Worthen is disturbing since most A-10 teams have a player or players that can drive to the hole with authority, and we may have no defensive answer to that.

This may be going way back, but in the days when we pounded RMU with ease, a local kid who I do not think was even recruited came into Palumbo and drove and dunked on our forward. We lost that game and 6-8 Ricky Cannon embarrassed 6-7 Kevin Price and put up well over twenty plus and got a ton of boards.

With all the young players and newcomers plus our strong and quick forwards transferred out, this could get ugly.

Wonder how that game in Rupp Arena is going to look on National TV.
.

Great memory Phil. Price was a pretty decent scorer but on D, not so much. Of course, I don't believe that Scott Edgar was interested in coaching D. I'm not so sure that Scott Edgar was interested in coaching. Price, James and Bosnic. 9 wins. Uh-huh.

I remember rick Cannon. I believe he originally went to a MAC school, and then transferred to Bobby Mo. Jarrett had great success with local guys returning home. Like Ferry, Edgar was another coach who thought running and gunning would lead us to the promised land. Defense is always a better bet to win games, but the fans tend to complain about boring ball.

Re: Exhibition Game

I will be happy to win 40-38 than to lose 110-108, boredom not withstanding.

Re: Exhibition Game

When Calipari coached UMess, he took great delight in running up the score against Duquesne. I would expect nothing less here. It will look like a midnight madness event.

Re: Exhibition Game

I don't doubt there were some blowout games when UMASS was on their high; but I recall a great game at the Palumbo when the Dukes took on UMASS and I recall a score of something like 100-92.  I believe UMASS may have been ranked #! that year, at least at some point in the season.  I'm sure some of you guys were also at the game and can fill in some of the gaps in my memory.

When Caliperi's UMass team came into Palumbo in Jan 1995 as the #1 team in the country, they blew out the Dukes 103-53. This was the worst loss in 52 years for the Dukes. It turned out to be John Carroll's last season here. I'm a little hazy on this next part, but I seem to recall that President John Murray made a rare appearance at this game with an entourage; he was so embarrassed that he left Palumbo at the beginning of the second half. From that point forward, Carroll was done since no contract extension was going to be forthcoming.

Re: Exhibition Game

Levon1975, when UMass came back in 1996 again as the #1 team, the Dukes lost 93-89 in Scott Edgar's first season. Marcus Canby didn't play, and the game was not as close as the final score would indicate.

I left at halftime, at about the 5 min mark in 1st half Cal had his third stringers in, and they were running our kids off the court. They just seemed to quit.

I left in disgust and didn't return for the rest of the year.

Re: Exhibition Game

I really do not "get" that this staff cannot add a defensive specialist who would simply coach defense. If, in fact, this has already been done, well I wouldn't know what to say!!

That was a different game.  I know we played the close one of those times.

Not sure if that's what ferry does with his coaches either. I do know that's how Dan Burt does it...he's a got an offensive and defensive coordinator

Re: Exhibition Game

In my experience, there is often one assistant coach whose specialty is defense and others who coach various aspects of the game. With Coach Rhodes we have a really good big man coach. Dan Burt seems to leave much of the bench coaching to his assistants much like a head football coach who more or less oversees the overall effort though I could be oversimplifying this a bit. My question is who is mostly responsible for the defense on this men's team and why?

Re: Exhibition Game

Regardless of who coaches the defense, Ferry is responsible the same as any head coach.

Ferry coached in a lesser conference where the overall talent is less than the A10.  Ferry only needed minimal defense because the NEC teams don't have the shooting skills. Not so in the A10.  Ferry is over his head coaching in the A10.

Only one problem with your analysis, 2 years ago we got beat by the same types of teams Ferry smoked in the NEC. Bobby Mo, St. Francis, NJIT, UMES. None of those teams come close to A10 level. Hell, we just lost to a D2 team. If what you say is true, we should blow through the ooc schedule, before hitting a wall in A10 play. Last year is the only time we've really done that.
