look for scouting...

Well I realize that. I also realize it's way more important to look at current form. I think it's safe to say that Us, GW, and Davidson are all at different points as a team now than we were at the beginning of conference season. I think relying on results from over a month ago are not as indicative to what will happen Saturday as what has happened in the last week or two with the teams.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

Duquesne offered me 2 tickets for the Davidson game. Reaching out to former season ticket holders.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

This game is a must win if we want to be in good position for an NIT bis, should we fail to win the A 10 Tournament. If we win this, plus 2 out of the three games vs GW, UR, and URI, we would go into Brooklyn with an RPI of around 75, provided we take care of business vs UMass, and Fordham. An RPI of 75 should be solidly in the NIT field.

Going to call them today and thank them and show up at the game.
I didn't turn down my season tickets because the team was doing badly. I turned them down because the team was doing badly and they were raising my ticket price $135 per.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

Ferry was on the Pgh. 93.7 the Fan this morning.  About time!!  Pitt at noon, us at 12:30, Robert Morris at 4:00.  Ferry talked about how good the coach is, that they have one of the top players in the country, and that they will shoot approximately 15-20 three pointers a game.  If we play tough defense we will be okay, if not...
He also said there appears to be a renewed interest on campus.  This is one of these games that Duquesne has to win for attendance reasons also.  If they get a lot of kids there tomorrow, they have to win so they will come back.   You know the Dukes students, they won't come back if the team loses.

Ferry is also supposed to be on Stan Savran's show on 970 ESPN between Noon and 2 today (also on 106 something on FM).

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

He also mentioned this in response to a question about unknown commodities heading in to the season, am I'm paraphrasing:

Yeah, we obviously knew what we had with Micah and DC but Marqwell kept grinding and grinding away.  And when Jeremiah went down, he continued to grind away to put himself in a position to really help this team.  He has stepped in a way that has really helped this team and I'm excited for his continued growth and potential.  That's the sign of a true team.  Other guys picking each other up.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

When Ferry discussed the game tomorrow and the team on the radio, one of the things he spoke about positively was he teaches the players to be UNSELFISH.  He mentioned this a couple of times.  I am wondering if other than him not being quick, if Ferry doesn't play Castro because it appears he is NOT unselfish.  He hardly passes, shoots a lot, etc.

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

Wonder if we are going to get out on the 3 point shooters a little more tomorrow?  Davidson could put a hurtin on us out there.

This Dukes team can put the hurt inside on both ends, these young guys as starting to dominate inside. I think Davidson is going to try to cover the 3, which if we are ready is opening up the points in the paint.  I hope Ferry has them ready.  Go Dukes

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

One of the downsides of taking a lot of 3's is if they miss, we usually get the rebound and can run the floor.  If we play tough defense we could run them out!

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

As Arty Johnson on Laugh-In used to say "Verrrry interesting"   Dukes early favorite by 2 on all Las Vegas odds lines!  Some people think our Dukes can beat Davidson!!!!

Re: Davidson vs. Duquesne Saturday

This is a key game if we're looking for the Dukes to exceed our preseason expectations. They are close to a lock to win the 17-18 games most expected, so now, the question is, can they exceed those expectations, and if so, by how much. I'd say the next step is 20 wins, and a spot in the NIT. As I posted earlier, they will need to win every home game except for GW, plus win 2 games of the three vs GW, Richmond, and URI. That would pretty much assure an NIT bid, although you'd like to win the first one in Brooklyn to be sure. To get a home game in the NIT, they either need to add another win to those listed above, or beat a good team in Brooklyn. To get an at large bid to the NCAAs, we'd pretty much need to win out, and then win at least two in Brooklyn, and I'd still be nervous.
