Offline Rick Pitino, who is one of the most accomplished coaches in the game, broke down what it takes to win in the NCAA Tournament. Defense, discipline on offense, and passing. Surprisingly, when I watch Duquesne University MBB, I see none of these things. He didn't say what was necessary to win the CBI, but I suspect getting your only decent shooter shut down, dribbling aimlessly before launching a poor shot, and standing flat footed while the other team murders you with threes might not be the right formula. Offline But then the age old question: how to get those program-changers to come to Duquesne? Or, how to recruit? Anybody have any ideas, other than cheating? Perhaps one of you has a 6'10" son who is highly skilled and would come to the Bluff. Then again, would you send him to Pitt or North Carolina? It's all about recruiting, always has been, always has been a big part of coaching genius. Of course, first you need a program to get the kid, but the kid won't come unless you have a program. Any ideas? Right now, I go for cheating. At least we would win for a while, then who knows, maybe end up with a 30-on-30 on ESPN like Michigan.
Re: Winning Makes 'Em Show Up
While we sometimes chastise Pittsburgh basketball fans for somehow being less knowledgeable than fans of other cities, I think they're actually on top of things. They know they've had an inferior product on display at Palumbo Center for the past four years. Ferry does his thing, which doesn't work in this conference. He'll continue to stick with it, because he somehow got lucky twice in 10 years at LIU (no one wins the A10 because they're lucky), and it will continue to bomb here. Next year you'll have the first true PG in Ferry's tenure here, and he'll be complemented with 7 footer with limited skills, a guy with the body of an NBA 4 who wants to be a jump shooter, and a bunch of 2-3-4 crossovers with limited ball handling and shooting skills.
