Another Scholarship Opening?

Jon Rothstein Ohio State transfer A.J. Harris told @CBSSports he's considering Duquesne, UMass, and Cleveland State. No visits currently set.

This is mysterious, for sure. The kid was a good recruit though. You don't often see a 5'9" 4-star recruit

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

I'm guessing Castro is transferring to a Div. II school.  If we are lucky enough to get Harris, he will sit a year.  That leaves LIttleton, Lewis, Smith, Blackman, Steele and Jackson as the guards.  Robinson and Lewis the centers.  James, Mike, Abrahamson and Sanders the forwards.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

Just my opinion, but if I was going to take a sit out transfer it would be replacement center for Lewis. I don't know if the 7 footer from VT is still available but I would take a shot on him.  I would use a 2017 scholarship on one of the good PG prospects on the list above.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

This is very interesting to me. First, 5'9 is pretty damn small. Watching DC struggle to guard taller PGs was terrible to see. However, of course this kids talent is off the roof when it comes to his handle or what not. He only averaged 2.2 points his freshman year at Ohio State. This is the only cause of concern for me. I would hate to see that his height caught up to him in college ball.

Secondly, is it true Castro will be leaving us?

Third -- If we can get this guy......Yes to PG....but if not we need to go after a replacement for Lewis.

Who says that any 7 foot transfer out there wants us? You better take a 4 star player when you can get one. Bring in a big man in the fall class.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

There's a pretty good list of failed mini guards here already. Of course, the list of bigs who transfer out is also pretty long.

This isn't building a program brick by brick, it's BOHICA.

I think this situation alone gives us a lot more depth than I can remember us having in recent memory, that's 12 guys who could realistically step in and play serious minutes. Gotta wonder if Mike Lewis gets hit with a red-shirt, but he's realistically the only backup option as a true point guard, so who knows.

Always breaking new ground, El Duque.  I believe that this is the first use of BOHICA on this board.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

I just think if a spot opens it needs to go to a true big. We only have three on our roster right now.

Mitchell Robinson who decommitted the other day?

We're probably on the top of his list just ahead of North Carolina.

Washpa you have a way of saying so much with one or two sentences, it's pretty awesome.

C'mon. Three freshmen, three little used sophomores, potentially replacing a third year redshirt guy with a player who sits out. If you think that's depth, you're not paying attention. See how it plays out first. If Ferry is Ferry and guys you're counting on get nailed to the bench, any hope for depth the following year is shot.

Of course, if you're right, remind me next year at this time and I'll happily eat crow.

Bend over, here it comes again. Popular in NJ when McCreepy and Whore-zine were governor and taxes were heaped on us any which way they could.

Now we have the chubby guy. We can't win. Good thing I live only a few minutes from PA.

Not all 5'9" players are the same.  Players skills and quickness vary despite them being the same height.  The key to guarding the perimeter is to be able to control the shooter and the drive if he fakes and pulls it down to drive.  DC had trouble controlling penetration when he closed out hard on a shooter.  This guy might have the ability to do that.  We don't know yet!

My limited education has a lot to do with that.

Other schools that offered aren't that crazy....on espn it list Depaul, Murry State, and Umass as the top choices.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

BTW, no guarantee that Rene would get bumped to take the transfer from OSU.  It could be someone else.  Whether Harris picks Duquesne or not it appears that there might still be some movement.

As long as the grad transfer rule is in place, non medical redshirts are a bad move. No point in sitting Lewis out so that he can go play his senior year somewhere else.

You think this team doesn't have more depth than the last few years? HA

Guess you haven't been paying attention. Two of our freshman are more highly rated than anyone in recent memory. The little used sophomores were freshman last year, almost every freshman is "little used". A big 10 transfer point guard, a 16 ppg d1 scoring guard with size, a 6'8" d1 forward who managed to average about a point more per game than "the amazing LG Gill" and 2 less rebounds, and what looks to be a better 2nd point guard option than Castro already in Lewis that played his high school career playing with one of the top 3 players in the country. Littleson, Steele, and Jackson at the 2 option off the bench. James, Mike, Abrahamson, Jackson at the three. Sanders, Robinson, Mike, Abrahamson at the 4. Lewis and Robinson at the 5.

This isn't about "how it turns out", it was a statement of fact. If you can't see this team has more overall talent and depth than it has had in years, I don't know what to tell you. Doesn't mean we're gauranteed Ferry won't be Ferry, doesn't mean were guaranteed to win more next year than last. We have more bodies that can step in and contribute, the guys that were here last year will improve to some degree, and almost all the newcomers (transfers and freshman) besides Lewis will most likely be able to contribute in some way. Smith is more talented than DC, Abrahamson and Gill are probably about a push, Blackman probably won't be as good all around as Mason but he'll contribute offensively for sure, everyone that stayed will have a year to develop their game and their bodies. Yes, we absolutely have more talent and depth.

Now I have a challenge for you. Instead of just sitting there shooting down my opinions which is very easy to do, why don't you offer one of your own on the topic? Like because you don't see it that way, who are going to be the big dissapointments for you next year? Who are they players that will be stuck to the bench all season? Who won't be able to contribute next year? I'd rather hear that than come on, you're wrong.

Re: Another Scholarship Opening?

I don't think it's had depth in four years. Depth is when you can go 10 deep into the roster and the talent level is consistent. Not guys playing 38 minutes.

Like I said, let's see it translate to the court before we make bawdy declarations.

So we had Depth 5 years ago? Let me present you with that roster:

Andre Marhold, PJ Torres, Eric Evans, Danny Herrera, Jerry Jones, TJ, Kadeem Pantophlet, Mike Talley, BJ Monteiro, Sean Johnson, Martins Abele, Mamadou Datt, Derrick Martin.

Hmmm, your right, there was so much depth on that team, 8 guys transferred, with 5 never playing D1 again, one switching sports. Wow what a squad that was, the new guys coming in have nothing on that group. I hate to pick on you but when you post you sound 1. ignorant and 2. Hating Ferry so much you can't have a legitimate conversation about basketball.
