Offline This team is not going to have any sustained success until they become more consistent offensively. Right now, there is no go-to player on offense. The three point and free throw shooting is below average. This year's team is a real anomaly from the past jim ferry teams. There seems to be real improvement on defense, but the offense is anemic right now. Offline I happened to sit three rows behind the RMU bench last evening and every time the Dukes bench would call out a play, the RMU bench would do the same call. They knew everything the Dukes were doing. That makes offensive execution much more difficult. It also puts a burden on the coach to change things up. Opponents scout very well. RMU was jumping the sets, especially in the second half. So, more turnovers. If coach teaches a few different sets, then the offense may have less difficulties. Offline 2012 many of us would ask just what is Ferry's offense but I think your point is well taken. That is the reason I could not believe the win total predictions and expectations. Last year 45% of the teams scoring came from Mason & Colter. That isn't happening anytime soon with this rotation of guards. Other than Blackman, Smith and MLewis, where is scoring going to come from? Your best inside threat sits on the bench(JRob), your next best inside threat (IMike) takes 49% of his shots from 3, your best 3 point shooter arguably (Steel) is in limbo and even though I think Sanders is a warrior on the boards he isn't a scorer. This team is also even exceeding last years team for turning the ball over and isn't rebounding as well. Finally a fact that CLK touched on the overall basketball IQ,low obviously, and I'll add selfishness is a huge problem. I think a lot of the high win predictions (including mine) were based heavily on the talent of this team, which I still believe is strong enough to win 20+ games in a season. Outside of the pathetic "weave to nowhere" there pretty much are no set plays. Everything is is freelance very few passes into the the post. There is way too much dribbling and very little actual ball movement. A decent high school coach would have this team at worst 8-2 right now. Ferry is completely incompetent. This was never in greater contrast than watching UMBC first year coach running multiple defenses and slicing the Dukes defense with precision set plays. I am sick of hearing Ferry's perennial excuses for his failures. Ferry has to go! I really do not care if players leave because he is fired. I am convinced if Ferry were to stay to keep those players he would stunt their development and he would still field a losing team. Offline CLK you summed it up beautifully. Offline Just because a bad team like RMU only scored 64 pts on us and a Pitt team without its most important player scored only 55, I still believe this defense is not much better. They still fail to recognize the opponent's top scorers, RMU had two players that beat us; Still and the little guard. The winning basket was a good example of what seems to happen to this defense at some point in every game. It breaks down and allows the opponent to drive the ball from the wing or top of the key all the way to the basket and score. Two glaring issues are that our guards are bigger than last year, but apparently not very quick, because in every game I've seen they cannot stay between their man and the basket. The second issue is a lack of recognition by the rest of the team to step in and stop the penetration before the player gets to the basket. Still took those long and fairly slow paths to the hoop, but nobody cut him off, of doubled him to stop the ball penetration. The little guard Karon ____ just beat them to the lane all night and on most occasions nobody stepped in the block his shot or stop penetration. The thing that is even more confusing is that the weak side players often do drop into the lane so far that they allow easy kick out passes for open 3's; so if they are sagging into the lane from the weak side, why aren't they stopping the penetration before its too late? It just doesn't add up. Offline 102 I'm with you on the talent that makes it harder to accept and I totally agree with your assessment on the competition. It will be interesting to see what George Mason does tonight when they visit Happy Valley. Levon, I'm with you on the defense and in regard to JRob and his supposed lack of defensive responsibility like last night his fouls come from helping with a driver to the hoop.

What I didn't consider which I'm sure others didn't either, was the lack of coaching or bad coaching that we have seen the last 4 years carrying over to this one.
Surely a glaring oversight, I guess i blame it on my inner optimist that I expected anything would be different.
When you have a team that it is very clear to see is much more talented than every team it has lost to (save uk and psu, which honestly we are close to talent wise), it reveals an absolutely glaring deficiency in coaching.
I've never loved Ferry, but in previous years I have preached patience and gave him the benefit of the doubt because of lack of talent. This year, I truly believe this is the most talented Duquesne team I have personally seen, and they could go on to have one of the worst records I've seen. For me, this is the reason the jury is no longer out on Ferry. He's clueless and this program is going nowhere with him at the helm.
Fire the con man. He should be recruiting for a big school, and literally have no other responsibilities related to the program because that is all he can do. What good is talent when you have no one to direct, develop, or make in game adjustments to win games with it?
The selfishness you referenced really showed last nights. Tons of drives to the basket and fast break opportunities last night where if an easy layoff pass was made it would have resulted in an easy two instead of a block or heavily contested missed layup. For me, that was one of the biggest factors in the loss last night. Again, the coach should notice that and make that adjustment in game.
