Re: Blasts from the past.

I was actually at the Villanova/Dukes game mentioned in the link. Dukes were 5-0 and ranked Villanova was 6-0. We had Atkins, Arnold and Tunstall up front with BB. The game was very physical throughout. Atkins was ejected in the first five minutes of the game. Was at the Palestra and was an absolute war. One of my top five games ever seen in person. Needless to sat, the Dukes coach and fans celebrated big time at a Villanova watering hole post game. Thanks for the memory!

The Dukes were not ranked. The Dukes were last ranked in December of 1975, when they beat Oregon in the first round of the Far West Classic, and were ranked 19th in the UPI poll. We then lost the next 2 games, to Texas A&M, and to Northwestern. We haven't been ranked since. We haven't been ranked by the AP since 1972.

See the pregame article on page 5. Note the Pitt/Bona article underneath.

Re: Blasts from the past.

We weren't ranked, but we made the cover of Eastern Basketball magazine which at the time was akin to being featured on Sports Center.

"Duquesne Raising Cain". Had us ranked 4th in the East. I really thought we were reestablishing ourselves as a power. Didn't happen though.

Re: Blasts from the past.

That team also had Doug Arnold.  I was also at the game at the Palestra.  It was one of my favorite all time Duquesne wins.  We thought it was over when they tossed Bruce early in the game, but the rest of the team really stepped up and beat Villanova convincingly on what was their home court at the time.  Great celebration at the bar afterwards.  That was the most talented team we have had in the post Red Manning years.

Re: Blasts from the past.

OK, here's where my memory is weak on the Villanova game. Is that the one in which Mickey Davila, playing on what I can best call iffy knees, hit a putback at the end to win the game?

Speaking of Mickey, anyone remember the game at Palumbo in which a ref made a bad call and Davila made the guy chase the ball? The ref reached out for the ball and Mickey turned around and rolled the ball towards the opposite basket. Got teed up for it, but the Dukes won and it was funny as hell.

No, that was at LaSalle. The Dukes exploded out to a 20 point lead like 9 minutes in. BB was destroying LaSalle, but the Explorers fought back, and I think they eventually took the lead very late. Davila hit the game winner. A shame what happened to him. We should have had him, Norm, and Hosea manning the guard position, then adding BB. If they had the technology then that they do now, he'd have resumed his career without a hitch. Same goes for Kenny Durrett. A knee injury just killed you back then.

Re: Blasts from the past.

Mickey was a big guard (6-4) for his time.
