Re: Let's be in it to win it! First up Nebraska-Omaha

Darius picks up lots of fouls because he doesn't move his feet well on defense.  He gets called for blocking when guys go to the hoop against him.  On offense he is hampered by struggles catching the ball and going exclusively to his right.  To his credit he has worked to improve himself to get to the point where he can give you 18-20 minutes a game, but he will need to make huge strides before next season to be anything close to a reliable big man at this level.

Maybe Ferry's plan was to extend the game to give Robinson practice time with his free throws?

That's one of the things that blew my mind as I was screaming obscenities at my computer during the last 4 minutes  (45 minutes of real time), watching Robinson hit free throw after free throw in clutch time and thinking, "Gee Jim, maybe if he played a bit more during the season, we might have one or two more wins."

I think Ferry is playing him only to keep him from transferring

I've been hoping for more playing time for JR the entire season. He is clearly our most skilled big man offensively. He's smooth with his back to the basket. Obviously he doesn't have ideal length but he should have been in the rotation all year

One of Ferry's problems is that despite having numbers all year (Lewis, Robinson, Sanders, Gill, Powell), he typically didn't sub 2 bigs in when 2 bigs came out. You'd get a big and Marquell Jackson, or a big and Steele. Then he'd be in his four small routine where we get picked apart on defense, on the boards, and have a one-and-done offense because four alpha shooters are trying to "get theirs" instead of trying to win.

Just a curious point, look at the 1st half box score from last nights game, then look at the box score of the second half?  Looks like two entirely different games.  Look at the minutes played by Darius and Robinson in the first half and second.  Our defense sort of disappeared without them.

Dukes2012 - I agree.  JR may not have ideal length, but neither did Charles Barkley, and he was pretty effective around the rim.

Duq102, when Gill plays a balanced game he can be really good.  I missed the first half last night so I couldn't say.  In the second half he did hit an important 3 when we had our late game spurt, but other than that the O was so devoid of any flow it was hard to watch.  Again, Gill has at least gone to the hoop a bit this year, and has taken some mid-range jumpers, he just needs to do more of it.  If he does, and he posts up now and then, he will be one of our best players next year.  Indy I thought your Barkley analogy was spot on.

And Lewis is not the only one who doesn't move their feet on defense. This team cannot stop any ball penetration because they don't move their feet to keep their man in front of them. They also don't bend their knees to get into an effective defensive position. They then defend by reaching. I would have James, Jackson and Steel doing defensive drills until their legs fell off during this offseason. All are capable of playing better defense than they have shown. Coach some defensive fundamentals. Sheesh.

Does anybody know what will happen to Castro?  He did not play against  Omaha instead Haus, a walk on played.  When a walk on plays ahead of a schollie, the schollie is usually on his way out.

Haus played 12 seconds!!  Doubt if they would do THAT to a scholarship player - even one like Castro who is probably so deep in the dog house at this point - Daniel Boone couldn't find him -  Since he already sat out a year - I presume he will transfer to a lower level school where he would be immediately eligible -  I DO think he has the ability (could so many coaches have been wrong?) for some reason just hasn't shown it.
