Re: George Washington Game Thread

Al,
Tarin, does need work on his 3-point shot and to his credit he hasn't been taking many lately; usually he'll only take one when the shot clock is running down and he has no choice.  His mid-range jump shot is a better option for him right now, and he should continue to take that shot when it presents itself, and he is very good going to the hoop as are the other guards.  Our guards just punished them going to the hoop yesterday.  They couldn't stop it! Tarin will get better, and will continue to contribute.  I would like to see all of the guards get better at finishing through contact.  Our guards are taking some contact on their drives and not getting calls; but they need to be more determined to finish the shot through contact, and not expect a foul, but if it comes; get the "and one".

Officiating in the college game is so bad right now, they are obsessed with enforcing their "points of emphasis" on arm bars and such that they are missing obvious shooting fouls, traveling calls, etc.  The backup center with the beard for GW had a habit of traveling while trying to make his moves in the paint.  He literally switched his pivot foot after establishing it twice, all three refs missed it both times.  How about the 3 pointer that dude tried?  It went about 15 feet before hitting the floor!  Literally the worst shot attempt I have ever seen!!

As for your comment on the "new coach", I don't see a coaching change coming after the season.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

Hmmm, no new coach, eh? Let's see, if we can do some hypothetical math. Yesterday was the biggest crowd of the year at Palumbo. (1746). On a whole, let's say we have averaged 1000 per game. New coach brings excitement and let's say attendance rises to 2000 per game. At say 20 bucks a ticket on average for 15 home games, that is $300,000. That is half the salary there.  Plus, add in revenues from parking and concessions. Do real marketing around the new coach. Power up the fund raising. Put in the University Strategic Plan that basketball will be a top fifty program every year. A new coach is not so far fetched economically as we might think. This coach is in over his head. Nice guys who don't know how to succeed finish last. Keep him and the bottom line dollar wise goes down. New coach = chance at economic renewal.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

Let's focus on the roster and new recruits for a second, because the only logical argument for keeping Ferry for anther year is that he will win next year and turn the Program around.  I would think that after watching him for 5 years that all but his ardent apologists will agree that he can not teach, motivate, or develop his players, and his game day coaching is horrible.  So what will change next year if Ferry stays? We lose Blackman, Darius, and Abrahamson.  Blackman scoring will need to be replaced and we will need a big man to replace Darius.  What we have coming in is Wheeler, who in my opinion is a legit point guard, and two projects.  There is also one scholarship left and looking at who Ferry is recruiting it looks like his wants a SG.  I honestly do not see where we will be significantly better next year to have a wining season. A freshman point guard, and two kids that will take two years to develop before they become legit A10 players will not move the needle. Ferry will have to still have to find a big man difference maker with his last ship but regrettably it looks like he is going in a different direction.

Now ask yourself if you were the AD that was about to launch a $40MM fund raising campaign would you want to ride the Ferry horse? Some of the more optimistic here may view the future differently than me, bu if it were me if Ferry craps out the season I would dump him.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

Fully agree, CLK. The starting line-up next year based on Ferry's history is Smith, Castro, Lewis, Sanders and Mike. As you state so well, more of the same. New president, relatively new AD means they should build the program their way.

This goes back to those three last minute losses early in the season when his end game instructions were "play hard." Now these kids have no concept of how to win a close game. With Colter, Ferry used to tell the kid to run the ball up court and look for the open guy. Each time, Derrick ran up court and heaved. A couple he made, a couple he didn't. I'm guessing he gave Lewis the same instructions. Problem was, there was enough time on the clock to set up a good shot, he heaves something off balance.

This is not about being a freshman. It's about not being coached properly.

Like I said, if you bring Ferry back then can his assistants and force him to hire coaches with basketball experience.

Better still, let's get a better head coach.

So Colter "ran up Court" and "heaved threes"  Tarin's percentages are 37.7% from the field (worse than ALL the others who have tried enough shots to make this a comparison)  19.1% from 3 point range (far worse than the other  guards - WAY worse than Colter & Micah) -- 64.5% from the line --  better than only Sanders among those with a decent amount of playing time -  ANY good coach would want the ball OUT of his hands -  or basically tell him - you're going to be a Clayton Adams type - you can handle the ball but ONLY shoot lay ups - Free Throws, 2 Pointers, 3 Pointers - ARE THERE ANY OTHER KIND OS SHOTS??  Of course there was his off season video - when he leaped completely over a bystander and dunked the ball (How many times has he done THAT during the season??)

Am FOR a new Coach --  Only players I would DEFINITELY want back are Mike and Lewis -  Castro/J Rob/James are in the "wouldn't blame you if you DID leave category due to the fact that they might want/get more playing time in what would be their last year.

Castro and Robinson can't leave unless they graduate, since both already sat out a year.

You ARE Correct on This Point -  I mentioned "playing time in their last year"  Should they chose to transfer to a Division 2 School - They would be eligible immediately - AND probably see a good deal more playing time -  And in Castro's case that would involve a "switch" from being a 2nd Guard etc to being 'The Man" -  Can the three play on the Division 1 Level - YES - but are probably NOT going to see that many more minutes regardless of where they may wind up.  This is their LAST chance to do this.

While I was critical of Smith's numbers - THIS was the logic in NOT mentioning Him, Saunders, and Littleson at the bottom of the post when I mentioned staying/leaving.

I don't see how you (collective) could watch this game and blame coaching for the loss. GW is a veteran team with a senior in Cavanaugh who is an All A-10 first teamer, forced the Dukes to double him at times leaving some others open for shots. The hit some long threes and despite them sizzling from three the Dukes never let them pull away and stayed close all the way. The Dukes just squandered too many excellent opportunities to get a lead, missed dunks, missed layups, poor decision on an open court situation. That is why they lost, players have to make plays! I think every player who played would admit that they just made too many mistakes to beat this team today; yet it was a good competitive game and if you are at all impartial, you must see the improvement in this team. Do they need more talent and size; absolutely, but the team is getting better.

Al, my friend, I was talking about Ferry's end of game strategy. And that's exactly what it was.

They will also have the scholarship vacated when Josh Steele left school.  If he made an offer to Banks before Steele left, I would assume he now has two left.  They definitely need a shooter to open up the defenses when they pack the lane to it off our lanes to the hoop.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

Good point Levon I forgot about the Steele scholarship.  So some have made the argument that Ferry should return because they believe things will turn around next year, because the team will be better.  I guess that is the $600,000 question.  While I would like to believe that, I just don't have any confidence that even with IMike and Lewis returning that things will change next year and the Program will turn around. Regrettably I see another losing season, because we will still be really weak at the 1, 4, and 5 slots.  In my opinion IMike should be a 3.  Smith (to be kind) is not the answer at the point, but since Wheeler will be a freshman it will take a year or two for for him to reach his potential at PG.  Walker is skinny as a rail, and in my opinion over rated.  Where do you play him?  Until he bulks up will get killed as a PF.  The other guy is a project. Ferry has shown no ability to develop his players, so unless Ferry can substantially shore up the 1 & 5 with the remaining scholarships I do not see things changing.  What happens then if Ferry craps the bed again next season, and the fan base continues to dwindle?  Does DU buy again the argument that we are young and he needs more time?  Hard questions.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

I agree that there is little evidence to show that Ferry is a competent bench coach. Maybe keep one more year to secure the incoming class and then pull the plug if another losing season ensues. Really a difficult situation on the one hand with the potential loss of  recruits but on the other hand maybe not so much This is year 5 with 60 wins. Check the records to see what the previous coach did in 5. A remarkable difference!

Re: George Washington Game Thread

Regarding I-MIke, on the offensive end, he is a 3. The defensive end is the conundrum. He can't guard a 3 because he doesn't move his feet - a fundamental mess. He's not strong enough to guard a 4 or 5. If you want to play man to man, you better work his butt off in the summer on defensive drills.

Or, if you had a coach who knew how to coach defense, you would have been playing zone with this personnel group. I-Mike could be perfect at the top of a 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 defense.

Re: George Washington Game Thread

"He told me I was going to take some bumps and learn a lot by myself." That's a quote from M. Lewis in DK Pittsburgh Sports today.

"Learn a lot by myself."

Yeah, there's your next level coach right there.
