Castro

$1,000 from Next year of Ferry's contract (he won't notice) says Castro's ass is GONE next year!

Re: Castro

I assume that's an assumption on your part.

I don't know that I'd give up on him so soon. I said way back at the beginning of the season, when some were hailing him as the savior of the program, that DC and MM would never leave the court and he'd never get enough PT. Even when Jones went down with the injury, Castro didn't have that swingman-sized frame to fill some of those minutes. You take the layoff, the lack of PT, and when the kid gets into the game for his brief moments maybe he tries to do too much.

I don't know enough about his game to say whether he can help or not. I have it on good authority that Tarin Smith will be a stud, and he'll need a backcourt partner. Josh Steel can't handle the ball too well, Marquell Jackson is probably in the same boat. Why couldn't Castro right his own ship over the summer and take a starting spot?

If he can't, I'd love to see Jimmy Ferry get creative. Start Lewis-Robinson (or Sanders)-Gill-Smith-James. Would love to see a little ground and pound on DU's part with two natural bigs on the court all the time, Gill seems better suited for the three, where he'll create matchup problems, and if James can work on ballhandling and footwork over the summer, he and Smith would give us an athletic backcourt.

I sure hope Ferry finds a backup PG too. I don't understand why this isn't a focus for him (look at Duquesne's page on the Verbal Commits site). It's like trying to play football with one QB, or baseball with one SP.

Thanks to CLK I, who usually don't follow recruiting, have checked out this page.  Also, how about no one even on the radar as a center to replace Lewis.  That one raises and eyebrow for me.

Re: Castro

Tejas, I find Ferry more predictable than a northeastern weather report in March. He believes in small guards and undersized bigs who hoist from anywhere on the floor. Lewis was an aberration. That formula does not work in the A-10. But Ferry will keep going that route until his contract expires.

The other thing that page allows you to do is track the trail of bodies leaving the program every year. Winters, Binney, Stevens, Ridenour, White, Watkins, Powell.  All the talk of program building, but zero evidence in four years.

Agree, this team is big next year, if we use them like you mentioned. I like the idea of getting James to work on ball-handling too, he's quick and seems to have good court-vision. If Ferry doesn't get a decent PG, then James and Smith could be doing more to run an offense.

Hey wait a second, wasn't there an email floating around about four years ago that talked about how the then head coach had an unacceptable amount of transfers?

Re: Castro

From what I can tell Ferry is currently actively recruiting a point guard and a PF/C (see recent offers in the Recruiting thread).  This leads me to believe there is a strong possibility that another player is leaving.  I think Castro is the obvious guess.  I know it sounds like I have been drinking the spiked punch, but I believe the three guys that have signed will prove to be his best non transfer freshman recruits. As I said before don't be surprised if Littleson starts at the 2 and Mike at the 3 before the end of next season.

But will they last? Seems like his top ones don't.

Re: Castro

I never understood the hype about Castro being here. He went to 3 high schools & lasted less than a year at Butler. He doesn't stay in one place too long, either by choice or because he's not wanted. Even if he turned out as advertised, I never believed that we'd get 3 years out of him.

That is a good question.  I think most of the guys that left under Ferry were recruiting mistakes that he forced out.  Binney, Stevens, White & Watkins seem to fall into that category.  The current class of Lewis, Littleson & Mike I truly believe can be very solid A10 players.  So the question of will they last depends on what happens to the program.  If Ferry and Harper can deliver by winning and getting more that 10 students to show up at the games (meaning a complete turnaround in the atmosphere surrounding Palumbo and reviving the alumn) I think they will stay and prosper.  If not....
