Look at the frontcourt size next year! With two scholarships left and two+ deep at every position (including a lot of flexibility), Coach Dambrot will be able to offer to the best players possible without needing to "fill a need."

And he did this in two months, no less.

Yep, I think most of us are actually in this camp, although with Lewis (and a better Smith) I think we'll have a puncher's chance in most games. That's why I used the phrase "take care of the non-con." The more I look at next year's roster, the more excited I get. The coach has a great motor; if it rubs off we'll have a much more fun team to watch than we've had in a long while.

Re: Final roster

Just looking forward to seeing a well coached team on the floor. The wins will take care of themselves. Always fun to speculate though. Will be surprised if this team doesn't win more than last year. That's  as far as I'll go!

Re: Final roster

Under Ron and Ferry, I always felt like the rosters were incomplete. Even on some of Ron's good teams, like the tj, Saunders, and Clark team, the roster was missing big men which caused Damian to have to play out of position. Looking at the 2018-2019, that is the most complete roster at every position that I can remember in my ten years following Duquesne basketball. There's size and depth at every position.

Re: Final roster

Damian was in the 4 spot, and since he couldn't shoot, he was able to capitalize on rebound put backs and other loose balls that turned into points.

It would have helped to have a true 5 then, but I always thought he was in the only position to have success, and he was a remarkable talent. Quick and a defense expert that could steal at a moments notice.

If he had the ability to shoot and make free throws he may have made the NBA home.

I cant say I remember a team with this much height since guys like Alston and Lopes were on campus.  With Verhoeven's handle, they could run 5 guys 6'8'' or above if needed.  Cool!

Re: Final roster

Mike Rice, for some reason, used to run the biggest lineup he could against Penn State, which had a bunch of lumbering big men, but it never seemed to work.

I remember him trying that. We were something like 10-1 going up to play them, and he tried this nonsense with Arnold playing the 2. Of course we lost. I remember the players just shaking their heads, and sarcastically calling him "the mastermind".

This one looks good on paper, if they can play and gel 18-19 could be a lot of fun maybe , lead by Big Duke Dylan!

Re: Final roster

Phil, the neat thing about next year's roster: 2 seniors, 2 juniors (one of whom will be in his fourth year of college), and 3 sophomores who will be in their third year of college. All of the transfers will have had a year to practice with the team. The program is a year ahead of schedule at this point, and I wouldn't be surprised to see an 18-10,19-11 team then.

Re: Final roster

They will win 20 games in 2018/2019....count on it.  Not sure that will be enough to win the A10 or get a at-large bid though.

20 games won't come close to an at large bid, it would be borderline for the NIT. 24 wins is what it takes to reach the NCAAs, unless you play a strong ooc schedule.

I would be delighted if year 2 was a 20+ win season, even if we go to the NIT. I have NEVER got to see a twenty win season for the Dukes and have been living and dying by this program in the fall for the past 7 years (I know that's nothing compared to what most of you have experienced). To reach that mark in Dambrots year two would have me convinced NCAA appearances (multiple) will be on the horizon during his tenure.

Not that I don't like this incoming class, but I think the transfers and Swingle commitment, which is really Dambrots first class to recruit here, is the beginning of what will be us getting the next tier of recruiting talent. Dambrots name and reputation carries some serious weight, and I think we will see the level of player being brought in being raised dramatically compared to what we are used to. He is an incredible coach and his relationship with Lebron gives him a track record with recruits that could stack up with any other coach in college basketball, any coach.

If he can quickly build this into a consistent winner and grab a couple bids we could see this program really take off.

Re: Final roster

I don't wish to apply pressure to a coaching staff by suggesting x number of wins for any given year. While it's fun to speculate, I think that it does an injustice of sorts to the staff, especially if the win total does not occur as predicted. I recall some pretty optimistic predictions for this past season on this board. Didn't quite work out, huh! I really don't care how many games the team wins this coming season. As for future years, things look like they are certainly on the upswing. Truly an exciting time to be a Dukes fan. For now, that's enough for me.

While I have an NCAA Tournament team to look back on, it wasn't one of the great DU teams. Just had a great player in Nixon. I think younger fans like you, in the long run, will have more good years than bad ones.

I'm so old that I can remember the 71 team, which was a great team. The Nelsons, Jarrett, Mickey Davis. 21-5. Ranked in the Top 20.

Re: Final roster

Long time fan first time poster/looking forward talking wit y'all. I saw the roster post and re'membered John Walker left with Ferry. Saw some article this morning that the new coach has not really recruited the kid, https://collegecourtreport.com/2017/05/17/john-walker-iii-weighing-options-going-into-signing-deadline/amp/

I guess he is off to Az St now right? Didn't sound like he was going to sign today which doesn't make sense. That mean he gonna reclassify?

Keep your eye on this for next year. He isn't going to sign with anyone today.

Re: Final roster

Wow, in what I think is an extremely sad development, it looks like John Walker III is giving up basketball. I won't say how I came across this information because I am repeatedly lambasted for it, but it appears that this will be his decision. Things like "politics" in the college game and just not feeling it anymore we're cited, and this is really just a shame. The kid had a lot of talent and I know for a fact how excited he was to come and play here. After the coaching change, I guess he never heard another word from the university. While that is the harsh reality of college sports, I still really feel for the kid. He had open offers from a pac12 and aac schools and at this point feels like he would rather do something else.

It sucks to see a kid give up a free college education, and I wish him well in whatever future endeavors he pursues.

Re: Final roster

Did he open up his recruiting before or after we hired our coach.

Woah that is odd for him to do that! I credit you and your source sir. No question here. Like you said that is a shame. I was very happy when he signed originally. Wow! At least get the free education like you said.

Rothstein reported on Twitter on March 25. We hired Dambront on the 27th. Right? I may have the hiring confused dates.
