Perspective from a fellow DU alum and a basketball coach

This says it all:

"The most basic fundamentals of basketball (free throws/inbounding the ball correctly/boxing out a guy when you have two guys in front of him to do it/….it was possibly the worst end of game execution I’ve ever seen at the collegiate level.  Disgusting."

That does sum it up perfectly.

What some have said on Twitter:

Chris Barrett:‏  Duquesne heartbreak last night that was pathetic

Blake $tover:‏   The Ferry Era at Duquesne ends at a last second shot

Colin White‏:   bring back the glory days of Ron Everhart... *sigh* being a #Duquesne fan sucks

Paul E. Schwartz‏:  Dick one has to be concerned with Jim Ferry of Duquesne! Blowing double digit lead and losing in last second essentially @ home

Josh Taylor‏:  If you're a Duquesne fan & you don't feel the knife twisting while reading this, you probably didn't have a soul to save, anyway.

Trey Daerr‏  Is it time for Chico Harlan to write another epic article to facilitate change with Duquesne Hoops?

Josh Taylor‏   Any other college hoops fan: "OMG OUR TEAM IS SO TERRIBLE" Duquesne fans: "Hold my beer..."

Josh Taylor‏   If anyone needs me I'll be cutting Duquesne highlights and then taking red hot pokers to my eyes. It's been fun, y'all...

Joe Napiecek‏    #Duquesne was just up 5 with the ball 15 sec left in the a-10 tournament. Game ended in regulation. I'll let you guess who won

John Perrotto‏   I hate to say this but I really think Duquesne would be best served by leaving the A-10 for a smaller conference. They can't compete.

Ian Kondrat‏   Story of Duquesne Basketball's 2016-2017 season= compete with good teams, blow a lead, and fail miserably #FireFerri

Steve DiMiceli‏    Feels like a fitting way for Ferry to potentially end his Duquesne career

Paul Zeise‏  Duquesne just finished the game on a 16-35 run and lost by one on a tip in with 1.5 seconds left...... so life is good!!!

Chris Strauss‏
Chris Strauss Retweeted Brian Batko
Even by typical Duquesne standards, this one was impressive

Ricky Mellick‏   Duquesne just lost in the most duquesne way possible

Rich Donahue‏    Duquesne probably just had the most epic collapse I've ever covered and yet I saw it coming

Anthony Dunkel   Duquesne up 5 w/ 24 sec left: Gives up layup. Turnover. Gives up layup. Misses 2 FT's Give up 2nd chance tipin. You (profanity) suck Duquesne!

Pete Ash‏    Duquesne was up 5 with 24 seconds left and blew it? On their home floor (practically)? Woof.

Steve Vargo‏  The ending of that Duquesne - St. Louis game summed up the Dukes' entire season in one minute.

Andrew Prinzo‏   Idk who to complain to but Jim Ferry is a terrible coach so fix that Duquesne

Paul Gerardi‏  What a choke job for Duquesne basketball

Alex Stumpf‏   Duquesne's season ends in near poetic fashion: a 72-71 loss to SLU

Drew Casey‏   Duquesne chokes away a 5 point lead with just 24 seconds left. At least they can walk back to campus. Yikes. End of Jim Ferry?

Jordan Majewski‏   And Duquesne finishes off their total collapse

Karlo Zovko‏   Duquesne basketball is so bad I don't even know why I try and support them. Absolutely unreal.

Didn't Zeise JUST tell us why Ferry shouldn't be fired? Or am I confusing him with another columnist.

Correct wrote the apologist piece a couple weeks ago.

I have held off my email reply to him until now!

Zeise wasn't really paying attention until then. After he wrote the piece, he started watching, and now he knows. The one reason why I put more blame on the coaches, is that Ron did exactly what his track record said he would do. His record said he would get us off the floor, and that we would be competitive, and have winning records, but that we would not become a power in the league. This is exactly what happened. If you simply couldn't win here, he would have posted a record similar to the other coaches. Get the right coach, and you can win here, I truly believe that. Identify a handful of coaches with outstanding records, playing strong fundamental basketball (no gimmicks), find out what their price will be, and pay to get one. If you go the cheap route, failure is assured.

Actually Zeise's email response to me was fairly lengthy and displayed a lot of knowledge about DU and it's recent and not so recent sad past. He is not some 22 year old cub  reporter stuck on the Duquesne beat.

Re: Perspective from a fellow DU alum and a basketball coach

Tejas, there's a difference between being familiar with the administrative problem and showing up at Palumbo and seeing the way the team plays, seeing the sparse crowds, and feeling the frustration that should be felt.

I don't know if that was part of his message -- the first-hand account of being there this season -- so you can certainly correct my assumption if need be.

But I remain firm in the belief: Jim Ferry will be back next year. The year after that, too.

.

Exactly! He knows we stink, but has he been watching to see Ferry's very obvious shortcomings? I doubt it. He's likely been distracted by the circus at the other end of Forbes Avenue. I sure hope Harper is watching Pitt, and knows not to make the same mistake of bringing in some retread.
