Pound for Pound Comparison

For discussion - given the leveling of talent & conference & strength of schedule, who under performs as a game day coach more ..... Jim Ferry @ Duquesne  or Roy Williams @ UNC Chapel Hill / Kansas?

Re: Pound for Pound Comparison

EXCELLENT POINT!!! While people like Dickie V almost hyperventilate & salivate over "their greatness" when they talk about coaches like Williams - I wonder HOW successful HE would be at DUQUESNE? -  Where he REALLY had to recruit - rather than "pick and choose" from among the kids almost begging to come to his place.  As for "X's" and "O's"  -  Maybe it is a little easier when the "X's" - are McDonald's/Parade All Americans -  And the "O's" might be 2-3 Star Recruits.  Not to mention a REAL HOME COURT advantage they enjoy in the Non-League Schedule - Still for all intents and purposes am reluctant to place Ferry, Williams, Self and Boehim in ANY SINGLE DISCUSSION!!!

While it's almost impossible for Williams, Self and Boehim (He might be at the TOP of MY list for this category) to live up to their "seeding" in the Post Season (Conference and NCAA Tournament Okay) each year THEY SEEM TO FALL FAR SHORT AS OPPOSED TO JUST SHORT- when the competition is a little more stiff.

This is one reason why I think Pitt messed up with Jamie Dixon - Did NOT realize that it's not THAT easy for their Program to knock off the kind of records he did -  And focus like they did on "post season" failures. Don't know how successful Stallings might be - did see Dixon knock of Kansas - BUT WHO CARES ABOUT THEIR PROBLEMS - AS ONE CRITIC ONCE SAID "WORLD DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS - 90% DON'T CARE - OTHER 10% IS GLAD YOU HAVE THEM!!

Expectations rise and fall. Pitt fans were giddy about making the NIT in Howland's second year. A decade later, they wanted to get rid of Dixon for not making the Final Four. The same thing would happen here. It's the nature of the beast.

Re: Pound for Pound Comparison

One of the points I was thinking about --  Did they UNDERACHIEVE in Post Season?? --  or OVER ACHIEVE in REGULAR SEASON??   Maybe some of those 26-7 records should have really been 23-10 teams (or numbers like that)  Maybe some #3 seeds should have been #6 seeds etc.  Jamie always seemed a decent enough sort - in ADDITION to the time he visited Ron in the hospital --  Stallings/Ferry seem to be the snarky type.

Agree with this. He really only had NBA types on his team the year they lost to Villanova (one of the few times I was rooting like crazy for Pitt). Dixon got the most out of what he had. Despite the snarky remarks you got out of folks on this board, Dixon's program was about as clean as you can get, and still compete at that level. His refusal to get down in the dirt was a reason why certain Pitt fans (the same type who wanted Ron out), turned against him. I'm glad he did well this season. By all accounts, he's a good guy. He was at the hospital with Ron the night we beat BC, maybe the best win of Ron's tenure at Duquesne.
