Sorry I Can't Let This Go

Just received by 22 page homage to CD on his 15 years at Duquesne. Of those 22 pages the athletics accomplishments are confined to 1/2 of page 17. The $10 million that was credited as being invested in facilities I believe doesn't take into consideration that a percentage of that was private donations. Over $400 million went into campus enhancements and expansion. So athletics should be over joyed to receive .025% increase and have it partially funded by private donations. What a joke.

Who says we're not committed to big-time basketball?

Why does this shock you? The higher ups don't care about sports. They didn't care back when we were a big time program. The old SI article by Myron Cope proves that. We only won back then because we had great coaches, and a solid local talent base. When those two things were removed, we sank to a level that reflects our support.

They also didn't care in the late 50's when Duquesne was a premier basketball power. Dudey Moore, after compiling a 191-70 record and a NIT championship/de facto national championship, resigned as head coach of Duquesne. Why?  It was widely reported that Duquesne was reducing scholarships and de-emphasizing athletics. Dudey, a Pittsburgh and Duquesne guy who played for Chick Davies, took the head coaching job at La Salle.

That's the era I was talking about when I say big time program. We were good under Manning, but we were elite under Davies and Moore.  Chick Davies, the greatest coach Duquesne ever had, left in his 40s to take a high school job. No more need be said.

Re: Sorry I Can't Let This Go

It's ironic that the feathers in the proverbial cap related to men's basketball weren't good enough to keep the coach who delivered them employed.

Don't need feathers. We have bricks.

He said, facetiously.

What feathers? Every coach who won big at Duquesne left while in his prime.

I was referring to the accomplishments of the men's basketball program under Dr. Daugherty that are listed in the propaganda booklet I received this week. He is being credited for accomplishments that he himself deemed insufficient. I think that's ironic--among other descriptions.

I didn't get a book. I feel deprived. Left out. Ignored. Shunned.
