An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

Saw this on the Pitt Board from the guy who runs the Summer League:

** Some folks have been wondering about the Summer ProAm, and it’s my pleasure to provide this update!

** Before getting into what might happen, please remember that I’m using the phrase “might.”

** At this moment, nothing has been determined. But again, at this moment, there is a positive vibe that could make it happen!

** Here’s the twist. If it happens, the event would most likely look much different, and that could be a very good and exciting thing.

** As most of my Lair brethren know, in the past, the event took place over a five week span. If the event happens this year, it could be much shorter. And this could be a great thing!

** Conversations are taking place that could start the event this year just after the 4th of July Holiday, with only a week for pool play, followed the next week with Championship play.

** What could make this so much better is that with such a short time frame, it could require stronger commitments from all participants, and even participation from WVU players and/or more “pros” or local players. In other words, iffy commitments from players won’t be needed this time.

** And because of the sort time frame, it could be easier to gain commitments from a better pool of players.

** Another idea being tossed around would be an evening proceeding the event to include events including introductions of players and teams, following by such things as a slam dunk and three point shooting contest.

** Finally, there could even be some type of a public event surrounding the draft of the teams for the event. In the past, this draft was done completely in the dark.

** I think it’s also important to add that folks from Stallings’ staff have been included in the conversations, and they have been very receptive to this new idea. It would seem that thoughts from some involved in the past may not have been completely thrilled with the overall length of the event. But this shorter event might work out well for everyone.

** So my message to all is to keep your calendars clear from July 7th to July 20th for what could be a new and exciting ProAm event.

** I’ll let everyone know more when more has been solidified. Keep your fingers crossed and stay tuned!! 1 DT_PITT, Saturday at 11:51 PM

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

Last summer didn't Jamie Dixon decide at the last minute not to permit Pitt players to participate in the Pro-Am Summer League?  This move on Dixon's part ultimately caused the cancellation of the 2015 summer league and understandably roused the anger of the league's organizers.

Thanks CLK. Let's hope that it happens, if for nothing else, something to discuss during basketball downtime and something to get our hopes up!

I always thought the "pro" in "pro-am" was for the Pitt players. Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

It might be under Stallings. I know you hate Pitt, but Dixon was probably the cleanest coach they've had since Doc Carlson. A good guy, and they will soon regret the day that their complaining convinced him to leave.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

I don't really care if the league returns or not.  It's just pick-up basketball, run by pitt fans, for pitt players.  The other guys were just props to give pitt players someone to play.  It was all about pitt.

I agree my friend.  The guy who runs the Pro Am is a Pitt grad, so naturally there is a lot of Pitt showcasing, but that is no reason to not let our guys compete against ACC and Big 12 players.  I could list several reasons why this is a good thing but I am sure that except for a few they are self evident.

. The guy DT Pitt does a recap after every game, and while he understandingly concentrates on Pitt guys, he always mentions it when a Duke plays a good game.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

Totally off topic but pretty cool. I live in the Southside still and me and the old lady decided to go get some Paige's Dairy Mart at about 9 p.m. yesterday. Pull up and park and saw Darius Lewis standing in line! Talked to him briefly, he said the grad transfers worked out during their visits and looked really good. Also good to hear he said both guys got along with the team really well. Thought it was a cool little nugget worth mentioning.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

We have to overcome our fear of Pitt. Beating their butts should be an objective every year. I don't remember Bruce Atkins, John Moore, BB, etc., ever backing down from the Panthers, and beginning with Sam Clancy, they always put a tough and good team on the floor. Now we look whipped before the ball's in the air, and we certainly sound whipped on the board sometimes.

I doubt that it's fear, they've just been vastly more talented than us over the last 15 years. The teams were pretty much equal back when Atkins and Clancy played. Now it's our 2 star A10 players, vs their 4 star ACC players. We will need to become an NCAA at large type team to really be able to compete with them on a consistent basis.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

The Summer League starts next Wednesday.  All comments and observations are welcomed on this board by those who attend.  I understand they are looking for volunteers to help with things like stats and score keeping and so on. If you are local and interested you can contact them on the link below.  Also, the teams and rosters should be announced this week.  If you see them please post.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

West Virginia still not participating. That sucks. Between not playing us and pitt in basketball anymore and pitt in football, and now the summer league it seems like they are intentionally cutting ties with their neighbors to the northwest. Wonder why.

WVU doesn't play Pitt because Pitt doesn't want to play them because of the behavior of the fans down in Morgantown. WVU fans have gained a very bad reputation for abusing traveling fans, and throwing stuff at coaches, and players of the opposing team. With the Dukes, it may just be a case of them not wanting to play a return game. If I remember correctly, didn't they lose the last time we played them here?

3 seasons ago at WVU. Ovie had 19 and dominated, Mason had 18 and we lost 96-83. That was our last game against WVU. We did beat them at CONSOL the year before when the team ended up going 8-22

Please read carefully. The question was "didn't they lose the last time we played them here?" I didn't ask when was the last time we played them.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

Huggins is never playing us again as long as he is coach. I don't think I need to elaborate on why. The Pitt / WVU battle is much deeper. WVU was totally abandoned by their BE buddies and although they are traveling considerable distances feel like they either got equal or better league affiliation than Pitt.

WVU would kill to be in the ACC. They were able to beat out Louisville for the B12 spot, but they would have been better off losing. Had UL gotten that spot, WVU would have almost certainly been able to take Maryland's place in the ACC. Every school in the old BE, including the C5, was looking out for themselves, and I can't blame them one bit.

Re: An Update on the Summer Pro-Am (Summer League)

Don't really care one way or the other but I think to everyone's surprise WVU come out of this far better off than many expected. Other than the logistics, which BTW they have done a lot of creative things to get around I suspect financially they are much better off. Consider football is king and I'd buy a ticket to see Texas, Oklahoma, TCU etc. before seeing any of the ACC offerings. IMHO.
