Offline Would be NICE to have ALL the posters/thoughts in one place for now. Offline Would be NICE to have ALL the posters/thoughts in one place for now. Disagree. Ron had a track record of getting solid results, and he did it at more than one school. DAP was put in an impossible situation. He was given the worst staff imaginable. Perhaps with a proper staff, he might have done better. Nee was an awful hire. He had checked out, and anyone who looked closely at his record at Nebraska would have figured out that his "success" was done with smoke and mirrors, mostly due to tons of cupcakes ooc. He lost to a 14 as a 3 seed. Terrible coach. Should have hired Flint. He wouldn't have gotten us to the top of the league, but would likely have gotten results similar to Ron. Carroll was an assistant, and you never know what you're getting with an assistant. I thought Edgar might work, but he didn't recruit at all, plus had a gimmick system that required tons of talent to work. How was the school at fault for him not being able to win with James, Pipkins, Bosnic, and Price as his core? Jim Satalin wins 20 games if he had a core like that. Offline He'll be back, he'll be extended, and I won't care because I will be gone. Offline i think ferry will be let go monday. Last edited by heelsdukesfan (3/10/2017 7:35 am) Offline i think its very possible to win at Duq. We've had terrible ADs who have made terrible decisions. The lack of a quality AD has been the number one thing during all of this. First you had Red Manning, who was given the job as a gift after retiring as coach. Jim Satalin basically didn't answer to the AD. BC was just an utter disaster. He was worse than GA, worse than the succession of clowns that Pitt keeps hiring. GA was another awful AD. Not so much based on his decisions (other than firing Ron), but on his lack of people skills. Harper may finally be the right man for the job. Let him pick his own coach. Offline I'm going with C and I 100% back the decision. Offline I'm going with C and I 100% back the decision. When was this interview on the fan? They usually archive that type of stuff I wonder if there is a link on their website. Offline Folks, you're listening to "people with an ear into the program," I presume, because some of you have a lot of belief both in the notion that there is a plan for the program, and the need, on Duquesne University's part, to fire Jim Ferry. Online! Option B for me. When he returned after the St. Louis game his name should have been removed from his office door, locks changed, and his belongings in the hall. Since that didn't happen I'm guessing he's sticking around. Offline C: Ferry will be fired next week. Harper cannot look at (what's left of the dwindling core who support athletics) in the face and retain a coach who lost 22 games, including an eleven game losing streak at the end of the year and only 3 conference wins. Year #3? Maybe but not #5. Offline I'm going with C and I 100% back the decision. When was this interview on the fan? They usually archive that type of stuff I wonder if there is a link on their website. I wrote the wrong site. It was on DKsportsPGH. Here is the link. It's also the reason I believe Ferry will be fired. Harper doesn't exactly endorse him. The only thing I would disagree with here is the logic that things will remain the same because of how history has played itself out at Duquesne, which everything you stated in those regards is true. Offline I've seen Pat Kelsey mentioned as a candidate for Umass. I sure hope they pass on him so we can go after him full steam ahead. That's ok. If they take him, let's go get Becker. Offline Put me down for C. Ferry goes and I agree! I am willing to take my chances on current players and recruits. If I thought that JF could coach these kids up I would cast a different vote. His replacement won't be here long, but he'll eventually end up in the Basketball Hall Of Fame. The Dukes will make a shocking run to the Final Four. This will happen, not 10 years from now, but before Lewis, and Mike leave the Bluff. It is spoken! Thus, it will come to pass! Offline He does seem to be a really good fit, doesn't he duq81?. From Wikipedia And Becker / Vermont are heading to the NCAA tournament. Offline Obviously some of the freshman must be playing well, but I'm guessing that some of their key players are Juniors and Seniors. Some of the 9 freshmen are probably walk-ons. Some of the 9 freshmen are probably walk-ons. I doubt if he brought in 9 scholarship freshmen That was 2 years ago, and he said 9 freshmen and sophomores. Those guys are juniors and seniors now. Production on this year's team is spread across all four classes, which is always a good situation, as you never want your coach to load up, and have 5 seniors starting.
Coaching Survey
Please select One of the Four which you think will happen and describe your feelings.
A. Coach Ferry will be RETURNING - YOU AGREE with the decision.
B. Coach Ferry will be RETURNING - YOU DISAGREE with the decision.
C. Coach Ferry will NOT BE RETURNING -- YOU AGREE with the decision.
D. Coach Ferry will NOT BE RETURNING -- YOU DISAGREE with the decision.
I'm going with C - I think Harper probably made up his mind a while ago - for obvious reasons was not going to comment on it before hand. I think on Monday - he will call Coach Ferry into the office and inform him - the actual announcement would take place on Tuesday. I'm basing this on Mr. Harper evaluating Coach Ferry's ENTIRE 5 YEAR BODY OF WORK - Very little on the positive side - not just the losses this year - but some of the margins were unacceptable -- There seems little hope that the immediate future is any brighter.
As a Caveat -- I think it is going to be INCREDIBLY Difficult for ANY ONE to win at Duquesne - but 18-22 losses EVERY YEAR ARE UNACCEPTABLE!!
"On Paper" - Ron probably looked the WORST of the recent coaching hires - Ferry was close - (Except for maybe Porter and you COULD make the argument Young African-American with local ties) as a reason to give him a chance) and the Results under Ron - were the best by FAR!!

Re: Coaching Survey
I think the Palumbo stuff is smoke. I don't believe there is commitment to winning.
You saw Ferry's quote: we're going to do our best to be a middle of the pack team.
So if you like Jim Ferry, and his stable yet low qualified crew of assistants, his continuous turnover of players, his desire to play four short guys 39 minutes every night, his disdain for defense, etc., be of good cheer. You will be living the dream for a long time.
Re: Coaching Survey
i think its very possible to win at Duq. We've had terrible ADs who have made terrible decisions.
I believe in Harper and Gormley.
A lot of interesting candidates have been mentioned.
Id like to see someone hired who has a basic philosophical idea of what it takes to win in a10.
current success doesn't guarantee future success
an assistant from a big time program isnt guaranteed to succeed
a re-tread from a power 5 isn't guaranteed to fail.
They really need to find someone who gets that the a10 is a big boy league. you win with solid defense, toughness, and a good offensive game plan.
id be happy taking a gamble(like a scheyer or wes miller at UNCG) the same as I would with a re tread or current successful coach at a low major as long as they open press conference with:
"I don't care if we win with a final score of 12-10, we are gonna play tough, hard nosed defense that picks our man up at half court and makes our opponent uncomfortable by starting their offense at half court, we are going to use our defense to create offense. On offense, i want to push to ball up the floor and look for an easy 2; if not available, want to kick back out, start o at top of key and run a 3-2 motion offense with utilization of big guys, and high low post game with back screens. no one will out hustle us or be in better shape than us, and no one will play fundamental basketball better than us"

I would bet everything I have on the Palumbo renovations. Even during the interview with the Fan, Harper kept struggling to not mention the renovations as a done deal with his tenses of verbs. It's going to happen, and from his vision, it sounds like it will be awesome. He wants it to be for the entire university, so I am hoping it has something similar to the Pete where Students can get food there. If students congregate in a building on a daily basis, they are more likely to go there for other activities. Palumbo is close to the dorms too (especially the new one) so it would be a nice location for students to hang out. From my understanding, the building that goes over the current IM field would be more for regular students.
In addtion, I have been told from sources that the actual project is BETTER than the current renderings on the website. Then again, take my source with a grain of salt.
I've seen Pat Kelsey mentioned as a candidate for Umass. I sure hope they pass on him so we can go after him full steam ahead.

Re: Coaching Survey
I am basing my position on behaviors. I've seen this act up close and personal for 37 years now.
Dr. Gormley is the most passionate fan I've seen in his position since Fr. Mac. Mr. Harper has the qualifications to be our best AD ever.
The Board of Musty Trustees controls everything.
If you're getting "inside information," that's your source.
They are floating rumors, and then clamping the lid on information. You'll forget all about the Palumbo stuff in time. Ferry will be back, and while you think he's a lame duck at some point his contract will be extended well beyond my lifetime.
Lucky you; if I'm right, you'll never hear me say "I told you so."
Re: Coaching Survey
Re: Coaching Survey
I would like to add one caveat, if it were not for the planned renovations to Palumbo, then I would say it's about 60-40 Ferry stays. Harper can show drawings and schematics to the interviewees and assure them that the school is putting up real money to make this a big boy program!
And that takes care of the "Same old Duquesne" argument. Plus any coach worth his salt knows that five years and Ferry's record is not being "quick on the trigger" and always changing coaches.
Personally I hope they take their time, pick the right guy and give him a six year contract at a competitive salary!

My counterpoint to that is exactly what you posted, this president seems passionate and committed to the two biggest athletic programs on a much greater level than the previous. More importantly, this ad is so much more impressive and has real pedigree compared to the Buffon who used to occupy Harper's office. The hire of Harper was exciting to me because he seems like the type of candidate that with more experience, could easily end up at a top flight A10 school or even a power 5. He came from a place that does things the right way.
I highly, highly doubt that he would have taken the position here without some serious contingencies put in place to have things done in a manner and time horizon that he thought he needed. I'm sure DU was not his only option, and I also doubt he would have taken this job with the understanding that things would remain as they have. He has talked about changes to the program and culture since he has arrived (18 months ago).
I don't think Ferry's contract is a financial hurdle anymore, there is one year left on his deal, not two, and the buyout wouldn't be the whole of his salary anyway.
All I'm saying is not all hope is lost yet my friend. Like I said though, if nothing happens by Tuesday I will be very worried myself.

With nine freshman and sophomores on the roster, Vermont earned its seventh-straight 20 win season, and the 12th out of the last 14 years. Becker became the only coach in Vermont and America East history to win 20 games each of his first four years. Finishing second in the America East regular season...
Interesting... I thought having freshman and sophomores meant that you had a built in excuse to lose...

Ferry will be back. History says so.
The 3/8 outcome was both a heartbreaking s$!t show of a distaster & a re-affirmation that the powers that be don't give a damn.
I should change my user name on this board to Door Mat. Because I love the jersey & will be back to take my beatings.
As quoted, the program brand motto will become "Oh no - we suck again"
Re: Coaching Survey
And I totally agree with ED. They are floating the rumors of the renovation and then pulling them back.
Sure if someone gives DU $40M for renovations they will happen. That ain't gonna happen. The Board will commit to the two new popcorn machines for the 2017/18 season.
