Which would you rather see?

Option 1: Blackman (20 ppg) and Abrahamson (18 ppg) play 38 minutes a night, along with Smith, with Lewis/Robinson/Sanders/Mike splitting 20 minutes and James/Castro/Steele splitting 20 minutes, with the Dukes winning 22 games and getting to the NCAAs this year BUT having to take a step back next year in terms of experience.

Option 2: A developmental approach to PT where Ferry experiments with different lineup combinations, with the Dukes winning 17 games and getting to a lesser tournament this year BUT with rising players poised to ascend to the top of the conference next season and the year after that.

Yes, yes, there are a million other options in between, but my question is do you want immediate satisfaction followed by a step back or progress followed by longer term success?

Re: Which would you rather see?

If we had made the tournament during this millennium, I might be inclined to take option 2, but seeing as we haven't seen the tournament since I was a teenager, it's option 1 all the way.

Re: Which would you rather see?

Give me option 1 for two reasons:

1. As stated above, it would be a huge party on the bluff. This is what we've been craving for decades. This would put Duquesne basketball back on the map in terms of visibility in this city. People would start following the team again that did not even go to the university, and people would start following the team again that did go to the university. Alumni would again begin contributing to the basketball fund which could be used to grow the program in a number of ways. Local media coverage of the team would increase greatly. I can't tell you how much I would love to be able to turn on 93.7 the fan and have Duquesne basketball be a regularly discussed topic for as much as I listen. Currently, we hear about Duquesne only at the beggininning of the year, the week of the Pitt game, or if we get off to a decent start in non conference. Increased media coverage leads to increased attendance. I would sacrifice taking a step back the next year if we even would. As a recent NCAA team, the quality of our recruits would also greatly increase. We're pumped to get these 3 star guys now, imagine if that was the standard with a couple 4 star top 150 recruits peppered into the mix. Success breeds success. Look at VCU, FGCU's, and Butler's meteoric rise to national college basketball relevance based off their recent past success.

2. Improvement next year guarantees none of the above. Getting to the tourney means so much more to a school than just playing in a game or two if we could shock someone. It changes the entire identity and visibility of the program both locally and nationally.

Re: Which would you rather see?

Option 1.  The men's team needs to show significant improvement this year!  It should strive to obtain the success that the women's basketball team has had for the last eight years.

Re: Which would you rather see?

Option 1.You never know if your option 2 players are going to be around the next year. Past practice says some won't be.

Re: Which would you rather see?

I'd also take the first option. I just want to win, I just want to see this program make the NCAA Tournament. We'll work on next year after March.

Re: Which would you rather see?

Being able to make the "1977" albatross disappear is very significant to me - first option, for sure.

I'm moving Duquesne University to Southern California where they are building, at no cost to me, a new campus and arena?

Re: Which would you rather see?

Thought about this a bit, and after reading the comments that have been posted, it now seems most important to get there ASAP.  Breaking the no-appearance skein would be great for us long-term fans as well as for the program.

I don't think we need 38 minutes from our grad transfers though.  This team might be able to win 22 and still get significant game time for the younger players..

1 is only option, option two may never come, ask the Buccos for that is their future.

Re: Which would you rather see?

The Dukes and Coach Ferry need to win every game they can this year. NOW! Next year will have to take care of itself. I'm for whatever option that is!!

Re: Which would you rather see?

Option 1 -  What if the world came to an end after the 2017 Season?? -  (In scenario 2 - just because you have a decent amount of kids back from a decent season - doesn't mean they would do the same in 2018)  Option 1 could help recruiting down the line (even though next year's class is probably full - no way of knowing if some bench players leave freeing schollies up)

NEW DU SLOGAN -  COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE??  Doubt Al (Up in HEAVEN would mind

Re: Which would you rather see?

I think Ferry knows he needs to win this season and move up in the League.  I have no doubt that he will continue to play primarily what he believes are his best players.  I also believe, however, there is no need to play any player to the point of exhaustion as we saw too many times last season.  Arguably Ferry has more depth and talent this year than he ever had at DU, including young talent.  As Brian Batko pointed out I-Mike might challenge for the starting PF position day one.  I think Mike Lewis is good enough to steal some relief minutes at the point, and don't count out Spenser Littleson making a contribution this season.  Check out the comment below:

Rashad Phillips ‏ Second live scrimmage today for Duquesne freshman Spencer Littleson scores 20pts hitting 5 three pointers. The freshman continues to impress.

Re: Which would you rather see?

I wouldn't care if they cheated and had NCAA violations down the road if the cheating resulted in a tourney berth this year.

I'd rather see the program shut down before I'd stoop to that level.

Re: Which would you rather see?

Word on the street is Rene is looking really nice in practice. We should have a lot of players ready to step on the court for us.
