4. Ferry also said in his postgame interview that he was encouraged that his "young team" has finally started to gel and play the right way. Dude, Ferry, how do you not realize the fact that you have a young team is a direct reflection of your poor recruiting record and record level of attrition, your basically calling yourself out. After Ferry gets fired he should look at a job in politics cause that guy can spin with the best of them. I don't claim to think I'm any smarter than Dave Harper or Gormley and those guys have to see it just like we do.

Hey Jim. if this is true, then we should be on a six game winning streak going into the A10 Tournament. The remaining schedule is fairly soft. Show us something that we haven't seen in five years. I won't be holding my breath.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

If this massive renovation is true where will they play for a year?    I can't imagine them paying for the men and women to play all games at PPG.  Women will get hosed probably being forced to play double headers before the men.

Didn't DU play someone in Texas a few years ago in a high school gym cause their arena was being redone?

Maybe Pitt will let them play some games at the Field House.

Ugh! I'd rather make a deal with a local high school or two than play at Pitt.  Better games would be at PPG and others at one of the nicer High School facilities in the area.  It would also be a good way to attract some new fans.

Fitzgerald was actually the Dukes home court from the time the Duquesne Gardens was razed in 1956, until we moved to the Arena in the early 60s. The Gardens was closed and razed without warning, leaving the Dukes with no place to play. Pitt was actually kind enough to allow us to use their then nearly new facility. Duquesne may have had to drop their program had this offer not been made.

Yes, and it was one of my fondest moments of watching Duquesne Hoops ever.  I wrote about it on the old VOY board.
It was November 2008 and the Dukes were in Houston to play Rice (ironically one of two major schools with a longer Dance Drought than us) and Autry Court was being renovated. The game was moved 30 miles west along I 10 to the Merrill Center, which is the facility for Katy ISD, who happens to be my employer.  It was a Saturday night in November and not many people really felt like watching two bad NCAA teams, let alone Rice students driving 30 miles out of Houston.

I went with a co worker of mine, also a DU grad, who played on one of the championship football teams around the turn of the century.  It was ten bucks to sit anywhere, and there weren't one hundred people in this facility, counting Cheerleaders and coaches.  No kidding.

Chris and I sat right behind the Dukes bench and it was great.  You don't realize how much crowd noise there is, even in a small crowd, well this microscopic crowd was almost silent. The ball bounces echoed like it was practice.  I found it interesting, you could hear the players call out the plays and the defenses, you could hear the refs speak to the scorer for the fouls  (Push off, white 55). We even listened in to Everhart's huddles! That was cool! Coach Gary even came over to talk to us during warmups and thanked us for our support.  My favorite moment was at a point late in the game, Ron looked up directly at Chris and I and said, with a smile, "They're playing defense like a bunch of p***ies!"

It was  a fun night.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

If they close Palumbo even for a year or two, they not only have to move all the men's games, but also the women's team, the volleyball team, and presumably all of their practices on top of that.

that would be a lot for PPG Paints to take on.

on top of that, my source claimed to know nothing about anything that was being presented here. now, that might mean that my source was just out of the loop or purposefully not telling the story to prevent leaks, but i'm no longer expecting this to happen. and i probably won't expect palumbo to be renovated until i physically see the announcement being made.

I hate myself for loving you. Quoting me without the expressed written consent of the National Hockey League is prohibited.

I knew it was probably too good to be true.   While I don't don't doubt there were probably some pie in the sky plans, that takes Board and Holy Ghost fathers approvals.     And we all know how those things turn out in the end.

Where to practice would be the most difficult thing. The Dukes would play at the Arena, that's the easiest part to figure out. What facilities exist at the other colleges in town? Point Park, CCAC? Money talks, and they, along with Fitz, might be available enough dates to cover the volleyball, and most of the women's games, with some double headers to cover the rest. As for practice, the former Knoxville Jr. High is sitting empty about 15 minutes from Duquesne. I went to school there, and it has a nice, regulation size gym, and the school board still maintains the building. There are also 3 gyms run by the city Parks and Recreation Dept. within 15 minutes of campus. SS Market House, Warrington Rec Center in Mt Washington, and West Penn on Polish Hill. Volleyball could probably be played at any of these as well.

See, that wasn't very hard was it?

They would probably practice on one of the power center courts. I also think that volleyball would play their games at the power center. They could get some temporary bleachers in there.

Several sources I believe to be reliable have indicated that the renovation plan for Palumbo is true. May not be much change in seating capacity, but substantial dollars are involved. Not much more can be said at this time.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

This may be a dumb question but why spend substantial dollars and wind up with a gym with the same capacity.   Doesn't that seem a tad bit silly?

Why not wait until the official announcement from Duquesne on the renovations and improvements planned for the Palumbo and other athletic facilities before forming a negative critique?

I guess they really don't have an alternative. They don't have the money to build a new arena, so I imagine the idea is for Palumbo to be small, but fairly plush. This is what both GW, and St. Joe's did. If improvement in our play warrants it, games of high interest will be played at the Arena.

Re: More DU Hoops Coverage on 93.7 the Fan

I agree levon, there are some nicer gyms around, and they are big enough for what the Dukes are drawing these days.  Play a handful at PPG.  What does CMU have?
Even go as far to schedule more road games when the joint is being renovated, then when the AJP redo is complete, have more home games due to said scheduling.
