Another Small Time Jim Classic

Pulling a STJ quote from Matt Welch's game story on DK Pittsburgh Sports http://dkpittsburghsports.com/2016/12/19/dukes-find-answers-74-62-win-jackson-state/ :

"Every game is a journey, especially when you’re young,” Ferry said. “Every game is a story, and every game is going to be like that… We schedule toward RPI. The teams we’ve played are all pretty good teams. We made our non-conference more difficult, maybe too difficult for the team we have.”

Too difficult???  According to KenPom, the Dukes have played the #335th toughest schedule out of 351 teams. Maybe he should have scheduled more Mansfields, errr oops.

Re: Another Small Time Jim Classic

I don't understand how he got through an interview to get the job.

Lewis, Abrahamson and Blackman are seniors. Smith, Castro, James, and Robinson are juniors. Sanders and Steele are sophomores. 28 years of college basketball experience there. The schedule except for Kentucky and Pitt is weaker than the beer on dollar draught night.

A couple days ago he admits to not actually coaching the team.

There's an excuse for everything. But year 5 into his program building, no likely chance of finishing over .500.

Jesus...I really think all signs show that ferry is leaving at the end of the year.
Yes I do believe this team will get better as the season goes along, but I really do not think they will put it together in time,
My biggest fear and only fear when it comes to duquesne is how the change of coaching will affect the minds of Littleson, Mike, Lewis, Wheeler, Walker, Banks, and Djonkam.

Re: Another Small Time Jim Classic

Maybe he believes You can Fool Some of the People ALL the time..  or ALL the People Some of the Time  Hopefully the Athletic Director - can see through the charade and make an HONEST judgement about the future.

IF the team somehow does well throughout the Atlantic 10 season then maybe Coach Ferry should be retained - - but I wouldn't get TOO excited beating a team (CCS) who proceeded to lose to Yale by 40 a couple of days later and by beating a team (JS) coming off a loss to an NAIA school.--  I also hope Mr. Harper looks at his ENTIRE body of work --  Not just this year.

Now about Colgate -  They are a GREAT GREAT GREAT TEAM WITH SOME GREAT GREAT GREAT PLAYERS AND A GREAT GREAT GREAT COACH --  We'll have to REALLY bring our A GAME if we expect to be competetive let alone win .....and we may be a little flat after two emotional victories .... and ........

Re: Another Small Time Jim Classic

When you read the quotes from Phoenix's post above, you wonder how anyone could try to get away with saying that stuff. It's beyond inaccurate or misleading. I think "pathological" would be a fitting term.

When will an interviewer challenge some of these ludicrous statements?

When ED says "I don't understand how he got through an interview" it sort of makes my point that there was not and probably will not be a lot of people really interested in taking this job.  Unless there is some super commitment from the school administration - and I mean super - or  unless there is some coach out there that is damaged looking to get back into it and try to rebuild his rep - like Rice not Nee (and I'm not advocating here) - who would want this job?

There will always be people interested, the problem is, while there is never a sure thing, the candidates that are a better bet are likely to figure that they have better options. This leaves you with a pool of candidates that have many question marks. Retreads are always available, but these guys are retreads for a reason. You're not going to get young assistants from any top program to come here. Nor will you get a rising coach from a true mid level league. This leaves you low major coaches, older assistants who have been passed over for head coaching jobs, retreads, and coaches who have done well at the low major, and D2 levels.  Of course we know that among the low level head coaches, there are a handful of guys who will become household names over the next 10-15 years. The question is; how on earth do you identify them? What do you look for when you're trying to see if the magic they've shown at a low level will translate to the A10?  We all know that John Chaney won a National Championship at the D2 level, and became an elite coach at Temple, but the list of failures is longer than the list of successes.
