Offline This has been a bitterly hard season. I honestly thought we would win more than one League game especially after beating WVU. I did not expect the total collapse of this team, where in so many games were were blown out. I also have to say, that I was expecting more from this highly touted next level coaching staff. Triple the salary, more money for the assistants to afford not have to hire high school coaches, and yet I did not see anything special in their game day coaching, or any significant improvement in this team as the season progressed. Some of the apologist will come out and say I am being unfair. Maybe so, but you know what, this is my opinion and I do not care if you agree. I have said this several times, it is my opinion that for Ferry to be successful at DU he will need to recruit exceptionally well in a League that recruits very well. He is not going to out coach many if any other coaches in this League, even without Butler and Xavier, or coach up average talent (agian my opinion feel, free to disagree). Last edited by CLK (3/10/2013 12:16 pm) I share pretty much the same thoughts as you do. It was a tremendously disheartening season. As as a result IMO of self-inflicted wounds on the men's side. I simply have no faith in Duquesne's leaders. None. Last edited by duqkurt (3/10/2013 12:28 pm) Offline I also was disappointed in only eight wins and the sr season of Sean, who seemed to regress, Jerry Jones and Kadeem. It seemed they would revert to RE's go for steal and fast break and miss and leave their man open for a layup or a three. I think Dre Marhold played as well as his skills were but always seemed undersized. But remember RE had BJ playing center many times last year, but he could score and really drive baseline. Lets hope new recruits will do well and the sophomores to be will continue to improve, plus Soko . Offline BTW, hopefully we have seen the last of "Ferry small ball" with Kadeem at Center. I honestly did not understand why more playing time was not given to Datt and D-Mart to build for the future. It leads me to conlude that with three new bigs for next year, D-Mart & Datt have no or very limited future with this team. If that is the case, it would be best for all if they transfer. If they both leave there will be three scholarships still available for this spring. If that happens here would be my RX for this team: Last edited by CLK (3/10/2013 12:14 pm) Offline I pretty much agree with everything you said CLK. In a lot of these blowout losses I asked myself, would this have happened if Ron was coaching? He very rarely lost a game by a total blowout. We always complained about his teams collapsing (a very honest complaint) but Ferry's team collapsed a lot more. Now, I've said that this season is a wash and I stand by that. Next year I expect 15 wins or so. The year after I expect 20. Offline CLK I do agree 1000% with your assessment for next year and the current roster, but I would disagree somewhat with you and Simms as to all the "blowouts". In large part the kids played hard, they just didn't have the talent level to win more or finish, but they were in the vast majority of games. So far I like Ferry's preparation and despite your assessment of Ferry I believe it is way too early to judge him. From what I have heard from people that attended his practices, there was much more of a sense of organization, teaching and structure than what we had in the past. Anyway it doesn't really matter unless they progress as Simms suggested with double the wins next year and then 20 + the year after. If that doesn't happen my patience will have reached it's end. Everhart wasn't even there. He coached from his hospital bed. Offline Don't forget that BC was shorthanded too. Jared Dudley (foot injury) didn't play for BC, nor did Oates. A huge loss for Boston College not having Jared Dudley... Offline Point of clarification, as far as I know Ron was given leeway on who to hire as an assistant and finacial constraints were not the reasons he picked high school coaches. I know he was well supported other areas like his recruiting budget. Offline That win at Boston College was indeed glorious! Everhart wasn't even there. He coached from his hospital bed. Of course he could hire who he wanted as long as he stayed in budget, which was a heck of a lot less than the current budget. Most were negative about the future, and a vocal minority was calling for Ron's head. One poster who now claims to be an RE supporter, was very negative towards him in this thread ( Last edited by duq81 (3/10/2013 11:15 pm) Offline Actually duq81, I was going to post a similar post. Things don't change much from year to year with Duquesne University basketball. If you also look after the NCAA's began we will see: It's not just restricted to Duquesne FAM. When I lurk over on the Pitt football boards, it's pretty the exact same posts as I read here. There is a group of posters who hate Steve Pederson's guts. Posters who are still angry that Wanny, who was similar to RE in being a very nice guy, who the alums liked, was fired, and that the firing was done in a sloppy fashion. I would guess you could visit the boards of other teams, and see the same thing. I don't have a problem with anyone who thinks that GA needs to go. I just get sick of being beatean over the head with it. They constantly bring up RE, then get angry when someone decides to debate RE's merits. It reminds me a poster in Colleary's last days, who turned every single thread into a diatribe against BC. BC had almost no support by then, but this guy wouldn't even let us talk about the games or anything else. If you complained about it, you were a lackey for BC. We ended up having to ban him. Offline Here's my expectations. Next year we have another 8-win season and are asked to leave the conference because we have stunk forever. We try to get into the NEC but they turn us down. So the decision is made to drop to Division II and end up in the PSAC. Offline Ron is gone. Time to move on.
Relections & Expectations
Next year if these guys are really an upgrade, I would expect that we should move up and finish closer to the middle of the pack than the bottom of the pack, with noticable improvement in the team from the beginning of the year to the end of the season. If we finish in the bottom of the League again next year Amoldio should be fired, period, as it will never happen.
Re: Relections & Expectations
I checked out of listening to the men's team after the RMU loss. I didn't watch or listen to any A10 games. Those beat downs and melt downs, I was happy to live without experiencing that first hand.
I went all in on the women's team.
It is what it is. Yet another bitter pill to swallow.

Re: Relections & Expectations
1) It is very important that Ferry land either Severe or Notice. It looks like Severe has gone postal with numerous BCS teams after him including Pitt. I think he is a very long shot at this point. More likely is Duane Notice. He is visiting SBU this weekend, and will visit DU next weekend. This is one we have to win.
2) We need another PG with a great handle who can run an uptempo offense. We are recruiting a couple JUCO points in this regard.
3) If both D-Mart and Datt transfer I would go for the best JUCO PF/C that I could recruit. This would take some pressure off of Watkins & Robinson as freshman.
My starting group would be:
Colter, Notice ( if we can get him), Winters, Soko, New JUCC center
Next five:
New JUCO PG, Indy Jones, Kadeem, Watkins & Robinson.
This would allow us to go 10 deep with 9 of them being Ferry's guys. This would reshuffle as the freshman gain experience. I am sure others could find other combos, but that would be mine •Thread Starter

Let's remember that Ron somehow got 10 wins out of the shooting-decimated team of his first year. How about that glorious win at Boston College when he was dressing 9 guys?
Haven't seen anything like that in Ferry's first year.

I remember that now. People were making the comparisons between Ron and James Gammon's character in Major League 2 :-)

Re: Relections & Expectations
I'm not sure Martin will go anywhere given that he burned his red shirt year inelligible. Datt could go and I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Seattle. I think if we recruit a JUCO guard that they would start with Jeremiah and whatever freshman guard we land splitting minutes from the bench.
I suspect Watkins will start from day one, but I could also see Winters splitting time between 3 and 4 for one more season.

As for Martin he could go D2 have two years of eligibilty and play right away, just as Lewinson did. As for the rest it is your opinion. Not saying you are wrong it all depends on who Ferry recruits.

This old article, which was written right before Ron was let go, really lays it out there, pointing out Ron's strong points, as well as his warts.

-Complaints about the AD
-Complaints about the team
-Questions on who would transfer
-Questions on who we could recruit
Difference last year was the selfish player who went to Arizona and then the big news of RE getting fired....if you go back 10 years albeit when RE was hired and a year after that, things really haven't changed that much as far as our reflections - all based on DU bball being terrible. Just sayin/
