Offline How about the announcers mention Hurley and Ferry hired same time? What makes it worse is that Hurley has hardly been the success everyone expected. URI fans are starting to grumble. His seat isn't warm yet, but if he fails to make the NCAAs this year, someone will start looking for some matches, and legitimately so. Now consider how far ahead of Ferry he is. I hope Harper is doing his homework with regard to who is out there. It won't be someone obvious, because those guys won't come here. Instead of being able to get a guy who's dominating the MAAC, or an assistant from a Michigan St., we might have to try to identify a promising assistant, such as for example, a guy who might be on Ed Cooley's staff at Providence, where a dead program has been brought back to life. An assistant at a place like that is not going to get a P5 job without moving up first, so they might be willing to come here. Hate to root against the Dukes, but these are the results we need. My views exactly. If Ferry even sniffs .500 he probably gets another year. Now the key is will MIke and Lewis and the rest of the young core stay or bail and we are back to square 1 again? It's kind of like when Nee got canned. He tried to leverage Hernol Hall into an extension, but the season was so bad, he couldn't survive it thank goodness. We need for that to happen again. Offline it was announced today that josh steel has transferred out of duquesne Offline And with that, we get younger. Waiting to hear how he sucked anyway, etc. Offline And with that, we get younger. Waiting to hear how he sucked anyway, etc. Him leaving is good. Another brick in the road out of town for Ferry. Offline I hear what you're saying duq81. And I hope you're right. But what I fear is that next year is going to be about having lost three key seniors (Lewis, Abrahamson and Blackman) PLUS XX unexpected transfers, and how we're starting young with so many unproven players ... which will translate into the four guard three point shooting fest ... which will lead to another sub-.500 season ... with players CONTINUOUSLY getting thrown under the bus. Offline They got out-hustled and out-worked from the opening tip. Embarrassing. It was hard to watch again yesterday. Leaving early has become the norm at these games. URI was a much better team, with size and skill. They were well-prepared to attack the many weaknesses of the Dukes, and just killed us on the glass. What I found more disturbing was the lack of fundamentals on the part of the Dukes, in particular failure to box out, and failure to follow the "you-man-ball" concept on defense. The Dukes are not getting better at these simple concepts. I lost count of how many teams have run the same "give and go play on the Dukes for easy layups. It's one of the simplest and most basic plays in the game yet after 20 games the Dukes can't defend it. This stems from the lack of awareness on the part of the players in keeping an eye on man and ball at all times. I'm sure it's been taught, yet they seem oblivious each time they see the play. We didn't need him because we had signed the great Eric Evans, a player that Tom Izzo had stupidly passed on. Offline Chase and Evans were both Everhart guys; but you can't put EE in the same class as Chase; ERIC was a productive player for Ron. Offline Chase and Evans were both Everhart guys; but you can't put EE in the same class as Chase; ERIC was a productive player for Ron. I know Evans was better than Chase, but to hear guys before he got here, he was going to be Norm Nixon, while AJax was some bum. It just ticked me off, because I was always impressed with Aaron's play, even during the 3-24 Nee disaster. Had the coaches had a little more faith in him instead of always trying to replace him, we might have gotten the high level AJax a year earlier. If that AJax had been on the Shawn James team, we might not be having these discussions now. Offline I hear what you're saying duq81. And I hope you're right. Offline fjhrun...thank you for your observations - they are well written and you obviously have watched them this year and understand their weaknesses/strengths. However, please, most of us have gone to the games and we do support Duquesne but their basketball program is a mess and has been for at least 5 years. Just go back and read. Will firing Ferry be a solution? Let me put it this way and I am not saying this with disrespect or in anger. We have seen that keeping him is NOT the solution. I could go on but just go back and read what many posters have written- whether they stopped going to the games - again, not to be a jerk, but we stopped giving money and going because of the program but do care - DO WATCH them on line - and WILL RETURN WHEN the University makes a serious effort to hire an effective coach. This isn't about one game, it is about a program hurt tremendously by the previous AD in what he did and who he hired. Again, just go back and read all of the specifics. I am glad you go to the games and I am glad you are rooting for them - we are to - but giving money and attending the games did not work - their attendance will continue to dwindle now and if the AD doesn't understand this - then they haven't even hit rock bottom yet. Last edited by FAM (1/22/2017 9:33 pm) Offline I think of Duquesne now in the same way I used to think about LaSalle and Fordam, losing programs that never seemed to get better.

Did Amodio ever actually watch this man in action before he hired him?
Smalltime Jim. 12 teams ahead of us, Jimmy. There are greener pastures in Quinnipiac and you know your friend Greg will break the bank for you.

Boxing out was so bad; even on foul shots, URI players always seemed to beat the Dukes to the spot; even though the non shooting team is given inside position, it was seldom retained. At one point three Dukes stood by and watched the URI FT shooter miss the shot and walk right down the lane and get his own miss! Even more embarrassing was the fact that the shooter was the only URI player in the paint! They had dropped everyone else back to defend.
The only bright spot in the second half was the hustle and play of Eric James and Kellen Taylor, both guys came in and really competed, got a few steals and showed some fight. I saw little of that in the others. This brings up the issue of Eric James and his lack of PT. I felt from the beginning that ERIC showed enough last season to be an important leader and veteran performer for this team. He got off to a slow start without his running mates from last year, Micah and D.C.; but in my opinion Ferry made a huge mistake in not letting him play through his early struggles and hopefully provide some toughness to the young guys. Like a kid at Christmas Ferry only wanted to play his new toys and forgot about the older one. The problem with that concept is that you never develop veteran leaders on the floor. We saw the same thing with Dez Ridenour, who is now getting good minutes on a Kent State team that would beat Duquesne by 20-30 points; run off your veterans so you are always young!

At the time he was signed most people might have been thinking the same way about Eric James as they are about these kids!! Remember THEN there was some speculation/trepidation etc that we might "lose him despite the verbal" NOW "Coach" has SO Much confidence in him that a FRESHMAN FOOTBALL PLAYER who is a WALK-ON gets in before he in his THIRD year on the hoops scholarship. If you go WAY back -- I'll bet most fans would have been just as high on Chase Robinson (two times All State etc from Alabama --( wound up playing behind Jason Duty) (walk on) before Chase Transferred as they were on Aaron Jackson (maybe our BEST player in last 20 years - he wasn't THAT highly regarded after coming out of Prep School) -- So do we have 3 "Aarons" in the group 3 "Chases" in the group -- or something in between -- But I'm NOT going to be thinking - THESE guys along with Mike & Lewis WILL be a necleus - if we're patient -- THAT should not be a factor when considering the coaching options down the road. When he signed (way at the end of the summer) Mike James seemed to be "almost an afterthouhgt" -- He turned out pretty well didn't he??

Re: Rhode Island Game Day
I get your point though that recruits can be deceiving, in that they all sound good until they get on campus; then you see all their weaknesses., if a new coach comes in he usually wants a few scholarships at his disposal; so it can be attractive if you have some roster flexibility.

Nope. No mistake. That's what they will become in Smalltime Jim's talking points next year.

Re: Rhode Island Game Day
However, they did show flashes of improvements some years just as Duquesne did with the previous coach.
If I look at it objectively, Duquesne is one of those laughing stock programs that never seem to progress.
The recruits we think are so promising are but mediocre players in D-1, ineffective against above average to great college teams.
Better coaching would help, better talent ( why would they come here ) would help more.
