Kellon Taylor - Rare two for one deal

Mike Jones ‏@DeMathaHoops 26m26 minutes ago So proud of 2016 Kellon Taylor on his commitment to play Football at Duquesne Univ. He will also play hoops too. Rare student-athlete.

Kellon is a 6'5" 205 lbs SF.  He’s also received basketball offers from Manhattan and Wright State, along with interest from George Washington, Old Dominion and St. Bonaventure.

Wow this is huge for the football program and could be good for the basketball program too. He is a much higher level recruit than the football team usually gets. He has good size and athleticism based on the few basketball videos available. Also love the fact that he plays on a great high school basketball team like dematha

Re: Kellon Taylor - Rare two for one deal

Anything the hoop team gets out of him is a free bonus. Maybe the higher level football programs said no to the idea of him playing basketball.

Nice. Jerry Schmitt has brought in some intriguing prospects the past two years.

Yeah the article said that Virginia tech and Boston college only wanted him to play football. He also recently picked up basketball scholarships from Manhattan and wright state. So essentially we will have 14 D1 scholarship-level players on our team despite only having 13 scholarships. Article also says that he is a high level defender and rebounder. Good day for both football and basketball

I'm assuming that the football program will provide the athletic scholarship for Mr. Taylor.  I came across the Tribune-Review's brief article about the Dukes' landing a two sport athlete.  The article claims that Mr. Taylor was also offered a two sport deal (football & basketball) by both Robert Morris and Hawaii: http://triblive.com/sports/college/duquesne/10292485-74/basketball-football-duquesne

Well, that's another recruiting battle in which the Dukes pushed Bobby Mo aside.  I guess Pittsburgh's weather also made the difference in his not choosing Hawaii.  I can recall that there was an article written in a local publication entitled "The Year of the Colonial."  I'm not sure if it was referring to the 2014-2015 season or the 2015-2016 season.  However, let's see how the Dukes have done against the Colonials this season:

Football                Dukes, 16 @ RMU, 7
M Soccer              Dukes, 1 @ RMU, 2 (2OT)
W Soccer              RMU, 0 @ Dukes, 2
W Volleyball          Dukes, 3 @ RMU, 1
W Cross Country  Dukes, 15 - RMU, 50 @ Duquesne Duals
M Cross Country  Dukes, 15 - RMU, 50  @ Duquesne Duals
W Basketball        NO GAME PLAYED!  RMU refused to play the Dukes because Bobby Mo's retiring As_ H coach, Sal Buscaglia, was in a snit over the transfer of former RMU player, 6' 3" Judith Sole, to the Dukes' women's team at the end of the 2014-2015 season.  It is my understanding from very reliable sources that the consequences of Sal's Snit will continue under the tutelage of the new head coach of the Colonials and his loyal son, Charlie Buscaglia, so as to prevent RMU from scheduling the Dukes' women's team for as long as Judith Sole plays for the Dukes (2 seasons). Sounds reasonable⁉️

M Basketball       RMU, 65 @ Dukes, 72
W LaCrosse        RMU, 7 @ Dukes, 14

So much for the "Year of the Colonials" - at least when it comes to going head-to-head against the Dukes

Re: Kellon Taylor - Rare two for one deal

So he won't take up a scholarship position? Would that mean we would have to still fill up two more spots?

I would assume that ferry would require as part of this deal that Taylor be on a football scholarship since there are nearly 40, as opposed to the 13 basketball scholarships. Plus, it seems like he is a better football player at this point than basketball player. Still, he has multiple D1 scholarships for basketball so it is huge to basically get a 14th D1 player for free

I don't know for sure that Mr.Tylor's scholarship will come from the football team, but I always thought that John Rosato, recruiting co-ordinator for the Dukes' football team, always held back a few athletic scholarships just in case he became aware of a talented high school recruit or transfer student late during the recruiting season who had not officially committed to any college.

Just read an article that says he is more concerned about basketball than football.

Hence my kudos to Schmitt, and Coach Rosato, of course, who is a hidden gem at Duquesne.

John was my fraternity brother (OTR). He was one helluva football player in intramurals. Yeah the Betas killed us but they killed everybody. I was the slowest defensive lineman in the history of the intramural program. I think I registered a sack against the TEKES though.

DU just announced that Coach Rosato is retiring.

Big, big, big, big, big loss.

Really big loss.

Don't know the man, never met him, only watched from a distance, with admiration, what he's done for the football program. This is akin to the retirement of Nellie King, losing an ambassador of this magnitude.

102, that may be a little hyperbole for a kid who averaged 6 ppg in HS. He looks like a decent walk on with decent size who brings a tough football mentality to the team. Whatever we get is a bonus to the team, but I like your enthusiasm

That was a little bit of sarcasm on my part brother, I am more surprised than anything that it is getting as much media coverage as it is. He was like an average high school basketball player and a d1 prospect for football. I can't imagine hell really see any playing time or anything. Cool story though I guess. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other kids on the football team that were better than last years walk ons. That 6'9" marshall machledt or whatever his name is actually had decent high school numbers, better than this Taylor and that kid will never play.

The newspaper article I read said that Taylor did not shoot the ball a ton since two of his teammates are among the best players in the country, but it also said that he is a great defender and rebounder. Taylor had at least two D1 offers for basketball so I wouldn't discount his abilities based on his scoring average. CLK is right though, anything we get out of him as a non basketball scholarship player is a major bonus

Re: Kellon Taylor - Rare two for one deal

Wayne Kapers had offers from wake forrest. I played against him in intermeals and he put over 10 3s in my face. He would be better that marshall macledt when it comes to walk ons.
