Another quote from Coach:
“It smacked us in the face when we got here, the lack of work ethic, the lack of desire to succeed, and all the cultural pieces have to be in place just to have a chance to win. Forget about talent. You can’t do any of that business until you’ve fixed the behavior and attitudes. That’s something that is a battle here that we’re fighting every day.”

That's interesting, and it seems like a knock on RE. But some coaches, and from what we've seen, Ferry is one of them, feel that to win you have to run a very tight ship. And that the key to winning is the players having the supreme desire to win, more so than reliance on talent and smart execution. It could be that Ferry would find the same lackings in just about any team he might have taken over from a previous coach.

Re: Rhode Island

Some folks got riled up when Ferry called the players out, not me.   This is supposed to major college sports and these kids should be held accountable.   I can buy that most of the time a coach should not call out his players however clearly these players (especially the seniors) had lost their focus.    I'm sure JF hated to do it but felt it was a last resort.   I've been a season ticket holder for 10 years and these games have been painful to watch not because of the coaches because you can see some players mailed it in for sure.   I only go because my kids like the cheerleaders and the music I simply could not stand to watch these kids go through the motions on the court.    I for one am glad JF called them out...it worked and the players have responded.

On another note, certaily Colter has talent however i have concerns on his long-term ability to run the point.   Point guards on winning teams will have a 3:1 turnover to assist ratio.    He's got 121 assists to 84 turnovers.    I'll give him a pass this year because he is a freshman and this team does not have inside options so that does limit him.    BUT, he's got to work the ball better the rest of this year.   I hope JF recognizes this because I don't care how many points Coler gets this team will never win if Duquesne does not have a point guard that can protect the ball and pass the ball.    If next year Colter is averaging 18 points/game and an A-10 2nd team player it means nothing if his turnover to assist ratio is out of whack and the Dukes are losing 18 games.

Given what happened - the transfer of players, the firing of Ron, the negative PR about the firing, etc., it would not be surprising if the morale of the players was pretty low. This does not necessarily reflect on Ron - just maybe more on the state of the program in general.

Re: Rhode Island

Guys...
I was just being a bit of an ass.
The recent quote above is from Coach Dan Hurley.  If Jim Ferry said the same thing, some would choose to rip him.

Re: Rhode Island

I think the turnaround of Marhold is proof and his statements in P-G, he had two great games last two, now   Sean Johnson has to do the same. As far as our point guard, he was a scorer in high school and needs to have better players to pass to so he can scale it back. Also we need a point about 6-3 tall maybe next years recruits will bring one and Binney  may adjust to D-1 speed of game and surprise.

Re: Rhode Island

Does anyone else think Sean is just going through the motions and has checked out?  Dissapointing loss.  Missed free throws killed us.

It seems like we've been horrible from the line forever. When was the last season that we shot 70% from the line?

This was supposed to be his year, but he wasn't up to it. He's probably disappointed in the way things have gone. He's shooting under 37% from the floor. If he had played the way many thought he could, this would have been a very different season. AJax, Clark, and BJ stepped up big their senior seasons. Not so with Sean.

Re: Rhode Island

Just back from the game,  I think it is a bit unfair to say Sean Johnson has quit.  He has always played hard in the years he has been here.  He does a lot of little things that don't show up in the box scores.  He will mix it up inside better than some of the Duke's bigger players.  Both he and Colter are the only two that take the ball inside (Marhold too, lately).  Thats why their percentages are a bit down, they go into the land of the giants when no one else will.  Without a doubt, Johnson plays hard, and lately he been a bit frustrated on the way things have been going.  He's taken a couple of cheap flagrant fouls underneath, and he needs to discontinue that practice.  But to say he's not trying is really unfair.  And tonight, Marhold was all heart.  I really feel bad for a guy that plays out of position for so long.  Of course his shooting is suspect always, but he has really, really played his heart out lately.  The Dukes are just a  couple players away from turning it around (I hope).  Tonight was a really good game from both teams, unfortunately we lost.  P.S.  Winters really needs to work on his ball handling and decision making before he becomes a force that I believe he can be.

Re: Rhode Island

Good to see Bobby Hurley. That was worth the price of admission.
Chris Rock and Jerry Jones are the same person.
Pep band gets an A. Keyboardist gets an A+.
Loved the pregame lights out line up announcement.
7 student red and blue crew.
Ladies BB team came and sat on their hands the whole game.
Andre would make great plays then flash a look at Ferry as in 'how-ya-like-me-know'?
Amodio and gang trying hard to make it a festive environment.
40 college kids were eating at the Red Ring at tip-off. All men. No interest apparently in the game one block away.

Re: Rhode Island

Were there 40 students total at the game tonight?

Re: Rhode Island

There were 40 at the restaurant that never went to the game. But there were at least 40-50 other Duq students sprinkled in pockets around the arena. Made me think that they are unwilling to make fools of themselves in the end zone student sections because there is a 66% chance we'll lose any given night. It is easier to trash talk when a program has a 90% chance of winning at home like the Pitt Zoo experiences.

Probably Tricco's first season. I think that was the last good FT shooting team we had.

As for Sean, he had a few hustle plays last night but by and large he looked like a man defeated. He didn't try to get involved much on offense.

2008 - 73.7%
2007 - 74.4% (RE's first year)
2006 - 73.1% (Nee's last year - % helped us get to 3 wins)
2005 - 76.4% The Duquesne All Time Season Record (McAllister, Osimani, Achara, Bluemling, etc.)
