Offline Norm really should have been the first Duke. Si Green, Ricketts bros, Somerset, etc. were all independents. Yes, legendary Dukes but not legendary A10. Offline Norman played in the struggling Eastern 8, an attempt to get a place in the NCAA's because of the decline of the NIT and the conference driven NCAA Tournament.

The once power center of college basketball, the Independants, we're getting shut out with automatic bids to far inferior schools. So joining a conference was survival.
I was so lucky to have seen Slick play for four years, I still remember a Post - Gazette pre season article with just a little mention , it went like this, " They are saying over at Duquesne that incoming freshman " Stormin Norman Nixon may be one of their best ever, we will see."
And we did.......
