Re: New coach thread

No one jumping all over Twitter to point fingers at UMass. Just sayin'.

Re: New coach thread

Wow what happened at UMass is way more embarrassing than what has happened to us. Kind of feel bad for them. Shady move by Kelsey.

Oh yeah being in Pittsburgh I assure you there is a local anti-Duquesne bias, and as I was about to type I have no idea why I'm realizing the main sports station here provides the official coverage for all relevant Pitt sports news. I think they want Duquesne to stay beat down and not succeed.

It's ridiculous but at the same time I agree we can say at least we didn't get UMASSED.

No no no Pitt guys

I've always considered such a position to be silly.  Chuck Noll, Cleveland native, and former Brown. Darrell Royal, Texas legend. An Oklahoma Native, and a Sooner. Bo Schembechler, native Ohioan, and a protege of Woody Hayes. You hire the best candidate. Suzie is at Pitt, and she's a Nit. As for worrying about the coach leaving, you hope your coach is good enough to be stolen away. Coaches being lifers at one job is basically a thing of the past. Leave the program better than you found it, and I'll wish any coach well.

Not the worst, but doesn't excite me. I'd really like a guy who has coached in the east. A guy who has all of his recruiting ties in the Midwest is going to struggle here. You have to be able to recruit the northeast to win at Duquesne.

I bet King Rice is trying to get in at Georgetown. I wonder if someone pulled his coat about JT3 getting the boot?

Re: New coach thread

I've taken the liberty to have my university's back on Twitter. Even shot a rebuttal back to The Duquesne Duke. The late Paul Krakowski once taught aspiring journalists to be fair and accurate in reporting. People are quoting "sources" and stating things as though they are facts. Unless verified, they are not facts. No one has asked Duquesne University for its version of things. Gathering information from all relevant parties was once required. Now we quote imbeciles quoting sources from other imbeciles. They probably don't even know there's a new president and AD.

That's what I was thinking. Same with fife. Maybe there were some rumors flying around the coaching fraternity that some big jobs were going to open causing a ripple effect.

Re: New coach thread

I just read something that said Kelsey wants to return to Winthrop. You know what's funny, all the other guys we've pursued are considered "hot names" yet they haven't been linked anywhere else after us. Rice and Becker also said they are happy where they are.

So I just realized, as an up and coming coach who eventually wants to make it to a power 5 school, what's an easier road to getting there? Staying where you are with your infrastructure and dominance in a small conference, where you almost guaranteed to be able to get the best talent, consistently win 20+ games, and essentially have a NCAA tourney spot every year?

Or take over a fringe power 5 level program in a league with lots of talent and parody, and try to replicate your past success in a much more difficult situation to get ultimately where you want to go? Especially when if you aren't successful at our level your essentially condemned to those lower conference jobs for the rest of your career?

Kevin keatts looks like a genius, stay a big fish in a small pond until a 4 million dollar a year job comes calling. This may be the new direction of coaching hires.

I hope I'm wrong.

Now wait a minute. Was an assistant at Xavier. Teaches defense. Assistants with right recruiting ties could solve a lot of problems.

The guy we pick doesn't have to be sexy; just has to get the job done.

This guy was a Miami of Ohio & Xavier assistant for 12 years and the Arizona associate head coach for two years before becoming the Ball State head coach for the last 4 years where he had 21 wins in his last two years.  I would take him in a nano second.  The guy can coach, he can always hire recruiting assistants

I kind of agree, ED. We tried to make a sexy hire and it hasn't happened yet. Unfortunately, a sexy hire probably isn't going to happen until we have a few years of relative success. We need a solid coach to come in here and win some games. It will make the job more appealing in the future. I think we have the right AD and president in place, but unfortunately they are being penalized by the legacy of our former AD and president.

I've come to the conclusion that there is not an anti-Duquesne bias!  The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. WE have not mattered in the local scene in any way in basketball for so long that most veteran sports media people just don't care! In their minds we just don't exist. We are not worth the effort.  And, much as I hate to say it, they are right!

Positive spin: there may be guys that will be let go from the big 5 that would fit our profile.

What are the requirements now?  Breathing?

I got grief for calling the current admin Jokers.  I felt bad about that yesterday.

Back to the Jokers position.

I guarantee that the only people upset about this situation are the posters.    No one in that Athletic Department is embarrassed.   They all sleep easy at night.   Knowing they have jobs for life.

C'mon Kurt we have higher standards than that! Breathing without assistance!

Re: New coach thread

Coaches are going to want to see the fallout. some current head coach will take the IU, and Gtown jobs, creating 2 vacancies that might be attractive. Guys might want to see what opens up before they jump.

Re: New coach thread

espn and jon rothstein both report...im tempted to believe this one.

i dont think he was on any of our radars, but you know what? this isn't a bad get. his head coach history at a small good is pretty successful, and he's been the assistant at some solid programs like Xavier and Arizona.

if this is true, im pretty satisfied on the surface

Re: New coach thread

I googled.

The Muncie Star Press passed on the ESPN report that coach Whitford is
leaving Ball State.

Newspapers usually try to be accurate in their reporting though in our current
environment who knows.

For the record, our two best players are from St. Louis and Toronto.
