I agree with Dukes2012 we don't know what happened. We likely have very competent leadership that is suffering from 40 years of bad moves and incompetence. That was my thinking when I noted that we would not get the guy most think we will get.   We may have to go the redemption route. Someone like the other Rice.

I say that hoping we are still in the game with some. But the names that were put forth by various posters are dropping like flies.

Duquesne fans should be happy he is overrated. They should be ecstatic if they get Becker from Vermont.

I agree, I wasn't excited about King Rice at all; just don't think he would be the right fit for Duquesne.  Good that there was no deal.

I for one think that Vermont's coach John Becker is a better choice than King Rice.  Still would like to see Joe Dooley in the mix.  Fife does not excite me see below record as a head coach.

Fife is interesting but he might be under consideration for the Indiana job.

Yeah I really like the Xavier coaching tree.  Which is why when the names were surfacing the other day I was much more excited about Pat Kelsey than King Rice.  I also liked that Kelsey had Mark Prosser on staff. I kinda watched that Prosser coaching tree from afar ever since Pitt almost hired him.  I was never a huge Dixon fan and I always wondered "what if" in regards to Skip.  Although not all his guys worked out either (see Dino).  Anyway I kinda see Steele as a decent alternative to not being in a league with competing for Kelsey.

Keep in mind that Fife took over a program at age 25 that wasn't even in a conference.  It's pretty impressive that he did as well as he did honestly.  Plus, he has been under Izzo since then.  I imagine he learned quite a bit. 

Still prefer Becker by a mile btw.

Can Fife recruit in the east. If his strength is recruiting Chicago, and Detroit, he's going to have problems as he's not going to get many kids from there to come to Duquesne. The Big 10 owns that area. Pitt hired an assistant named Smoke, who was from Detroit. Pitt didn't land any kids from there. You might get an occasional player from out there, but Duquesne is going to live or die with players from the east. If he can't recruit the east, he will fail.

Becker: 78–18 in league play.

Would not be upset with either of these guys. Quality candidates.

After going back and looking harder at Fife I agree he would be a quality candidate.  Thanks.

LOL! None of that should mean a thing. Norm and BB played under Senior, and Somerset played with him. They're speaking up for a friend. I'm not totally against Rice though. I would take Becker, or Dooley over him in a nanosecond though. I actually like Travis Steele a bit better than Fife. Familiarity with the league is a plus there.

Reported locally in Fort Myers, FGCU Coach, at $240,000 , is looking at top Asst. at NC State, since Coach Gottfried will most likely go to top programs in a year or two and put Dooley in line for HC at NC State.

Dooley is currently at FGCU that has total Athletic Budget of 13 million to spread across all men's and women's D-1 sports.

He longs for a large recruiting budget and big time program again, he left Kansas as  Assitant making 300,000 for a 220,000 salary at Dunk City.

Princeton head coachMitch Henderson has two three star recruits coming in this year and the previous four years has had Five three star and six two star recruits compared to Becker who has one two star this year and the previous four years had two two stars and two three stars. Ivy coach Fran Dunphy made a nice transition from Penn to Temple, as well as Thompson has lasted thirteen years at Georgetown with mixed results. Mooney a former Princeton player has done ok at Richmond. The last four Princeton coaches have moved on to higher division one programs with various mixed results. One thing for sure is that if Henderson came to Duquesne it would be a major pay increase as Princeton does not pay their coaches. Henderson could also talk to Mooney about the A 10 as it is the top mid major conference over the last several years.
