Tonight's Games

Game 1 - South Hills Audi vs DUCA. Audi had Jordan Robinson, Tarin Smith and Billy Clarke. We watched the first half. Jordan Robinson is light years ahead of last year. He is much quicker on both ends of the court. He had two post-up moves on offense. Didn't score but successfully muscled his way into the circle both times. He had 3 dunks and two layups that I counted. At least 3 boards on defense. Tarin Smith is very quick. Successfully penetrated several times but failed to finish. I counted 0 for 7 including a couple of bunnies and several uncontested 3s. I hopes it's just rust. Billy Clarke was Billy Clarke. You could see the result of serious coaching. Cross-over dribbles, at least 3 3's. Brought back memories!Game 2 - Moved to the Intermediate Gym. Saw most of the second half of System One and HBS. System One had Spencer Littleson. HBS was supposed to have Darius Lewis and Emile Blackmon. Lewis was a no show. We couldn't identify Blackmon. It's frustrating. The printout does not have the player's game numbers so it's a guessing game. In any case, Littleson played like a first year freshman. He rarely saw the ball. When he did get the ball on the perimeter he mis-fired on a couple of 3's. Can't really make any sort of analysis from this.Game 3 - Intermediate Gym. Watched entire first half of Shale Attorneys and PBC. Shale had Abraham and Castro. Abraham took a couple of 3's and mis-fired. He had several opportunities to drive to the hoop but either passed the ball out or was forced away from the basket by the defender. Did have a couple of boards. Now as for Mr. Castro, I counted 4 drives to the hoop and finish plus a 3. 11 points in the first half. LOL. He played the point. Now for the great news. PBC had Isiah Mike and Eric James. James hit a 3 but mostly was facilitating, had several assists. Mike is the real deal. He drove past Abraham for a layup. Hit a 3. Had at least 4 boards and two other drives for layups. Played the point for several extended periods (Magic Johnson, maybe?). He does need to add muscle but he is a player.
So from my perspective, at least, excellent for Robinson, great for Castro and Isaih Mike, good for Smith, fair for James and Abraham, not much to go on for Littleson.  Had to leave so didn't see the Mike Lewis, Nakye Sanders in action.

Re: Tonight's Games

Fill in from a untrained eye: If J. Robinson doesn't get more playing time, it's a crime.  He really looked good.  T. Smith looked ok until the end of the game, when he just took over (steal, shooting, etc) Too bad B. Clarke couldn't play this year.  His skill level was way up, but he was also definitely the floor leader.  M. Lewis looked very good, but the man tonight was Nakye Sanders!  He stood toe to toe with Pitt's giant, R. Nix.  That guy is beyond big, football is where he should be!  But Sanders had that warrior mind set, for my money he was the best player all night, including Pitt's M. Young.  And I can't figure R. Castro out.  During the season he looks so hesitant, but in these games he looked pretty smooth, although I only viewed him for a short time.  RMU's Brandon Burke looked pretty good too.

Re: Tonight's Games

I've been saying all offseason that Sanders is a big key to this season. Now that Ferry himself has described Abrahamson as a wing player, I think Lewis and Sanders (with Robinson and Mike off the bench) should get the 5/4 minutes. Abrahamson and James split the three (with Jackson). Smith will be the point with Lewis backing him. That leaves a nice spirited contest for the two (Blackman, Steele, Castro, maybe even James).

Re: Tonight's Games

Only watched one half of Jordan and Tarin's game and then to the other gym.   I will make only one observation until the summer "season" is over.  Isaiah  Mike will play wherever and whenever he wants.  He is the real deal. He is a complete package. Blackmon had classes and Darius Lewis is nursing a bad foot right now.  KenOTR73's and Prince's synopsis are accurate as to Jordan and Tarin.

Our new post gazette basketball writer seemed to indicate that Tarin got much better as the game went on. Hopefully he's able to knock off the rust a lot quicker than Castro. Speaking of Castro, I think he is someone to keep an eye on this year. Let's hope he puts it all together

Re: Tonight's Games

Saw some stats: Castro lead all Dukes with 23, James & Mike had 20, Robinson 17, walk on Kellon Taylor 17, and Abrahamson had 16.

Re: Tonight's Games

Great reporting guys, Love to hear about Isiah Mike. I watched that top Canadian summit and he does look legit. Hopefully Tarin Smith gets right back into being that explosive player he was when he left Nebraska. Pleasantly surprised to hear about Jrobs quickness......I also don't think we are going to like Abraham come years end.

Disagree on abrahamson. He seems to be an instant offense guy. There will be games when he is stroking it from deep. On games when he's not, there are plenty of other options at the wing. IMO, it's always great to have a guy on your team who can really shoot it and score in bunches.

That's good news regarding Tarin. As I said, I only saw the first half. In any case, I've been searching for a word to describe Castro. The best I can come up with is nonchalant. That's what I see on his face and in his demeanor. Nonchalant. Now, I am a huge Laker fan and whenever I watched Kobe over the years (and this applies to Michael Jordan as well) the words that used to pop into my head were obliterate, assassin, killer, death stare. I don't believe I ever thought nonchalant. Someone needs to light a fire under this kid. He seems to have a high level of talent but the spark isn't there. Here's hoping the coaching staff is up to the challenge. We need him to contribute this year.

Re: Tonight's Games

Someday, some coach will again toss Mr Castro the keys, ala RE and Ajax.  After all, this is a physical Guard unlike many in DU memory. Coach Stevens saw it at Butler while his coaching replacement did not.  It may not happen on the bluff either but one thing both Coach Ferry and Coach Stevens have in common, they see in Mr Castro a man among boys.

Re: Tonight's Games

Castro was wasted last year. Of course, I'll get ripped for saying this, but neither Colter nor Mason was a good fit for him as a backcourt mate. Smith is more of an athlete, so he and Castro might work well together.

Re: Tonight's Games

I really don't like Castro at all and I think he is getting away with robbery by going to school for free buuuuuuuuuuuuut if he somehow does turn it around and we truly have a former Butler guard and a former Nebraska guard in our back-court I am starting to like our chances more and more next year. I am labeling him as our X-factor this year.

Re: Tonight's Games

Monday 7/11/16 Pro-AmForget about the "star" ratings, if Mike is listed as 2 star.  He's gonna be awesome with a little experience. I think he could play the 2 guard, he is a real talent.   T. Smith looked good, but Lewis is going to give him a run.  All the Duquesne players played well.  I know this is summer league, but from what I saw, the talent is definitely there!  Didn't see much from Littelson, but I left that game early.  Robinson looked tough again, and James and Mike were really tough.  The Jeter/Johnson team looked like the Globetrotters tonight, shake and bake and the rim had a magnet on it, they couldn't miss.  Abrahamson started a little slow, but heated up with threes when the game was a blow-out.  And maybe Brad Stephenson ought to work with Castro.  He is so smooth in the summer league, but when the season comes around, he plays like he is in a potato sack.  Maybe Ferry needs to give him a green light against one of the so called cupcakes (do they exist?) this season to see what he can do.  The kid really is talented!

Re: Tonight's Games

The guy who covers the games over on the Pitt board says Jordan Robinson looks much better than he did in his first summer league 2 years ago. Always like hearing praise from someone with no dog in the fight.
