Current recruits

Steve, could you answer my questions. How is Jack doing at Penn State, and how good is Watkins going to be in D1 Basketball, since he is still in High School. My point to this whole recruiting thing is, and I have said it in the past. No coach knows how at high school player is going to perform, until he gets to college. To many un-known's. Can he handle the academics, freedom from mom & dad, girls, D1 competition, not playing in his first year, playing in his first year, and realizing this is a whole other level of athletes, etc, etc... It kills me that there is over 6,000 reads of this thread, and its all about the unknown.

However, in knowing how bad this programs current state is, nobody, except for a minority, wants to talk, or read about it, or suggest how to make it better.

Re: Current recruits

I was referring to the, "new recruiting name" thread, with over 6,000 reads not this thread.

Re: Current recruits

Recruiting is the name of the game. Yeah, you can't be sure how a recruit is going to turn out, but if you are consistently getting 3 star recruits, you should be successful at this level. It's just like first round draft picks in football. Plenty do fail, but the first round produces stars at a much higher rate than the other rounds do. You may be frustrated by this season, but recruiting will determine whether there will be more like it.

Re: Current recruits

Scotch,

I'll answer your question with a few blog entries I've done. No sense in rewritting what I've already written.

First is my methods on how to figure out where you stand with the limited information available to us on recruits.

http://yukudukes.blogspot.com/2012/01/flawed-means-of-evaluating-basketball.html

Second is how I evaluate players against lesser or less formal compeition.

http://yukudukes.blogspot.com/2012/10/what-can-you-learn-from-scrimmages-and.html

Finally, my evaluation of Jack. I think that for this conversation the most relevant portion begins with the Outlook heading.

http://yukudukes.blogspot.com/2012/03/scouting-report-on-donovan-jack.html

Totally agree that there are "non-basketball" factors that enter into play, but Isaiah Watkins has been away from home for a couple of years now. Same would go for Duane Notice.

IMO, if Ferry duplicates the kind of players he got in the class of 2012 in 2013, we're in pretty good shape.

Re: Current recruits

Thanks Steve, but its a simple question, and answer.
Q. How good will Watkins be in D1 BB.
A. No one knows until the games are played.

Re: Current recruits

Absolutely right Scotch, nobody should make the mistake of judging a recruit before we see him play a game.  Given the track record of the current staff in bringing in the guys with such a small window last year; I am encouraged that they can improve on that with a full season to work on recruiting.  Still it takes at least two years to work on recruits in order to get in early on kids that you like.  We were still getting in relatively late in this years class.

In the most absolute sense, this is true. You can be certain until they play the game.

However, if there weren't clues about how a player might play at the college level, Eastern Michigan would have as much of a chance of putting a talented team on the floor as Duke. While they are not perfect, you can learn a lot about players from watching film. Of course, you can't learn everything, but recruiting isn't as simply as you present it.

What I've seen from Watkins that I think is fair to assess against high schools kids is that he is quick for a guy who is 6'8''. He jumps well and moves in transition.  I could see that he plays the game hard. I could tell that he's most comfortable in the post offensively and that he prefers to finish recieivng the ball rather creating his own shot. I could tell he is comfortable defending the perimeter as well as the post. I could tell he was not a selfish player and that he could find the open player rather than forcing a shot.

I also can tell that a lot of college coaches think he could play at the next level based on his offer sheets. If Ferry is wrong about him, so were 30 + coaches.

When I look at all those factors, I feel pretty comfortable thinking he can play at the next level. Am I certain? No, but I feel better about him than a lot of other prospects I've seen, Jack included.

Ain't that the truth. We lost a hell of a guard, BJ Flynn because he "missed his girlfriend back home" and transferred. Another one of those great "what ifs" of the Carroll years.
