News

According to multiple sources, Jim Ferry's tenure as men's basketball coach at Duquesne University is over. Announcement is coming this week, perhaps as early as Monday.

This comes from three independent sources. All are in the know.

Yes, I was wrong. I truly thought he'd be staying. I now believe that Dr. Gormley and Mr. Harper may be the strong leaders we need. Although I still don't trust the Trustees.

So here's my promised public confession: I'm stupid. I'm an idiot.

But I'm a stupid idiot who will throw my support behind our new leaders and new coach because I'm hungry for an NCAA Tournament.

And to Mr. Hilltopper, we've discussed the Ferry to Quinippiac rumor in a few other threads. I'll say it one more time. Greggy hired a search firm to replace a coach with a winning record. If his top candidate is a guy with two good seasons in 15 and five bad seasons in a row, it tells you that neither the AD nor the search firm are worth their weight in 💩

Re: News

Update: independent multiple sources inform me that there is at least one member of the Board of Trustees (I wouldn't know her or him if we entered a revolving door at the same time) has given appropriate voice to the need for a successful men's basketball program at Duquesne, and is an advocate for the value it would bring to the university.

Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time since Amodio stabbed Ron in the back, I have hope. Legitimate hope.

I sincerely would like to find out that the Palumbo upgrade is real (I have conflicting reports on that) because it would be another step towards turning this around.

Re: News

I hope your sources are correct.  I don't enjoy seeing people being fired (even if there is a big money buyout) but, in my humble opinion, this move has to be made.  If JF would become the coach hired by Amodio and if all of the current players and recruits followed him to the MAAC, I'm not convinced that they would have a winning program.

This is the best thing to happen to Duquesne Basketball since I have been a student here. At least I am graduating with hope. Go Dukes.

If the recruits go, they go, and I think you're right they're not turning Quinippiac around.

I don't know about Mike & Mike. I hope they stay. But I believe a good coach could take Robinson, Saunders, James, Smith and Castro and win now. Throw in the sophomores to be and Littleson and I think we're above midpoint. That's opinion, of course.

Ferry is a done deal.

Re: News

My hope, assuming that ED's scoop is true, is that Harper has been in constant contact with our current players and recruits. Also, while I am ready for a new coach, I hope Duquesne fans can be respectful. Ferry might not have succeeded like we hoped, but I think he is a good man who ran a clean program.

Whole-heartedly agreed.  Nothing Personal Mr. Ferry, just business.

Ferry seems like a decent, stand up guy. I am sure he is a good husband and devoted father. Let me ask a question. How many of us have never ever had a "Peter Principle" type moment at work, a sport, school, where you get to a level where you are not effective. I know I have had a few in my life.

And let's remember even at the 40% bracket, Ferry has pocketed over two million dollars in the last five years. His four kids college education is in the bank.

Personally I hope he goes back down the MAAC or NEC level and puts his system into place and has a successful career.  I Look forward to the 2022 NCAA tourney where  A-10 Champion Duquesne ranked  # 4, coached by  ________ faces off against  #13 ________ from the _______Conference, coached by Jim Ferry.

Re: News

Ferry might be well served to do what Ron did, and get on the staff of a first rate coach and see what it really takes to win at a high level. Ferry became a head coach at a young age. I don't think he ever worked under a really good coach.

I thought that as well.  Adelphi Who? and then to a Division I program.

Ron has even admitted that working under Thuggins has made him a much better coach. I'd like to see someone give him another shot. Cleveland St. would be smart to give Ron a call. Gary Waters has just retired, so they have a spot open. Speaking of Waters, if there was a worse move than Amodio firing Ron, it was Rutgers firing Waters. His tenure was the best Rutgers has done since they were a powerhouse under Tom Young. They fired him because they had the hots for Fred Hill. That worked out even worse than Ferry did here.

Amodio is not that good at sales, and it would be a huge sales job.

He fired Tom Moore, who had a 162-146 record at Quinnipiac over 10 years, with 4 post season tourneys (but no NCAA appearance), moving up from the NEC to the MAAC.  Moore was also a Connecticut guy.

And then you have to try to sell Ferry?  3 winning seasons out of 15; a .382 win percentage in the A-10; .461 over his 15 year D-1 career. No connection to Quinnipiac or Connecticut.  And you are probably going to have to commit to 5 years at at least $500K per year (current coach earning $450K).  Good luck on selling that.

As duq81 pointed out, it would be a good move by Ferry to get a job as an assistant at a high level program. I got the feeling that Ferry was pretty much self taught; not a strong coaching tree background.  He could use the step back to refocus, learn and adjust.

Re: News

It sounds like Amodio selling Ferry to Quinn like he tried getting his buddy Gaudio here.  Before a revolt.   Quinn fans will revolt at Ferrys name.

Re: News

Didn't Ferry have a DC type guard and a 6-7 Forward from San Antonio that carried him to 2 NCAA in his year 9 and 10 at LIU-Brooklyn? 2 above average players on a team can't carry you to an A-10 Championship, maybe he just did the best he could in a tougher conference.

Yes, Ferry had the conference player of the year, Boyd at 6-7; another 1st team all conference in 6-7 Olasewere and a 2nd team all-Conference player in Brickman, the point guard. 3 of the Top 10 players in the NEC.

Certainly Ferry deserves much credit for assembling that talent, but that kind of recruiting domination was not going to occur in the A-10. That talent gap can overcome a lot of poor/no coaching.

Quinnipiac was in the NEC when Ferry was winning there. Maybe GA will try to sell him on that basis.

Take it to the bank.

I would not have done this without absolute certainty and multiple sources.

I was a journalism major at DU and had the life-changing fortune to have Paul Krakowski as a professor. I don't deal in speculation and rumor. If I share something as a fact, it's a fact.

Re: News

My son was in from out of town...we went to the two A-10 semi-finals today - what a great atmosphere - 1st game RI had no competition - 2nd game overtime - there had to be 5,000 VCU fans there and 1,500 from Richmond.  Would be nice if DU fans could start traveling again.

VBC, Wasn't it you that had a friend with son who played basketball that said he wanted to play at Duquesne. Last we heard he missed a season due to injury. Any chance of an update and if it wasn't you I quess my memory is leaving.

Re: News

Yes, that's me.
He's recovered from the broken ankle and helped his team to the second round of the WPIAL playoffs as a junior.  He was named athlete of the week by The Mon Valley Independent a few weeks ago.  Right now I think of him as a low D-1 prospect as at least for now it seems his growth has stopped at 6' 4".  I'd project him to perhaps be at best a Brad Midgley level player and quite frankly we need better than that if we're going to win conference championships.

Also, baseball has moved back into the top spot of sports for him as he's a D-1 prospect as a pitcher and perhaps a late round MLB draft pick.
