Colon

Courtesy You Tube:  The 2017 VISAA final four was held this past weekend at Virginia State University’s brand new basketball arena in Petersburg, Virginia. The division 2 final four came down to #1 Blue Ridge against #4 Virginia Episcopal and #2 Miller School against #3 Virginia Academy.

The first matchup of the day was a rematch from last year’s state championship where Sacha Killeya-Jones (Kentucky commit) and Justice Kithcart (Pitt commit) of VES defeated Blue Ridge in a closely contested game. This year was different though as senior forward Aamir Simms (Clemson commit) and senior guard Josh Colon would refuse to let that happen again, pulling out the win 59-53.

Colon put on a defensive clinic, locking up on the ball and wreaking havoc all over the floor. On the offensive end of the floor he ran the show as he distributed and scored efficiently all throughout the game. He finished with 9 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds.

Re: Colon

I'm not big on this kid. If the kid from Akron really comes over and we get Jermaine Jackson that's two sub 6' guards. His offer sheet includes some really, really low end d1 and some d2 schools. He may be a high energy guy but doesn't look like an A10 caliber guy.

From what I understand we haven't even offered him yet.

Re: Colon

I'm with you 102, I just don't see how you would carry 3 sub-5'11" guys on your roster at PG in the A-10. The kid from Akron is already said he is transferring in so there is one already and he is 5'9" I think.  Jackson is a bull though, with a lot of skill, which is why I would take him over Colon as well.

Re: Colon

There may be a time when our program is solid enough to be dismissive of recruits, I don't know that this is that time. I'll go ahead and put my trust in Coach D and his staff as far as evaluating talent in order to build a program.

Re: Colon

There are a lot of kids that get over looked or under rated.  I am really not concerned about "Stars".  It is the job of a good coach who will find kids that will fit into his system.  I like the fact that Jackson has several other D1 offers and would be a safe choice, but I have to tell you after watching several videos on both I am really warming to the thought that Colon may be a better fit.  He is scary quick, makes good decisions, and plays with a heart of a lion.  We will see what happens.  I agree, however, that Coach D will only pick one of the two.

PS:  I really hope that Coach D can get a commitment from Nick Washington this weekend before Georgetown gets back in the picture (thet just hired Patrick Ewing yesterday).

Re: Colon

I get your point 102 about the size issue, but I like the fact that Colon was "wreaking havoc" all over the floor, and creating turnovers.  After watching film of the team with Jackson and Balintyne playing no defense it was kind of a concern.  I thought we were going to be prioritizing defense in the future; so Colon seems a better fit in that regard.

Re: Colon

I recall Coach D saying that he liked winning players from winning teams, so we will see.

Re: Colon

Just to add to what Hilltopper pointed out above, this is what was said about Colon after the State Championship Game:

"Senior guard Josh Colon turned out to be the heart and soul for Blue Ridge as he made plays on both ends of the floor. In the first half, he put on a defensive clinic, forcing one turnover after another. On the offensive end of the floor he ran the team and found his teammates for easy buckets, also scoring when opportunities were presented. He finished with 17 points, 5 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds."

Does Coach D offer, or waits until Jackson visits?  Interesting weekend.  Have not heard if Ballantyne is visiting this weekend?

Re: Colon

I certainly defer to Coach D as to an eye for talent, I just think 3 very small guards is one too many.  I am fine with two of them.  CLK I am with you, I would love to lock up Nick Washington while we have the chance.  His size is critical and if GTown was recruiting him...............

Re: Colon

CLK, I'm with you.  I'm very impressed with Colon's quickness on both ends of the court.  He seemed to make all of the right plays and has a motor (I know it's a highlight tape, but a lengthy one at that).  And the level of Prep school basketball was a lot higher than what I saw played in the Jackson/Ballentyne high school game. I don't know if the roster can hold two 5-8 guards (Tavian Dunn-Martin and Colon) in the A10.  KD and the staff think highly of Colon to get him up here for an official visit.

Also, Colon is from Puerto Rico; I can't recall, but was Mickey Davila our last Puerto Rican player?  Nick Washington is also from Puerto Rico.

Re: Colon

The more videos I see of colon, the more I think he could be an absolute steal. Despite his height, he is a menace on defense, and seems to be a solid shooter and passer. Played against good competition in the prep school league in Virginia.  Coach D has a good history with Puerto Rican guards too.

Re: Colon

I have to believe that Coach D will do his best to get the best players.  If the best player happens to be 5'9"--so be it.  North Carolina's PG wasn't tall compared to almost every other player on the floor.

Many of you must have been euphoric when these very tall player committed to DU--Abele, Darius Lewis, Big Mike, Lewinson, etc.

I don't think anyone is looking for 7 foot point guards....
