This is a must win for Ferry.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

They used up their two non conference mulligans that I was giving them, and it will be unlikely they finish .500 if they need a third. And a losing record will get Ferry a one way ticket out of coaching. Agreed, duq81, a must win for Ferry.

Betting line has the Dukes favored by 5.5 points.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

I'd say this is pretty close to a must-win. The only way this team will improve is if they gain confidence, and the only way to gain confidence is to win. We are two late collapses away from sitting at 4-2 and feeling decent about ourselves.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Duquesne will win today without a problem.  In spite of their coach, these kids don't want to lose to another school that they actually have a chance of beating. It is getting embarrassing and pride will take over.

Pride doesn't override bad foul shooting.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Wow that was hard to watch. Bad free throw shooting and shooting in general. The good news is that we are in front despite playing relatively poorly. The defense has been solid though, not giving up many easy looks.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

On the rare occasion of seeing JRob in there, we see post moves that neither Lewis nor Sanders can execute.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Wow! That's all I can say. Dueling 18-0 runs. It looked like we would crack again under the pressure but the difference was Castro. Rene's ability to beat the press won them this game. Hopefully this will give them some much needed confidence. On another note, there were some phantom calls on I. Mike today.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Winning without your best player scoring or hardly playing is a step forward. J Rob looked like a Man out there in his 7 min. of P T.

Mel Blounts' kid looked good out there at times......

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

i cannot believe they won that game. there was a turnover and a quick layup or something that brought the lead down to 13, and my buddy and I turned to each other and said "we're going to lose this game".

zach weiss tweeted out when the outlook was darkest "Why would anyone do anything but press Duquesne?" It's been a couple games now where the Dukes are up, the second the press comes on it all goes to hell. and it doesn't matter who is on the floor, nobody has been able to handle it.

Totally agree. Handling pressure is by far this team's biggest weakness. We criticize the coaching often, and rightfully so, but at some point the players have to show some ability to remain calm and collected under pressure. I thought Castro, with his change of speed dribble, showed more poise than anyone else, smith included.

It's coaching.

Or lack thereof.

On the post game radio, Ferry said something like...  in spite of what I hear the fans saying in the stands, we work on handling pressure every day in practice. Blah, blah, blah.  Then whatever he is teaching/coaching, they ain't getting. As much as he tries to deflect blame on his players, the light bulb doesn't go on that it reflects 100% on his coaching ability.

No one-win team is going to get the best of us. What a horse-crap team and program.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Dear Mr. Ferry and Mr. Harper,
The idea that you can actually hear people talking in the stands during a Division I basketball game is all that needs to be said on where you have this program.

It might show a little class if we'd at least give the AD a couple of seasons before we start attacking him. Ferry is a different story.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

81, your on the money!  Harper was dealt this hand and believed he had a D1 coach. I believe like the rest of us he has drawn conclusions and there isn't much that can be done right now. Ferry is delusional in his assessments, if that is preparation against the press what is none?  His substitution patterns make you crazy, I.Mike picked up his 2nd foul at about the 15 minute mark in the first half. Inexplicably he put him in at 3:34 and at 3:33 he was on the bench with his 3rd. The fourth came early enough in the 2nd half that it lead to that rarest of sites J Rob. He has a very nice 6-7 minute stint and gives the team a couple of nice buckets and instant offense. When he returns after a 5 minute break he takes a shot that obviously Ferry didn't like and after 1 minute he hits the pine. This is the start of the 18-0 run by Cleveland State.  After watching Ferry coach I had no idea there where ANY bad shots!!!!  He watches air ball 3's, on average 20+ turnovers per game and his team get out hustled and beat on the boards and he takes offense to a single missed shot. BTW I.Mike reappeared with a 1:06 left in the game??????

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

Dave Harper was hired and his coach has a big contract, so he backs him and even pays to get him in a post season tourney.

But I have met this man and can't imagine he isn't counting the days when he can bring in a coach that can teach and lead his players to success. For now he is stuck with this turd and has a rough season ahead of him. Can you imagine trying to rally supporters to believe that improve will finally come?

I wish him well but think this season will be a stinker.

Dear All,
My comment was not an "attack."  It was a statement on the sad state of affairs of the program after five years of a new coach.  Just more food for thought.

I don't think anyone saw it that way. Much as I like duq81 and his posts, he sometimes quotes the wrong person when he makes a statement. A few folk have indeed started to equate Mr. Harper with our lack of success and those are the ones to which duq81 is referring.

Why mention the AD in your statement? He hasn't been here long enough to be able to do much. The school is never going to eat 3 years of a contract, nor would they have fired Ferry after he reached .500 last year. He may be able to pull the plug after this season. Maybe. The board is not going to want to eat two years of Ferry's contract, but they might if the wheels really fall off. If the season finishes around .500, Gormley, and the board probably won't ok a firing. March of 2018 will be the point where Harper will truly be in control of the coaching situation. If he makes a bad decision then, then he is fair game.

I'll say this much; the Dukes have two more games this week. If they win both, this board will be a far different place Friday night. Not holding my breath, but just saying.

Re: Game Thread - Cleveland State

duq81 - I appreciate your passion for the team as we all have that.  I just wanted to say that I wasn't blaming him...again, pointing out a sad fact about the program.

I said in a post a while back I am good with going to the NIT every 3 or 4 years which is sad that I would be satisfied with that.  As far as the board being different when they win this week, I will BELIEVE when they end up in the top half of the A-10 which means they will win at least half of those games in their league.
