Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

Wouldn't be shocked to see a big step taken by him next year. I know he didn't get alot of time last year, but that kid seemed to make every three point shot he took when he was in, he has a really nice stroke. He also made good decisions with the ball, didn't look super confident, but another year of experience and an offseason playing in a high level tournament like this should definitely do him well. Looking forward to what he can bring to the table next year.

Not to sound negative but I thought his shot was a little awkward. I would guess that as he gets older and stronger it would improve. Think of it, 18 year old kid in Ferry's system where the expectation is shoot first, make decisions later. Sounds appealing until you're facing D1 defenders.

I tried to find some video from Duquesne, I guess he didn't play enough for them to make a highlight reel like they did for other guys. Here's from pre-Duquesne. Form looked the same his freshman year as it did in this video. Don't see anything awkward at all. What don't you like about it El D? I know you're not in town but seeing him play when he did all last year in person I thought the form was pretty good. He kinda does this weird thing where he puts one foot in front of the other sometimes but other than that has a pretty decent stroke. If anyone has an awkward shot it's James in my opinion.

I'd go as far to say that Steel has pretty good form. Watch:

Let's hope he makes that team and gets some valuable playing time under his belt.

Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

El D, I hate to say it but you do sound negative on this one. Just checked the stats and besides Powell going 2-3 on the year, Steel led the team in 3 pt FG% shooting 15-29 51.7%. To put it in perspective Mason shot 42.3%. I know he took a lot more shots, but that's still pretty damn impressive for Steel. Especially when you consider the fact that alot of those shots were from coming off the bench cold.

Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

I'm not saying he's a bad shooter, I just thought the form looked a little off. One of the best shooters we ever had, BB Flenory, took two handed chest shots and his feet never seemed to leave the floor.

That's why I said the post wasn't meant to sound negative.

Well what do you think from the video? Looks pretty standard to me

Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

We had better hope that one or both JS or "Q" can contribute mightily to next year's cause. We will need it!

Didn't watch the video. Watched enough games last year. Like I said it's not an insult. As he gets older and stronger and works on his shot he should be OK. Peace.

Saw many games at Arena when the BB would stand on the baseline, 5 ft away from the hoop doing multiple head fakes and scoring, with his feet on the court. Every now and then Ref. Vince Jacobs would call a travel and we would be screaming, "Hey Vince, His feet never left the ground!!"

Josh Steel averaged 12 ppg in three exhibition games for the GB under 20 team.

His stroke is fine, he can shoot and has enough size to get his shot off.  His biggest challenge is to improve his handle.  His playing time will depend on his ball handling.

Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

Thanks for the research, CLK. Looks like he is starting and getting some sizable minutes (20+ per game).

levon1975, good observation on his handle. He is not comfortable in putting the ball on the floor; he would much prefer hanging around the perimeter as a spot shooter.

So it looks like Josh is a scratch for the UPMC summer league team. My plans for tomorrow are to take in the first halves of South Hills Audi vs. Duca and UPMC vs CDW and the second halves of System One vs HBS and Shale vs PBC. Anyone else planning on being there?

I will be there Ken. Personally, I will most likely do the same to catch a half of both of the first two games. I want to see the first half of Tarin Smith and the second half of Littleson and Blackmon. For the second game however I will be planted at Shale Land vs. PBC, which will be featuring Abrahamson and Castro vs Eric James and Isiaha Mike. Want to see Mike and Abrahamson for the first time and any improvement from Castro and James.

The other 8 oclocker has Marqy Marq Jackson vs Sanders and Mike Lewis II, more guys I expect to have less of an impact on the season this year.

By doing it this way I'll see 4 of the 5 new guys and Mike Lewis will probably not have much of an impact this year so I'm good with that.

The dual sport guy isn't on a roster, my bet is he doesn't step on the floor next year unless we're up 30 against some bums in the early OOC.

Re: JOSH STEEL NAMED IN INITIAL GB U20 MEN’S SQUAD

Also is this the same setup as two years ago where the gyms are right next to each other? I'm guessing the sports complex is that main gym but is the "intermediate" location on the campus as well?

El D,

Once BB was down low doing his multiple head fakes and scores on a big forward, Gene Steratore Sr. calls steps and waves off the score.

Me and my buddy start screaming at Gene, Hey Gene he didnt walk, his feet never left the ground!

And honest to God, the Beeb hardly ever jumped his 3 inch veriticles not withstanding, he was a great one.
