Game Thread - Pitt

Wouldn't it be hilarious if this is the year we knock off Pitt?

No, it wouldn't.

It would certainly cool down ferry's seat in the short term, that's for sure.

In the short term, it absolutely would. It wouldn't cure our long term deficiencies, but it would drive interest for a little while given the fact that we haven't beaten them in nearly 20 years.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

This is a coach who LOST a exhibition game to a D2 school and has subsequently lost 2 out of 3 buy out games. Unless Stallings clears his bench early this could easily reach the Kentucky margin. We have been unable to penetrate any zone defense yet alone one with Pitt's length and athleticism. Since I've written this game off I'd be more concerned about RMU's zone and losing to them which I believe we will since we have never solved their zone either and IMHO, they are a bad team this year. Taking the half empty view how hot will that seat be then?

Dome, let's be clear, I totally agree with you. The most frustrating part of ferry's time here has been his inability to react to any look or defense other than man to man. My point was if he were somehow to pull off an upset against Pitt it would relieve some pressure. I think he needs a high profile win and at least 14 total wins to keep his job. I have my doubts based on what I've seen so far.

Dome

I understand your point but when I go to public events that feature the coaches or, for example, a public event that featured Ferry as the new coach when he was hired and the first freaking question from alums is something like  "Can you beat Pitt" I realize that some people don't get it - that's all they want.  Just like many Pitt fans only want to see Pitt play and beat PSU in football too many of our fans think that's enough or at least have that first on their list.

Would only cool his seat if he followed it up by running the table ooc. Then we might begin to think that maybe he has a clue.

Heard Kevin Stallings on the radio this morning. He said the Dukes are "well coached". I nearly wrecked my car.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

I like others am not as deranged over this game since...I gave up my tix for this year until we get a coach or Nit bid,  we dont have a chance to win, and sadly, the more games we lose the more of a Chance of this being Ferrys last year.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

Line opens at 13 1/2. I don't know how the lines on some of our games have been set this year but this to me looks like the lock of the century.

One of my fellow long time suffering season ticket holders offered me 34 1/2 on the Pitt game last night, but I didn't take it.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

7pm tip Friday at PPG Paints Arena. Per KenPom:
Dukes #222 (3-5) vs Pitt #45 (6-1)
Pitt is ranked 11th of 15 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Game prediction: Pitt by 13, 81-68 - Dukes with a 12% probability of a win.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

These comments are sad to me, once this was the highlight of both teams season. Folks showed up at the Civic Arena for this game, filled with passion and the players scraped and battled throughout the evening.

Then Dr Roy Chipman came and with someone's check book brought in Demetrius Gore, Jerome Lane and Charles Smith and they insulted the Duquesne team in the press as Rinky Dinks, a low level win to be played on their schedule. Then they blew out the overmatched Dukes, year after year.

And looking back that trio of Panthers were correct, truly they made a visionary statement.

That being said, I'm going to the game, with my bosses husband, who is a Pitt fan.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

Just remember. The last time we beat Pitt? Darelle Porter was the coach. The reason we beat them? We had six men on the court but their very talented point guard, a freshman at the time whose name I can't remember, missed the free throw to tie it. Aaron Lovelace was the star of the game. The time before that? Jim Satalin was the coach. Sean Kelley had the only double-double of his career and was the star. We could have beat them with Saunders and Clarke and a 17 point half-time lead but E. Evans dribbled off his knee on one possession and threw a pass to no one on another to clinch the loss in OT. This begets my question. Why the f..*&%k do we even play them? It makes no sense. Must be for the money?

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

One of my close friends is a Pitt grad and works at UPMC as a doctor.  He told me that the Red N Blue Crew wrote all sorts of messages near the Pete in chalk to spice up the rivalry (Pitt sucks, etc...) and I know that Pitt did the same to Palumbo and the statue we have on Forbes.  That said, as someone who started the R&B Crew, I wouldn't even bother this year.  Our team is so embarrassing (as is the student section) that they shouldn't even be quarreling with the Zoo IMO.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

Also, apparently the R&B Crew drew a bunch of phallic images and wrote swear words everywhere.  I know they are college students, but that isn't very mature, especially when it is close to a hospital where lots of people work.

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

i haven't even been suffering for very long, but me mentally...if they somehow miraculously won this game, it'll be like it would correct a lot of wrong they've done and will continue to do.

It's a get-out-of-jail free card waiting for Ferry

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

Unless Seth Curry and Labron have a DU uniform on tonight there is no way we win.  Ferry on the Fan this morning gets asked a softball question about it must be "tough with young team/new starters" and he went after that question like a deer to a salt stick!  Same old bull and get ready for more after we get pummeled.  Hope Harper has already put out his feelers.

That's the one that broke my back. Led the entire game including two overtime periods, except for the last 12 seconds or so.  I gave up any hope of ever pulling that upset. Well until last year, when it looked like we had the best chance and then Mason and Colter start flinging bricks and before the first half is even half done, we are down 30 like every year!

Re: Game Thread - Pitt

Off topic, but I noticed that the former RMU player Worthem never played another minute for Mansfield after they beat us. He still is listed on their roster, but no other mention of any kind. Just curious if there was any explanation in the PGH. area for this?

Actually, Scott Edgar also beat Pitt during his last year. Actually, the last 4 times we beat Pitt, the coach was fired at the end of the season (Rice, Satalin, Edgar, Porter). A win tonight will seal Ferry's fate!!!

Thinking about that fact, there are so many fans who put such importance on winning this game, I wonder if the fact that Ron never beat Pitt was a factor in souring some of the posters who turned against him.
