Re: If you could turn back the clock?

No turning back the clock for me.  It was the right move.  If Ferry's players leave & his recruits decommit, so what?  We knew what we were getting with Ferry:
1. No defense.
2. Blowing leads in the 2nd half after the other team makes adjustments & we fail to readjust.
3. Late in close games, the other team makes plays & we make mistakes.
4. Uptempo basketball with 5 guys playing 38 minutes, exhausted at crunch time.

When Ferry came here, he talked incessantly about "the way I want to play."  He wasn't going to change just because the team just went 10-22.  That wasn't his fault, according to him.

There were people who wanted Danny Nee retained because of the recruits he had coming in when he was fired.  Those kids went elsewhere, as did his entire roster except for Ajax & Achara.  But Ron Everhart turned it around & now we have to hope for a new coach who can turn it around again.

At some point, Duquesne really does need to get to the point where we keep a coach for a very long time.  But when it's obvious that you have the wrong guy, like Ferry, you have to cut your losses & move on.

Officer Dribble - well stated on all your points.
The 5 year history speaks for itself.
(My post of keep turning the clock back 5 years was a reflection of - if we only knew what we know now)

To add to your last point - "But when it's obvious that you have the wrong guy, like Ferry, you have to cut your losses & move on"
It reminds me of ... Stealing from a poker analogy - fold a bad hand & try a new table. .... Stealing a capital analogy - no evidence of a return on investment over time, move your capital to a better use. ... Stealing a dating analogy - she finally realized she deserved better & broke up with him.

Re: If you could turn back the clock?

There's a comment on the Pitt board that says Lewis and Mike would have transferred up and out eventually anyway, from someone claiming to be in the know. Said person claims one is headed to Michigan State (Fife do some recruiting while he was interviewing?), so I guess we'll know soon enough if his sources are accurate. I tend to agree, though I think Mike has the much higher ceiling. Might not have been this year, maybe next year after they got to watch some NCAA tourney games in Pittsburgh and wonder if they'd ever be part of that at Duquesne. Sound familiar? I believe we had three transfer out after last year too. It's not like Ferry ever had a stable program at Duquesne. Just the same, if this coaching search hadn't been such a fiasco, they might have stuck around at least a little while longer.

Re: If you could turn back the clock?

That's a valid point, that I have also considered.  They might have played another year at Duquesne and if things didn't improve, they might want to look elsewhere.    That's why picking the right coach, that can change the perception that Duquesne can't get to the NCAA.  The A-10 will get three or more bids every year, and got five a few years ago.  There is no reason why Duquesne can't get one of those bids from time to time.

Re: If you could turn back the clock?

That's why I don't worry much about the annual transfer-thon that is D-1 basketball in this era.
Look at LG Gill, who I liked and imagine he would have been the leading scorer had he stayed, he went to Maryland and did little out of OOC, he got pt under Ferry but little once he got into the big time schools games.

We need a better coach and surely better recruits, one's that are not selfish ball hogs and lead us to 22 loses.

Yes - Turn back the clock & keep turning for 5 years.
He was never the right hire.

Hell, since we have a time machine, let's turn back the clock to 1974, and let's hire Al Bailey when Red retires. Better yet, let's hire Jim Calhoun when Rice is fired.

Better yet...don't fire Rice!  Or RE! Ferry had five years to make progress.  One CBI bid and a .500 record with the guys you recruited is proof enough it is time to move on.  We're going to be OK... I think much of this so called chaos is fabricated media hype and speculation
