Jim Ferry

Jim did not achieve the results required to continue to coach here. The university had to part ways. However, he did not deserve the personal attacks that he received on this board. He is a good person who ran a clean program and who tried his best to win. I wish him and his family well. Same for his coaches.

Re: Jim Ferry

There were no personal attacks. His coaching style was criticized and many didn't appreciate the fact he threw players under the bus after a loss. But nothing personal.

We all wish him well.

There were some personal attacks. One poster in particular, constantly denigrated his NY roots.

Re: Jim Ferry

Kudos to the press release drafted by the AD & President! Unlike The Clowns letter which mysteriously ended up at CBS sports destroying Ron's career the current administration shows competence & class. The prior administration did not which has led to the current sorry state of the program. Secondly, a current poster  after crushing Ferry in his post about time for a change used such quotes as " no competence" keep him "hell no" & " bite the bullet". Amnesia my friend? How about a poster raising a New Yorker comment which I stand by. Besides the new coach selling recruits he has to be embedded in the city of Pittsburgh.  Coach Ferry was not as evidenced by the significant reduction in season ticket holders. However lack of any fan support clearly was the fault  of  Chuck & the Clown. Read your prior post my friend prior to making such comments.

HIRE SCHEYER!

Once again why do you think Scheyer would be a good hire? He's not even 30, has never been a head coach, has never had the responsibility of leading a program, has no idea what that entails.

I get he is a former player but it's not like he was a star that would have name recognition with recruits. He was A pretty good player on a good but not great Duke team and never played in the NBA. How do we even know if he can recruit or not? I don't know how involved he is with their recruiting but Duke is one of the few NCAA programs that picks guys as much as guys pick Duke. No one is going to come banging the door down to play at Duquesne, you have to go out and find guys and get them excited about coming here. I don't see any evidence that points to scheyer being capable of doing this. In fairness, I don't see any evidence as to why he couldn't either.

How do we even know players would listen/respect him. He would be less than ten years older than the guys he is coaching and was never a fiery guy as a player. I just don't see any reason he would be a good hire other than the fact that he would be coming from Duke, whatever that's worth.

Re: Jim Ferry

One poster, who denies that there were personal attacks, repeatedly referred to him as "Jimmy." That was demeaning and personal and is an example of what he did not deserve.

Oh my god, who cares. He's gone, I will likely never think about him again. He won 21 conference games in 5 years and had an overall career winning percentage of like 39%. Oh and by the way we paid seven hundred thousand dollars a year for five years for that. I don't care if someone refers to him as "Jimmy".

I don't think I ever took any personal shots at him, but at the end of the day he was an awful coach and commonly threw his players under the bus. I'm not going to say he is a good or bad guy because I honestly don't know either way. All I know was he was in way over head at this level and we will be much better off without him. This is one of the cleanest, least vulgar boards I have ever seen and while I appreciate that fact let's not make a big deal about someone calling Jim Jimmy or people talking about him being from New York. I mean how bad is that really?

Re: Jim Ferry

I agree that getting personal is not good. It serves no real purpose. Having said that, I could not care about coach Ferry's feelings. He is a grown man. In any case he is the 'former' coach.

In what language is it demeaning, personal and undeserved? Jimmy is a familiar form of James, which I presume is his given birth name. I have a grown-ass cousin (over 60) who goes by Jimmy.

Re: Jim Ferry

I 100% agree with the decision to make a change.  I won't recite the litany of reasons.  I do not care what some pompous no nothing like Zeise says, or wannabe bloggers say.  This was the right decision.  Nothing personal just business (take the cannoli, leave the gun).  Time to put the bucks out to get the right guy and make the investments necessary to really turn things around. Harper and Gormley have my confidence.

Re: Jim Ferry

So Ferry's only tweet since the firing was announced was him retweeting Paul Zieses article titled "Bad Coaching isn't the Problem at Duquesne".

Still accepting no responsibility from the grave. I just find that hilarious. He is so delusional he truly believes the problem is everything and everyone besides himself.

I don't have much respect for someone who constantly points the finger and never accepts responsibility.

Him and Ziese are right though. It's the administrations fault (Daugherty and Amodio are still there right?) that Ferry lost 8 games this year by an average of one possession, almost all of which they had significant leads in.

Re: Jim Ferry

Guess we all are hopeful that the next coach can recruit, can make the game day adjustments to win and can make Duquesne be successful.

How many times have we seen pathetic or non existent programs turned into winners? Let's hope it can finally happen this time.

Re: Jim Ferry

Collapsing down the stretch over and over in games is definitely a reflection of the administration. If only we would have given him 3 more years we could be a perennial CBI powerhouse.

Good riddance. He was a con man.

Re: Jim Ferry

Honest posts...HE DOESN"T GET IT...STILL not taking responsibility - that is one of the reasons he was probably not retained.  Some coaches at least say they didn't get the job done...or could have done better.  Comments like this reinforces the decision to let him go.  As far as Zeise, I really haven't had a problem with his reporting and actually am amazed that with his son being a Pitt football player, that he has been fair with that program and Penn States.  In regard to the Dukes, I agree with many that his reporting is from the outside looking in, not understanding the issues Ferry developed with no defense, etc. and most likely listening to Ferry while he served the Kool-Aid.  He can get as upset as he wants, Harper did the right thing!

Moderators, in keeping up with my well-developed and self-motivating OCD, please move the clocks ahead one hour on this board!

This also shows why one more year would not have been the difference or why things wouldn't have changed. He didn't see his coaching as the issue. He truly believed it wasn't him who had to change. That makes a lot of sense with what we've seen year to year as we have seen little adjustment on Ferrys part in terms of philosophy, coaching style, or any kind of adjustments to reflect the step up in league.

It's somehow more comforting to know Ferrys own arrogance played a major part in his downfall.

Was out all day and just now able to address this post. Ordinarily, I have sympathy for those who lose their jobs, even in cases like this when it is justified. However when I read that Ferry retweeted the Zeise article with the clear intended purpose of blaming the University for his failures, he gets no sympathy from me. He must have the biggest "basketballs" in the world to have the arrogance and audacity to blame the University who paid him $660,000 a year for 5 years plus a buyout payment for his ineptness at coaching in the A10. I wish him well, but he canceled his right to get any respect from Duquesne fans when he retweeted that article.

It just comes down to, Ferry is not a good coach. He really never understood what it would take to win in the A-10. In five years his A-10 record just sucked. Give him five more years and we won't have a BB program. That's how bad he did here. Brick by brick, he just killed this program.

Also referring to him as "small time Jim" was another example of the personal attacks that made it easy for the competition to negative recruit against Duquesne.  I hope Ferry's departure at least can serve to unify Duquesne supporters.  I'm hopeful that the new coach has everyone's support.

Re: Jim Ferry

I would still like to have seen our team next year with Mike and Mike and the recruits, along with probably two senior transfers, and the other returning players.

Re: Jim Ferry

Why? First we don't know who the coach will be.
What is the true talent level of the one's signed by the fired coach, based on the last 4 years they are average to below average A-10 players most likely.

Don't you think the incoming coach will have several recruits that can be brought along and possible JUCO with size. The guys coming back managed to lose 22 games so upgrades need to be made, Sr. Transfers included.

Plus calling Ferry Small Tim Jim was more about the way the program was run and the players he brought in, Jimmy is my brother in laws moniker and at 68 it isn't an insult.

Also not meant to be a personal attack. It was about the four small and a wing lineup he always seemed to have on the court. And the record.

Look at the record.

Accurate criticism of where he belongs, at a small time D One program or less. Nothing about that is personal or an attack. He sucks as a coach and we gave him 5 years to prove it, and boy did he ever.

Him retweeting that article suggests to me he is making this concerted effort through the media to make the firing look like a bad decision and that it was unwarranted and he didn't get a fair crack. What a joke, he is essentially defaming the university for his own benefit of hopefully getting another job. If that is what he is truly doing I can think of a whole bunch of personal attacks I wouldn't mind tossing his way.

Re: Jim Ferry

I don't go on twitter so I am unfamiliar with how it works (getting old my brothers), but if Ferry did retweet the Zeise bullarticle then he deserves what he gets.  Good Lord, we teach our kids to take responsibility and here is this guy who never once shouldered any of the blame for his abysmal record!  Hell, I suspect that contractually to get the buy-out one would be subject to a gag order and if this is Ferry's attempt to skirt around that I would look into a breach of the contractually agreement by Ferry.  Again, this is based on presumption, but if in fact what I speculate is accurate then I would nail Ferry for it.  Screw him - how is that for personal!!!!
