Welcome to SHOO-SHOO, RAH-RAH! The Duquesne Dukes Basketball Fan Message Board!
One of America's Great Message Boards - Any Inappropriate Posts Will Be Deleted!
Offline Duquesne athletic director Greg Amodio has had plenty of people ask him why Duquesne is seldom mentioned as a potential candidate for the Catholic 7, and he said the answer is simple -- the school hasn't given larger conferences a reason to want it, until recently. Offline Hard to argue with you. That was a truely bizarre article. Says we're not earners when its your job to make us earners, Really weird. Offline Really? Are you serious? I had no problems with the article at all. It was blunt and honest. Our program under RE (who I didn't realize was as good as Mike Krzyzewski) wasn't quite able to make it to the next level where we would have been considered for admission into the conference. Ron did a great job, but he never got us the NCAA tournament, and never was able to get any team there prior to Duquesne either. Move on. I'm conflicted. GA spoke the truth. However, isn't he a part of the reason we are not earners? Offline Thank you Simms! I am with you 100% and tried to address in a similiar fashion in a response to a separate thread this afternoon. It is good to see some realistic posts in response to the negative, emotional outbursts that seem all to prevalent on this Board. As you said "Move On"!!! Offline You raise a fair argument, but all I think he is doing is explaining a rationale for a decision already made by the "7", we are not getting invited. I agree that GA has to trumpet our strengths and I have heard him say this to people, including media types, over the last couple of years - look at some of the press conferences and releases. However, if asked why wouldn't we get invited I think he needs to give an objective response - see Simms other post. I said in the past if GA wanted to play politics to appease a certain segment of the fan base, he would tell them what they want to hear as opposed to what the reality is at the moment. Don't forget in that same article he also states our commitment and continuing efforts to become a program that has "earned" its way into relevancy. Anyway, I appreciate a good point counter point and you do raise a logical argument, I just don't think there is any way around the reality of where we are at this given moment as it relates to the specific inquiry about the new conference. Perhaps GA is speaking as X's athletic director as to why DU didn't get in. You raise a fair argument, but all I think he is doing is explaining a rationale for a decision already made by the "7", we are not getting invited. Offline Thanks DKurt, fair enough. How many scholies do you think we end up with for next year? I said to a buddy within less than a year we'll have a pretty good idea of the caliber of player that JF is recruiting with the Spring signing period coming up and then the early signing period happening in November. Offline Really? Are you serious? I had no problems with the article at all. It was blunt and honest. Ron did a great job, but he never got us the NCAA tournament, and never was able to get any team there prior to Duquesne either. Move on. Mr. Simms, I never compared RE to Mike K, agree? Offline Thank you Simms! I am with you 100% and tried to address in a similiar fashion in a response to a separate thread this afternoon. It is good to see some realistic posts in response to the negative, emotional outbursts that seem all to prevalent on this Board. As you said "Move On"!!! Mr. Brightside, see my response to Simms and Steve, since you have decided to piggy back their post, and not address me directly. Duquesne NOT earners I think the issue becomes can GA "execute" the significant increase Dr. D has provided the mens basketball program. Looking back over his tenure can anyone argue that fan alumni media & student support hasnot continually declined. Credit GAs hire of RE Duquesne became relevant & competitive yet the decline has continued on his watch. In business anyone can throw money at a problem but one must execute the strategy. Offline Scotch, let me clarify some of your statements. Offline Simms there is no use trying change people who'd rather see the glass 1/2 empty. Scotch you and Iron Duke 81 have a har....on for GA no matter what he does or doesn't do and as simms said it is getting way old. Iron Duke 81 you are being totally irrational when you blame GA for the Conference issue and then say he had resources so it's his fault. Yeah, we were at the bottom of the budget ranking in the A-10 when he came in and went to the middle during RE's time and interesting enough were generally in the middle of the pack in the standings as a result. Like I said before continued increasing of resources, comitment and most of all winning will be our best shot at getting a "consistent" upper level program. Scotch I didn't address you directly as it was just simpler to tag along with others (Levon 1975, Steve 1981 and Simms) whom I agree with - and I've refuted your criticisms and Iron Dukes directly in the past. Again, part of me wishes GA took the easy road and kept Ron and I wonder what you guys would be Complaining about then. Offline Scotch, let me clarify some of your statements. Not equal in time frame to get into any post season play, not equal in years of experience as a head coach, Not equal at D1 wins and losses, He does have an outstanding record at the lower level schools, and they split on conference titles. He wins for post season 2 NCAA's Vs 3 NIT's and 2 CBI's or maybe a push. I never looked at Ferry's lower league stats until now, so I'll concede to they are close to being equal. People can blather on and on and on about all of the so called positives. Our last chance at an NCAA tournament just went out the window. I'm not sure of this but I don't think if you took all the records of all the athletic directors in the BCS conferences and add the mid major bb conferences you can find someone to match that record. No tournament appearances. Any sport. Seven years. Last edited by duqkurt (3/09/2013 5:47 pm) Offline Listen, I don't think that GA should be off the hook at all. If Ferry continues to suck, then they both should be fired. I haven't been impressed with Ferry this season besides his recruiting efforts. I just think it's too early to think he is a loser and that we can't get better. Only time will tell. And for the record, I wish Ron was here this year. I loved him. I just get tired of the rants about the AD and how he is awful. Thank you Simms for your honesty I was at times very puzzled by your previous comments in regard to Ron especially with your history. GA just bought an extension at the expense of Ron. Lets look at GAs tenure as AD makes you wonder. Under Dr. Ds tenure well done he just listened to some bad advice from his AD. This program could win the new 2 bid A-10 by 2015 but things will remain 10 students per game 1500 fans further decline in season ticket holders why? There is an elephant in the room @ it is fast becoming a huge liability towards the University my friend. Offline Like I said, GA is on the hook with the Ferry hire, for better or worse, which is as it should be. What if he kept Ron Iron Duke 81, then what? Would you still blame GA and just give Dr. D all the credit? Would you then complain that GA was indecisive? Clearly this year would not have been much better with RE at the helm, not about his coaching, just the quality of players, his recruits included! Maybe they pull out 4 more wins, so what. And to argue that Dr. D doesn't rely on input from GA, please give me a break. I don't care one way or the other about GA, but I refuse to buy the "everything is his fault" mentallity that you can't seem to let go of. As Simms said in a prior post, move on for crum sakes!!! Offline There have been some hypotheticals posted in this thread about the what the results would have been if RE would not have been fired. Who knows? But one thing is certain - if GA had not fired him and given him another year to try to save his job, GA could have saved himself, the school and the program a lot of grief. If the team had a losing record and his recruits showed little promise for the future, I believe even Ron's strongest supporters would have accepted his release. GA's decision would have been more respected, there would have been less loss of support and less season ticket cancellations. And there would be less debate about the firing here. Last edited by Westender (3/10/2013 3:04 pm) One additional thing for the apologists to ponder, how is GA overall hiring record on coachs? No sorry I give Charlie a sh@t load of credit. He walked into a hornets nest @ brought the University to a top flight undergraduate school. Do you reallythink more then 70% of the faithful supported the firing of RE especially the handling via the memo. RE did more the the mens program never alienated people alumni media fans. GA is a huge liability. Do you think Charlie is going to put up with this garbage next year @ support our beloved AD. If he continues 700 fans per game 12 students sorry more fan support for a highschool game your right its Charlies fault @ most of all that very bad person Ron Everhart! Move on GA should get a 10 year extension hes doing a great job my bad. Offline Wow, what an articulate argument Iron Duke 81, can't come up with a counter to those well thought out positions - as if they haven't been rebutted enough already by several on this Board. It's just the same thing over and over again with you and yes I do believe the majority of the faithful saw where the program was going the last couple of years of RE's tenure and thought the decision was the right one, but hey it was all part of GA's diabolical plan to make RE look bad! PLEASEEEEE. Write what you want, you are entitled, but I will not go around and around on the same crap any longer. Westender, your perspective is logical, but frankly illustrates the easy road that GA elected not to take!!! Tough decisions aren't meant to appease the masses - whether they are right or wrong. You guys can whine all you want about GA this and GA that, I don't know or care about him enough, but I can tell you that I think he made the right and tough call concerning RE. CLK you can ban me if you want, but RE reported to GA who reported to Charlie and he gave the truthful assessment to Charlie of where we were in the memo, simple as that. All the speculation about trying to disgrace RE is just not credible in my view as it wasn't necessary to do so to achieve the end result. You can think I worship at the alter of GA so shoot me down and say I'm a GA apologist, but not so - frankly, I see legitimate points that are raised by DuqKurt that should be answered. Anyway, I'll be back on Board when the focus is on recruiting and basketball.

And you fired the reason you shekafr_ckasmuckafr_ckn idiot. Nice spin GA You had no plan and still don't today. Don't take credit for all the money that RE got and you take credit for. You are the reason that we can not go anywhere. Please, please, please Mr. Dambrot, I fired the winningest coach in 30 years and I hate that he got all the attention, so I fired him. OK Mr. Dambrot I know you told me no on our first date, but I'll give anything if you will be my coach.
Hey Mr. D. I have an idea, lets get a guy who is just above .500 and not equal to the guy we fired and give him a raise. We can tell people we are spending more, and that should work.
This article and statements from GA complete his sorry tenure here, by his own words, until recently, which if he was referring to this season would mean loosing 16 of the last 17 games. Way to think it out, you can't even spin this disaster off of yourself. RANT OFF!

Re: I can't take the BS anymore!
And let's not kid ourselves, Richmond has made the NCAA tourney recently and had a lot of success under Chris Mooney, yet they won't get an invite either. People on this board are freaking delusional. Our team sucked for 30 years and hasn't been relevant since before I was born. This past year had absolutely no bearing on us making the tournament. One NIT in five years does not get you into the Big East. Rather than Complaining about the Big East raiding us, and calling the new A10 the next MAAC (not true at all), we should consider how we could come out of this situation in a decent manner. I've discussed some of the teams we should add on other forums, but I'd rather not speculate.
Also, why the personal attacks on Ferry? I thought you said you would support the new coach? Sure, he hasn't proven himself, and I would argue that Ron would've won more games this year, but you troll everything he does. You even slammed Watkins and whether he will be good or not. Why I am feeding you, I have no idea, but regardless, you need to relax. If Ferry continues to be as bad as he has been this year, then by all means, continue to complain. I didn't expect much out of this year. I don't see people at Rhode Island complaining because Hurley didn't get them to the NIT whereas Baron consistently could.

Re: I can't take the BS anymore!
Isn't it up to other schools trying to get into the conference to point out our weaknesses? Shouldn't our AD be selling only our strengths? Be a salesman for DU!!
It is like a court case. If you are a lawyer for the defense, why argue the prosecutions side?

GA said we are not earners, and when he got here he said he was going to get our program to the Xavier level buy using that model, Fail.
Stating Ferry's coaching record is not a personal attact, its just stating that he was just above .500 when we hired him. How have I trolled everything Ferry does? Show me where I have attacked this man. Pointing out an obvious coaching decision of not going back to man to man when the zone failed is just an observation. I will and do support the coach, but he is open to discussion.
I have said in prior post that we would never be considered for the new conference, my post says nothing about us not getting an invite.
I have not made any post about the raiding of teams, or calling our conference the MAAC, please show me where I have.
I did not slam Watkins, I said how do we know how good he will be until he plays. That was a discussion, or as Steve feels and agrument we had, about not knowing how a kid will react to D1 level competition and the stress of college life. I never degrated the young man, said he sucked, can't shoot, jump, nothing. Get your facts straight.
I hope this opens your eyes, because you need to be a bit more clear on what I write, and what you think I write.
Don't appreciate the troll remark, from someone who has a reading comprehension problem.

Re: I can't take the BS anymore!
GA was being honest about us being earners. As I said in my post, even if we had made the NCAA tourney last year or during Jackson's year, we would not be earners. It takes sustained success. You are correct in the fact that he has not succeeded, but he is trying (alledgedly). I know you hate GA and that can't be denied, but usually an AD is given TWO coaching changes to make an impact. Our facilities have improved a lot (which you claim Ron got the money for, so I suppose that isn't something you acknowledge) which should help us become earners in the future.
Let's review how you stated Ferry's coaching record:
"Hey Mr. D. I have an idea, lets get a guy who is just above .500 and not equal to the guy we fired and give him a raise."
You claimed in your post that he is not equal to Everhart despite having no way of knowing such a thing. Everhart was 2 wins above 500 when we hired him (174-172). The difference is that Ferry has been to the NCAA tourney twice. We have seen one season of Ferry at Duquesne yet you claim he is not equal to Everhart. How can you make such a claim? A scientist would demand more data, as should everyone else. If you had written, "Let's replace him with someone who isn't going to do as well as Everhart did in the first season." then yes, I would've felt your statement was justified.
While you don't attack everything he does, I haven't found one truly positive post about the coach since he was hired. Mostly you talk about how he was a backup to Dambrot (as mentioned above). I would've suspected you to at least praise the WVU win (which everyone was excited about) but since you predicted we would lose (badly) due to Everhart's knowledge of the team, perhaps you steered clear of that thread. Can you provide me with a post where you speak to Ferry's strengths as a coach, or about how anything good could possibly come from his hiring? Even from earlier in the season when we still had some hope.
I didn't mentioned you when talking about the new league. I said the board was delusion. People on here (not all) have acted like GA or CD can call up the other C7 schools and get invited. Others complain about how much it will suck once the other schools leave the A10. Personally, I think it might be better for us if we can add a Davidson, GMU, and Siena. We could compete better and the league would still be good. Not 4 bid good, but hopefully 2 every year, with 3 bids possible.
Your post about Watkins was rooted in a negative conotation from the start. Everyone knows that every recruit is a question mark and nothing is a guarantee. Yet you had nothing good to say about either recruit (Watkins and Robinson). We are obviously rebuilding, so one area where the fans can be excited about is recruiting. Yet, for some reason, you don't want to get excited about our two (alledgedly) good recruits so far. Why not?
The bottom line is that you have a personal agenda on this board to slam the Administration. I get that you want Amodio gone. I don't have a reading comprehension problem, but I do find that reading the same opinions over and over again gets rather tedius.

I do not slam the administration, no one can prove that anything I have disclosed to this board to be not true. The truth hurts sometimes, and as I told Steve. My only reason to come on to this board was to open the eyes of the faithful of how poorly this place is run. The handling of the firing, lack of student attendence, lack of marketing campaign, lack of game day environment, it is what it is. I do not speek of evaluation of players or team, not my pedigree. No negative conotation on recruits, that discussion was me trying to give reason as to why some players where asked to transfer, they looked good on paper but did not work out once the got to D1.
I have always said RE should not have hired high school coaches as assistants, that's who is the core to recruiting.
My rant was purely about what the way I saw the article was GA and CD standing together and saying we have failed to be earners, and the best thing we had in years we let go, he did what we asked him, and we did not capitolize on it. Yea give them credit for being honest, but does that not get your goat that they are willing to say we have failed to move upward with the recent success the coach brought us.
As far as not commenting on the WVU win, I don't comment on any win or loss until yesterday, so I chose a loss. Your right I did predict a big loss, thought RE would have the key to the safe, turns out Huggins did not, as far as RE, his game plan was not used IMO he's not the head coach.

Re: I can't take the BS anymore!
I am thrilled to know that the true measure of success for this program is that a blogger was interviewed on triblive, internet sports talk show. Boy, that really is a huge positive.
GA has been in charge for 19% of the 37 year string. Congratulations Mr. Amodio and all you "positive" glass half full people. Your boy has a stellar record. You should all be very proud.

I think he should be on a quicker hook than seeing whether or not Ferry is a success.

Re: I can't take the BS anymore!
With the exception of SMS, not so hot.
Men's basketball - he thought his own hire wasn't doing the job so he fired him.
Football - I believe he hired the football coach Jerry Schimdt. Underperformed this year, heat is on the football coach this year.
Men's soccer- After Wade Jean resigned, GA hired Ouiment who was fired or asked to resign this year. Amodio hired the new guy starting this year.
Women's soccer - On the third coach I believe, all that he has hired. Hired the original coach, the guy from Penn State and the current coach. Pathetic team.
Women's lax - His hire. Program has come nowhere close to beating a ranked team or beating the top A10 teams.
Women's volleyball - Opperman apparently has pictures of board members doing something. Career A10 record 50 games under .500. Doesn't come close to winning a set off a ranked team or an upper ranked A-10 program.
So his overall hiring record is not so hot. Isn't one of jobs of the AD is to hire coachs? Lasalle, Bonas, Fordham, everyone has won something.
Why isn't his overall hiring record considered in whether to retain him?
