Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

From the same author at PSN that wrote the long article on Dr Carr we get a look at Coach Dambrot's ties to Puerto Rican players and the model being developed at the grassroots level to place kids in US prep schools and get recruited.

The tie is to Todd Washington who is Nick's father so there are some more details in there for those who were trying to find what little of info there seemed to be on him in his recruitment.

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

Quite an endorsement !!!

A coach can never have too many open recruiting pipelines.

Looking forward to seeing how it benefits coach D.

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

This is a great article about the relationship Coach D has developed with Mr. Washington, and should make all DU fans excited about the future.  Mr. Washington sounds like a really nice man who cares about kids in Puerto Rico and invests his time and own resources in developing them and making their live better.  God bless him.

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

KD and his staff have great connections in Texas and recruit there heavily.  Expect to see kids coming from there. At Akron, he had some kids from PR but with limited success. Off court issues prevented them to graduate or reach their potential.  The connections are there for sure....but they will focus more on Texas.

KD and his staff are good guys and will do a lot for the kids.  There will be problems for sure....kids are 18+ years old...but KD and his staff run a tight ship with a zero tolerance policy.  Kids will pay for their mistakes and learn from them.

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

I remember a pretty good guard from Puerto RIco in Reuben Montanez,6-2 200 lbs that played at Bishop
Boyle High school in Homestead. He was outstanding, probably should have received serious consideration
on the 100th year team in Duquesne history. Physical, great shooter.
I think the people of Puerto Rico have  alot of positive feelings to Pittsburgh as their most favorite son ,Roberto Clemente played for the Pirates from 1955 to 1972.It could help Duquesne recruiting there.
Dambrot is working it,I love  his efforts in forming relationships with players, coaches and individuals trying
to make a positive difference in young mens lives. He said his  job was  about people and forming relationships at his press conference. Another good vibe you get about Duquesne basketball.

Mickey DaVilla or Davilla. Not close to Montanez talent wise but a nice guard nonetheless.

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

As I recall, Mickey played more since his teams were much less talented than the ones Ruben played on.

There was not much playing time with Jarrett Durham and Moe Barr at the two, but Ruben really rose as a Senior starter on that  Big Train lead 71-72 20-5 team. I still recall a game that he was 10-10 , 20 points with all from 20 feet or better, we were going nuts down at the Arena.

I wish that I had your memory, Phil. My wife's birthday is some day in May and our anniversary is some day in June....

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

Hey Ken, maybe it was burned into my mind because we used to almost win all the games at the Arena, I do admit to purposely forgetting many games at AJ Palumbo, lol.......

Re: Duquesne, Coach Dambrot and the Carribean

My wife wants to know how I can remember something about DU basketball from 50 years ago, like a Willie Somerset bucket, but can't remember something she asked me to do an hour ago!!

My wife calls it "selective memory."  Matches my "selective hearing!"
